May-06-14
 | | chessgames.com: <Phony> Oops! Thanks, what would we do without you? <Blunderdome> Good point, it really wasn't a marketing scheme, we just wanted the majority of users to have the best possible experience. We could change what is being linked to, but perhaps the solution lies in taking some of these less used features like the Endgame Explorer and making them limited-access for free members. |

 | | WannaBe: I hardly never use Endgame Explorer, can't find the K vs K drop-down. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Abracadabra!> (an Aramaic phrase meaning "I create as I speak.") The Endgame Explorer is no longer strictly premium-only. Non premium members can search for pawns, knights, bishops, and of course kings. So that leaves a ton of very important endings available to everybody now: The elementary two-bishop mate: Endgame Explorer: BB vs K The subtle bishop-knight mate: Endgame Explorer: BN vs K King and pawn vs a lone king: Endgame Explorer: P vs K Bishop and a pawn vs a knight: Endgame Explorer: BP vs N Knight and a pawn vs a bishop: Endgame Explorer: NP vs B My personal favorite, two Knights vs a pawn: Endgame Explorer: NN vs P And countless others, use your imagination. Pawn endings galore. Pawns vs pieces. Enjoy! |

| May-06-14 | | Blunderdome: Wow, that was fast. People at the club are going to be confused when I win NN vs. P but can't draw an even-strength rook ending. |

 | | chessgames.com: A master of knights, but needs work on rooks? Sounds like you need a premium membership! I said it wasn't a marketing scheme, but NOW it's a marketing scheme ;-) |

 | | chessgames.com: We just upgraded to pgn4web version 2.82. Let us know if there are any problems. |

 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: <cg> I can't disable the menu on pages with URLs that end in .html, including the CG homepage. I can't even work around it by using an empty custom menu as empty menus automatically revert to the default menu (and in any case, some pages show the default menu even if I use a custom menu). It's no big deal, but seeing the menu on some pages and not others feels a bit weird. |

Update to pgn4web 2.82
It comes up too large on my iPad one. I used to be able to see the board and the moves. Now the board fills the screen. That means I can't go through the moves without constant scrolling up and down. I am a few versions back on the OS, only up to 5.1.1, which is as good as it gets unless I get a new iPad. |
|
| May-06-14 | | hms123: I can look at the games vertically, however. |
|
| May-06-14 | | davide2013: Before I was clicking on D7 to see the games from the Black side, what should I use now? |
|
| May-06-14 | | davide2013: I found that clicking on "F" I can switch the side of the board, however, up to yesterday, I would click on D7, and it did the same. |
|
| May-06-14 | | Robin01: Can we get a forum for kibitzing on the US Champsionship? Thanks. |

May-06-14
 | | chessgames.com: I can't imagine why, but the square to flip the board has now changed to e7. Also, b8 gives a FEN for the current board position--that's pretty handy. |

| May-06-14 | | gauer: pgn4web 2.82 seems to still display normally on the iphone 4s, iOS 7.1.1 - and I use it more often in landscape mode than portrait. But clicking the game's "move back" or "move forward" or "move end" or "auto-play" seems to cover a bit of the real-estate space of the display when a thumb tries to click it once. Also, after a double-click of hitting a button (or missing, and hitting a text move below it), the default "gesture" command seems to be to maximum magnify. Is there a work-around for it, like perhaps displaying the game buttons at the side in landscape mode, when replaying? |
|
May-06-14
 | | chessgames.com: <hms123> About the size of 2.82, on my iPad and Android tablet it seems to be the same. It just barely squeezes into the screen in landscape, but fits wonderfully in portrait. <gauer> <"move back" or "move forward" or "move end" or "auto-play" seems to cover a bit of the real-estate space of the display> I haven't noticed that, perhaps that's what hms123 was referring to. <Also, after a double-click of hitting a button (or missing, and hitting a text move below it), the default "gesture" command seems to be to maximum magnify.> Yes, that an iOS feature. Normally it takes two taps to engage that feature but that's easy to do. <Is there a work-around for it, like perhaps displaying the game buttons at the side in landscape mode, when replaying?> That's a sophisticated idea but perhaps a very good one. |
|
May-06-14
 | | WannaBe: <gauer> That would require cg.com to built an app for mobile devices, the current layout is just web page. Hence the button don't 'move'. Double-tapping (zoom) is mobile feature. How to disable: http://ipad.about.com/od/iPad_Troub... |
|
| May-06-14 | | gauer: Other viewers (like viewer deluxe ii, to play sidelines, etc) show a move list at a side, instead of below. Is there much care when a user is signed onto 2 or more browsers on different devices (default is always the nice pgn4web for some phones, but I sometimes set it to another by default on things like a windows desktop) with different viewer uses?! Not sure how one might try a set-up (in landscape) of move text on one side, and buttons on the other side of the chessboard. If it's any consolation, I'm a leftie, and hold the power button usually pointing at the 3-o'clock instead of 9-o'clock position, and more often navigate through the clickable move text than the buttons on pgn4web (can a person also set the replay rate on the autoplay button)? |
|
May-06-14
 | | chessgames.com: pgn4web is endlessly configurable, I'm sure Paolo would even be kind enough to help if I asked. I've seen it deployed with buttons in all different styles and locations. The tricky part is the "detection of landscape/portrait" mode, which really boils down to detecting the size of the window that it's being displayed in. Not impossible, doesn't require an app, but would require some finesse. In any case, first we have to deal with the fallout from the upgrade to the new version before we decide to get under the hood and start tinkering with it. |

| May-06-14 | | Thanh Phan: A "Power User" somehow I had a vision of <1.21 gigawatt Back to the Future moment>, <Until yesterday, the Chessgames Preferences Page had an option called "enhanced menu at the top of the screen". Most of the CG power-users knew about this and activated it, and premium members can even customize it to link to whatever strikes their fancy (even other sites).> Very nice, now more than the 5% of people who change preferences will notice and have access to the menu at the top of the page. |
