 | | Check It Out: Great news, can't wait. Thanks for the Karpov forum! |

| May-14-14 | | davide2013: Could you add this game to Guess the Move?
Fischer vs J Sherwin, 1958
It is an interesting endgame (it should be a draw, but Fischer would squeeze a win out of everything!), also analyzed by Dvoretsky in his book. |

It seems that there is a demand for more games of Borislav Ivanov. I came across this page http://ratings.fide.com/view_games....
where his games can be downloaded, covering events from August 2008 to September 2013. |
|
| May-15-14 | | davide2013: @Karpova, I'm not familiar with chessgames.com rules, but if they put Ivanov's games into the collection, then they should also put all other computer/engine games too right?
As example, why those of Ivanov and not those of Stockfish? I think I downloaded a collection of 42000 games played between computers. (I'm not against, more games, better chances to see how some opening lines are treated by engines) |

 | | Check It Out: <davide2013> I don't recall the exact wording, but chessgames.com recently said that their rule of thumb with regards to entering computer games in to the database is that they be significant in some way. For example, the world computer championships or the Deep Blue match with Kasparov. |

I saw that some people demanded more games of Borislav Ivanov and, as I knew about that website, I posted the link here to inform <chessgames.com> in case they didn't have prior knowledge of it. Nothing more. It's up to them to decide which games to include, if any at all. My message contained no recommendation as to what should be done. |

 | | chessgames.com: <they put Ivanov's games into the collection, then they should also put all other computer/engine games too right> We don't like to put computer-vs-computer games in the database unless they are very high profile, like the World Computer Championship. The reason should be obvious: we could let computers run and produce billions of computer fights if we wanted to, with dubious value. Borislav Ivanov's games however are not "computer-vs-computer." They are either real chess games or--if the allegations are true--computer vs human games. Either way, it's acceptable. Given the interest in Mr. Ivanov I believe they should be incorporated. <Something went wrong with the 's in the Quote of the Day.> Just noticed that, thanks. |

 | | offramp: I have a suggestion. On wikipedia they always give someone's age, either current or at death. Is it possible for that to be done in players' biographies? |
|
May-16-14
 | | chessgames.com: That's a good idea, offramp.
The computation of years between dates is pretty darn easy. The only wrinkle comes when we have to compare to dates like 1938.??.??. I guess in such a case we can pretend it's July 2nd (the midpoint of the calendar year.) |
|
May-16-14
 | | Phony Benoni: How would you treat obviously deceased players without death dates, such as today's Player of the Day, Emile D'Andre? It appears that Wikipedia omits the information in that case, an example being Ambrose Bierce: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambros... |
|
May-17-14
 | | chessgames.com: Oh, that's a good point that I hadn't considered. Perhaps anybody designated as alive and over a certain age should have that information omitted? Of course, if we can gather more data on these people the problem will go away on its own. |

| May-18-14 | | john barleycorn: this page looks strange - 2 players a result and no game http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches... |
|
| May-18-14 | | zanzibar: OK, I finally found the right forum.
Doing a <CG> "Advanced Search" on <Ronen Har-Zvi> yields: <Sorry, we have no names that exactly match 'RONEN HARZVI' in our database.> http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches... Not quite the result I expected. |

 | | Domdaniel: <Annie> Drat, you beat me to that. I sometimes forget just how *fast* you are... |
|
May-18-14
 | | Annie K.: Heh. Sorry, too fast sometimes - but it also missed the point. The search <Zanzibar> linked to also returned results, for the two players named Har-Zvi in the database, but it's the answering text he was pointing out. |
|
| May-18-14 | | zanzibar: <Annie K.> Yes, I found him too. But the post's purpose was to point out a flaw in the search result, I think. Here's another one, involving the dreaded "i" <-> "y" swap: <Ilia Smirin>
http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches... <Sorry, we have no names that exactly match 'ILIA SMIRIN' in our database.> This time, the suggestions from the search are way off, looking at <ilia> instead of <smirin>. In this case, Wiki goes with <Ilya> whereas both FIDE and SCID go with <Ilia>. |
|
May-18-14
 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: Hyphens can be managed if you know what you're doing; a search for "Har" or "Zvi" (or both) will give him as a result. Apostrophes are a major headache, though. <zanzibar> In general, you don't need to type full names into the Advanced Search; in fact, until quite recently doing so would have just made things worse, and in cases like this it can still do so. Just search for "Smirin" and you won't have to worry about how his first name is spelled :) |
|
May-18-14
 | | Domdaniel: <Switch> - <Apostrophes are a major headache, though.>
Indeed they are. Anyone called O'Irishname seems to get lost in the system. |
|
May-18-14
 | | Annie K.: But Smirin works. ;)
You're right though, that it would be nice to have the problem fixed - for both hyphenated names and names with apostrophes, that also can't be searched for. |
|
May-18-14
 | | Annie K.: Heh - cross posts all over! :)
And I'm on the iPhone, no fair. ;p |

 | | Domdaniel: <Annie> - <And I'm on the iPhone, no fair>
Lucky they didn't call it the <i'phone> or you'd vanish into the ether too... |
|
| May-18-14 | | zanzibar: <Switch> OK, leaving out first names is reasonable, but the search engine (perl?) could do this too, since I'm inputting SCID-style names: < <Collation Name>, <Prenom> > Unhyphening a name is a little more than I would expect, after all it is the player's name. This phase isn't so critical, since I'm doing it by hand. (But I'm using an emacs macro to process it, so I automatically get the full name cut and pasted over. I can whittle it down after the fact or modify the macro now that I know). The two-player search problem I mentioned the other day in Bio Bistro is more serious for my automated tournament search software. I'll return to that in a later post. Thanks all. |
