 | | chessgames.com: Dom, that is a genuine bug and one that I've known about for some time. The search was stripping out a number of irrelevant characters, like slashes and the plus symbol, as it should. But it was also stripping out the apostrophe, so you were forced to search on either <O HARE> or <HARE> but not <O'HARE> which the player was actually indexed under. So it was truly impossible to find people with apostrophes in their names, unless they happened to be in the pulldown or the Player Directory. I just tried a remedy, cautiously making a backup of the search script in case I invoke some unintended consequences. I simply prevented the removal of apostrophes so that if you use them, they become part of your search. It seems to work beautifully. Check it out:

 | | Annie K.: <cg> Congrats, that's one of the worst bugs finally solved! =) Could you please try to get rid of the stop words list for player searches next? ;) |
|
May-21-14
 | | Annie K.: Oh, and it would also be great if you could implement the apostrophe solution for the regular (kibitzing) search too, that also has the same problem. Pleasepleaseplease? :) |

 | | Domdaniel: <CG> Well done, thanks. As a bonus, a search for <O'Hare> now produces two players of that name. I have also played Eugene O'Hare, but hadn't known there were any of his games in the database. |

 | | chessgames.com: OK, you can now enter PIDs into the player fields on the advanced search. I also cleaned up some other bad code (eliminating bad practices) — hopefully I didn't break anything in the process. Example: Pal Benko is pid #14726, Tal is pid #14380
A search for Benko-Tal using only the pids: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches... We've had another feature in "beta" for over a year now: a field for the advanced search that includes endgame types. So you can look up Reti pawn endings or Karpov rook endings. It makes the Endgame Explorer that much more useful. The only thing holding us back were those "bad practices" mentioned above. Once we're confident that the current advanced search isn't broken in some subtle way, we'll work on rolling that feature out next. |

 | | Stonehenge: Methinks ECO code doesn't work anymore? |
|
May-22-14
 | | chessgames.com: Exactly the kind of thing I was looking for, thanks Stonehenge. It works now. |
|

 | | Stonehenge: Now it's only possible to see the first 25 games of a player. The software doesn't let me go to the next page. |

 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: Yeah, pages only work if there are arguments other than the player. It's possible to see page 2 of Garry Kasparov games played after the year 1600 or page 2 of Garry Kasparov games longer than one move, but on his player page you'll always get page 1. |

| May-22-14 | | Shams: An Uzbekistan nine-year old has claimed two GM scalps in a tournament in Tashent: https://chess24.com/en/read/news/9-... Can we get a player page for this young man? I couldn't find one but perhaps he's in under an alternate spelling of his name. |
|
| May-22-14 | | playground player: <Shams> Wow! that's really something. We had a tiny 8-year-old at our local chess club against whom I had to play very carefully indeed. His parents would gripe when I won. But the reason for me winning was always the same--some little thing would distract the child, he would lose concentration and make a mistake. I would tell the mother and father, "In two years, maybe less, he'll be beating everybody here easily. But he's just a little boy now, and he isn't able to maintain his focus on the game. You have to give that part of his mind time to develop." We had another kid who had a photographic memory. Show him a game once, and he would replay it, move-perfect. But he was 10, and wasn't all that interested in chess: wanted to be a physicist or something. |

 | | WannaBe: On the opposite end, at American Open by LAX, number of years ago, they had a K-6 tournament, or something like that, anyway, bunch of young kids running around was all I remembered. And this father (Asian, I am afraid to report) was just chewing his son's ears off, something like "How can you make that move?" etc... The poor kid had quivering lips like he is going to start bawling. I almost punch the dad in the mouth. |

| May-22-14 | | Shams: <WannaBe> <I almost punch the dad in the mouth.> Believe me, I know the feeling. One of my students when I taught in the Bay Area was erstwhile sensation Nicholas Nip, and you could tell the other Asian parents who wanted their kids to be like him. One day we had a fun outdoor picnic event where Nip played a simul event against ten other kids, and I and a few other teachers played some other kids. One poor young man, by no means dumb but lacking Nicholas' natural gifts, had to suffer through his mother (who knew f***-all about chess) looming like a vulture over our game and re-casting all my polite suggestions as bitchy demands. It was infuriating. I wish I could say I told her off, but I said nothing. One of the characters in Amy Tan's _The Joy Luck Club_ (disclaimer: I had to read it for class) is a child prodigy at chess, again with a non-chess playing mother. After one tournament her mother got mad at her after she won a game, because in the previous round she had also won but had allowed fewer of her pieces to be captured! A bit sad but also hilarious. The lighter side of all this:

| May-22-14 | | Shams: <WannaBe> Some of the better ones aren't on that page actually. One that I like goes, "You fail pregnancy test? I feel conflicted." |

 | | Annie K.: <Shams> heh, that's a really good one! :D Amy Tan's first two novels ('The Joy Luck Club' and 'The Kitchen God's Wife'), were quite good, and give a fascinating glimpse into both the fully Chinese and the Chinese-American mentality - I have already read two classic Chinese novels long before her books, and the ambience she portrays "rang true" to me - she just got a bit same-y same-y after them, I stopped reading after her fourth. Still, the first two are recommended. Um, speaking of chess. ;) |

<<playground_player> [...] But he was 10, and wasn't all that interested in chess: wanted to be a physicist or something.> Momma don't let your babies grow up to be physicists. Anything but that! (Even a chessplayer). |
