 | | Phony Benoni: <chessgames.com> In the past, I have been able to use a range of codes when searching by ECO in the Advanced Search, e.g., <D19-D23>. Now, such a search gives the error message, <"D19-D23" is not a valid ECO code."> |

 | | Domdaniel: The following note appears on the <Olimpbase> site (http://www.olimpbase.org/), re the China Chess League: <Though little attention is paid to the ChCL in Europe, it is actually extremely strong and fascinating event. It features many 2700+ grandmasters on regular basis including domestic stars Wang Hao, Wang Yue, Ding Liren, Bu Xiangzhi as well as a bunch of foreign players: Ivanchuk, Ponomariov, Malakhov, Short, Jobava, Motylev, Humpy, Yakovenko, Bologan and many, many more. Strongest teams come from Beijing, Shanghai and Shandong. ChCL is broadly covered live by its governing body, unfortunately only in Chinese: http://www.qipai.org.cn. Badly enough, ChCL managers have not yet discovered that putting together PGN files helps the games be saved for future generations, so ca. 45% games are missing, even from recent years. Please note: We did our best to provide best quality data and struggled to finally recover every game, every match from the very beginning. However, since there are virtually no credible non-Chinese sources, there may be minor discrepancies; some translations may be awkward or even nonsence. If you are familiar with Chinese chess or you are native Chinese speaker please consider supporting our project. Thank you.> I thought maybe somebody here would be able to access the Chinese sources, and subit games to CG. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Stonehenge> You are almost too quick to act here. After we do a big upload there is an aftermath. Sometimes poor quality games get weeded out 24-48 hour after they appear. Please do take a break, things might look better when you return. |

 | | chessgames.com: Some time ago, we sent the Chessgames PGN archive to a fellow named Randy Olson who wanted it for research purposes. His final work is very interesting, although to chess players most of his conclusions shouldn't be that surprising. Indeed, it's good to have the white pieces, and the higher your rating the better it is. For those who want to peruse his research, here are the links: http://www.randalolson.com/2014/05/... http://www.randalolson.com/2014/05/... http://www.randalolson.com/2014/05/... |

 | | Domdaniel: <CG> Randy Olson's analysis may be skewed by the fact that many of the games in the CG database have inaccurate player ratings. For instance, there are games from the 1960s which give the players ratings from decades later. I suspect that at least some of the games submitted to the database had the ratings at the time of submission, rather than the time the game was played. |

 | | WCC Editing Project:
Good afternoon.
I was wondering if it is possible to make a feature in which we could copy and paste a pgn score into a box, and then "click" on a button, and the box would tell us if that game score is already in our database? If it's technically possible, this might be really useful- not only saving admin time but also allowing members to see immediately if there are existing duplicate game scores that have the wrong opponents/year/site and such. |

 | | WCC Editing Project:
Good morning.
Aha!
Actually I just tried <Phony Benoni's> suggestion of manually testing a pgn score using the opening explorer. You click the moves into the Opening Explorer one at a time from the pgn you want to test. When you get past not that many moves, as it turns out, the OE database will show you if your pgn is in cg.com or not. I had thought this method might be really slow and laborious, but in fact it's easy and fast. It took me less than 30 seconds for me to test drive a pgn I want to submit. |
|
May-27-14
 | | WannaBe: Depending on the opening, I'd (just) high light the first X moves and copy/paste it at the bottom of the OE (Search by move) For Sicilian (especially Najdorf) you may need to high light up to 14+ moves, but for others (Scotch, Carol-Cann, Alapin) maybe 7 or 8 will be enough to distinguish. |

I had thought this method might be really slow and laborious, but in fact it's easy and fast.> Oh you poor dear, even if you find it easy you are still doing it the hard way. The trick is to use Opening Explorer Move Lookup which is now hardwired into the EZ Search for premium members. Let's say you have a game that starts like this 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Ng5 Bc5 5.Nxf7 Bxf2+ 6.Kxf2 Nxe4+ 7.Ke3 Qe7 8.c3 Nd4 9.Kxe4 Qh4+ 10.Ke3 Qf4+ 11.Kd3 d5 12.Bxd5 Bf5+ 13.Kc4 b5+ 14.Kc5 Qh4 15.Nxe5 O-O-O 16.c4 Rxd5+ 17.cxd5 Rd8 18.Nc3 Nc6 19.Qa4 To find it, just select those moves then paste them into the EZ Search on the homepage! Click "search" and voila, you get this: Opening Explorer Two games start with the moves up to 8.c3. You note that 8...Nd4 was only played in C Van de Loo vs M Hesseling, 1983, so that's probably your game--or if not, we don't have it. |

 | | chessgames.com: <I suspect that at least some of the games submitted to the database had the ratings at the time of submission, rather than the time the game was played.> That is a known problem, and we've taken some software remedies to fix it. One day we hope to be able to scan through games of at least the biggest players. So that our software will examine (say) Kasparov year by year and apply the official FIDE rating to every PGN we have. This brings up the question: where does one obtain historical FIDE rating data? |
|
May-27-14
 | | WannaBe: http://ratings.fide.com/ you can enter the name here, and search, which takes you here: http://ratings.fide.com/hist.phtml?...
Not sure if you can automate the process. |
