| May-29-14 | | twinlark: <chessgames.com> <Oh wow, look at that: http://www.olimpbase.org/Elo/Elo197... — that's exactly what we need.> It has some inaccuracies in the column dealing with games played in the rating period, but the ratings themselves seem to be fine. This is a great mainstay for bio writers looking for pre-2000 rating and ranking info. |

 | | chessgames.com: It has to do with URLs that end in periods and how CG likes to strip them away. I hacked it back to life for the time being. |

 | | chessgames.com: Note to self: I think I just realized why my previous efforts to convert those Unicode wikipedia links failed. CG software had been stripping off terminal semicolons. |

| May-31-14 | | PinnedPiece: I have an excellent N. Texas fiber optic connection but Chessgames servers seem awfully tardy at responding the last couple of days. What's going on? DOS attacks? . |

 | | chessgames.com: Pinned Piece, I doubt it's a DoS attack but we're aware of the problem and trying to isolate it. It seems to come and go: like molasses one minute and super-fast the next. |

| May-31-14 | | twinlark: <Hi ceegee>
I've cobbled together a bio as a tribute to the late great Dragoljub Velimirovic. Fortunately, this time all the footnotes fitted into the bio. The bio is kind of dry but is an attempt to provide a reasonably comprehensive overview of Velimirovic's amazing career, something which seems to be lacking in every obituary and eulogy I've seen so far. Unfortunately, I didn't get to his FIDE player card before the vandals in FIDE deleted his record. Could someone please send a bovver boy or two to string up by the thumbs whichever miscreant destroys such invaluable information when a chess player dies. Anyway, if anyone wants to make amendments or additions, please let me know at Biographer Bistro. |

 | | chessgames.com: Oh, it may be actually be a DoS attack of sorts.
I don't want to get into too many details as the hacker could easily be reading this forum, but here's some good advice: If you can find your password on this list http://www.symantec.com/connect/blo... (Symantec's 500 worst passwords of all time) you should change it immediately. I'm not sure if we can pin the intermittent server load on this one hacker, but it's the best explanation we've got so far. Sorry for the inconvenience. |

| May-31-14 | | thegoodanarchist: I think that this note by J. Lowenthal would make a great quote of the day: "The prompt advantage which Mr. Morphy takes of the slightest error of his opponent, is the chief characteristic of his game..." from the 22nd move of this game:

| May-31-14 | | DcGentle: Hi <chessgames.com>! Well, I am not sure, but my impression is, that the discussion pages of various openings are not well known or used for that matter. For example today we have as opening of the day the Smith Morra gambit, and I know that unfortunately the ECO code <B21> does comprise other variants as well, but we have nothing better. And at least there is a discussion page, but not so easy to find, maybe. Here is my suggestion, you could add the link to the discussion page, today: <B21> (Sicilian, 2.f4 and 2.d4 (B21)) to the announcement box of the opening of the day on the main page, if this is not too much trouble. Greetings,
<DC> |

 | | Domdaniel: < 500 worst passwords of all time> I wondered why "zxcvbn" was ranked between "tiffany" and "tomcat" ... and then I glanced at my keyboard. |

 | | chessgames.com: A long long time ago I used the password <qawsedrftg> and had my account hacked in about a month. That's when my network admin showed me a little script called "keyboard tricks" that compiled a list of every possible way you can walk your fingers up and down a keyboard in some sort of pattern. And I thought I was being clever! |

Jun-01-14
 | | chessgames.com: <DcGentle> The problem with that approach -- as you noted yourself -- is that many of the openings we feature are lumped together with other openings. A horrific example is Andersson's Opening 1.a3 which is simply A00 and found in the same category as 1.b3 and 1.g3 and 1.Nh3 and a number of offbeat first moves. To make matters worse it's not always clear which ECO page is the most relevant. If the opening is simply "Slav Defense" there are at least 20 chapter in ECO that deal with the many variations. Picking the earliest one is often inappropriate because that only contains the Slav Defense with very unusual early deviations. |
|
| Jun-01-14 | | DcGentle: <chessgames.com>: Yes, I see your point. Maybe we can do without referring to the ECO code explicitly, something like this: Opening of the day: ...
Further discussion see here ---> Link.
(or something like this)
It's only to point interested users to a place where to discuss the topic.
The problem with several pages could be solved by referring to an index page which would simply list all relevant sub pages. Of course this is more work. A simpler solution would be just to omit a special link and write something like: "For discussion see the relevant ECO pages". Just an idea.
Thanks for the reply, <DC> |

 | | chessgames.com: The news "leaked" a little early, so now it can be told. Germany's top player, Arkadij Naiditsch, is the one who will take up the gauntlet on June 16 with the 11th Chessgames GM Challenge. All members are encouraged to sign-up here:

I was taught not-to in my infancy, and rumors of subsequent incidents have never been proven. |
