 | | chessgames.com: <Stonehenge: I can paste the moves, but they are all on one line. It shouldn't be like that.> I know exactly what's going on.
It came to our attention that a good number of PGN games were being skipped because of browser-controlled word wrapping. You see, web text areas can have a tag set which makes them wrap text so that it's not all on one line. Usually this feature is "on" by default. However, some browsers have different rules about when and what to break. One browser in particular had the very nasty habit of breaking O-O into O- on one line, and an extra O on the next. Likewise, it turned 1/2-1/2 into two different words. This was causing no ends of problems. Some uploaders inevitably had 1-2% of their games rejected without human intervention, even though they did nothing wrong themselves. So the quick-and-dirty solution was simply to turn word wrap off. And it seems like the right solution: we are just accepting exactly the text you provided and not modifying it one bit. Is it really a big inconvenience? |

 | | Stonehenge: A small inconvenience. I can't say I like it though. |

 | | chessgames.com: <offramp> Temporary accident. Try again, sorry. <Stonehenge> I can see how it's a nuisance, but after all, you are the one giving us text lines that are a mile long. Perhaps a more robust approach would be to allow the browsers to potentially mangle the PGN and then have the software reconstruct it, looking out specifically for things like broken O-O, O-O-O, and 1/2-1/2. Bear with us for now. We'll find a way to keep everybody happy. |

 | | Check It Out: <chessgames.com> When viewing game pages on my iPhone I encounter some issues: 1. I can't see the dates or avatars of posts/posters. 2. The chessboard has an annoying small shift as I click through the games. 3. Scrolling up and down the game page is sticky.
4. There are no features between the game moves and the kibitzing area. Are these common problems?
Thank you. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Check it Out>
All of those issues are known to us except for #2, <2. The chessboard has an annoying small shift as I click through the games.> You mean to say when you go forward or backward a move, the entire board wiggles a little bit? I've not seen that. It sounds dreadful. May I ask, what iPhone model do you use? The lack of dates and other links is intentional. We are trying to keep the page and simple and compact as possible. You can always turn off mobile mode from your Chessgames Preferences Page by selecting <Disable mobile features (even on mobile devices)>. We are going to soon install a button on the game page that says "switch to normal view" / "switch to mobile view" so that members can flip between the two modes easily without fiddling with their preferences. |

 | | chessgames.com: Wait--you can't see the avatars of posters at all? Are you sure it's not just a bad connection and the graphics didn't load? The avatars should be visible. |

 | | chessgames.com: About <3. Scrolling up and down the game page is sticky.> That's a problem not likely to go away soon. The problem is that pgn4web has "hot squares" so when you put your finger on the board in an attempt to scroll, instead it triggers the hot-key. After some practice I got good at scrolling by touching the area above or below the board. This issue was part of the motivation behind the button at the top of the mobile pages, that says "kibitzing". All it does it take you down to the kibitzing area. That way you don't need to scroll manually to get there. |

 | | Check It Out: <chessgames.com> Scratch that one about the avatars, I can see them. <You mean to say when you go forward or backward a move, the entire board wiggles a little bit?> Exactly. I'm using the iPhone 5s. |

 | | Check It Out: Now that you explain the sticky scrolling is due to the pgn4web and I actually saw there was a button that takes you to kibitzing that's not such an issue now. Thanks! |

Try saying "j'adoube". And if that fails, "abracadabra". |

 | | offramp: Here is a suggestion for the future.
If one is on the page for, for example, Igor Arkadievich Zaitsev, and one sees a mention of an unlinked game, for example against Viktor Storozhenko, then the only way to find the game is via the front page. How about a small box on each players' page that says, <"Find games of this player versus:".>? Typing in a name would then give all the games between those two. It may be more useful than it sounds. |

 | | Penguincw: Hi <cg>. I suggested this idea a long time ago, but can't remember if I got a response. Anyway, I know you guys have <Opening> Explorer, <Sacrifice> Explorer, etc. Would it be possible to have a <Checkmate> Explorer? I know this would probably take a long time to put together, but I'm hoping it can be achieved in the future. Possible "categorizations" could include "checkmate with a bishop", "checkmate with a rook", etc. It's probably not the best idea, but I got some game collections that I would like to try to fill up. Thanks. :) |
|
Jun-28-14
 | | chessgames.com: <Penguincw> That's not a bad idea, but it's the kind of feature that would be so little used it wouldn't justify making a special search form. What we'd probably do instead is write software to scan the database for such occurrences and then produce a list. Of course we'd be happy to share the list with you for purposes of your collections. We've already done things like that to produce "themed puzzle weeks", for example there's a program somewhere that looks for games with more than two queens, and again for stalemates. That helped us assemble "stalemate week", and "polyamorous week". Search for mates with specific pieces sounds pretty easy: just look for the # at the end of the score and see what piece was moved. Although that might run into wrinkles with discovered checkmates. (If I move my bishop to reveal a rook checkmate, did I checkmate you with a bishop or a rook? I guess it depends on how you look at it.) Another interesting search would be mates with less material than you're supposed to be able to mate with. J Nogueiras vs M Gongora Reyes, 2001 comes to mind: White had only a single knight and achieved mate. There can't possibly be too many of those; it usually only crops up in compositions. |

 | | chessgames.com: Thanks OCF. I have this bad habit of editing sentences over and over again until they are no longer English. I think we can just go with "should set". |
