chessgames.com: <Annie> Thanks for that. We'll should make a help file that makes the official one obsolete. Paolo will love us for it.

  Annie K.: <cg: <We'll should>>

And politicians will love you for this brand new tense! ;)

You're welcome. :)

Jul-13-14  zanzibar: <chessgames> yes, changing a default behavior is always problematic.

Let me suggest this then, turning the date (on the left) to a link to the post.

A new behavior, and because of the association with a timestamp, perhaps more intuitive behavior.

And perhaps not so hard to code up?

chessgames.com: <zanzibar> That's not a bad suggestion, I like it. It's obscure, but intuitive in a way. The datestamp takes you to the chronological positioning, that's not a huge surprise. Either way you end up on the right page, so what's the worst that can happen?

<Annie> Yes, we'll can!

Annie K.: You have my vote!! =)

I really like the datestamp for direct link idea too. Not to mention (why do we say "not to mention' when we obviously do just that?) the idea of using the datestamps on posts as permalinks to the posts... :)

  chessgames.com: OK, done and done.

As zanzibar suggested, on the Recent Kibitzing Page page clicking a date will take you to the exact post.

And as Annie suggested, on normal kibitzing pages like this one, the date is now a link. Not so much for clicking on, but if you right click on the date and choose "copy", you'll get a permalink to the post in question.

Jul-13-14  zanzibar: <chessgames> I think that's just awesome! Hope it proves useful in practice.

Many thanks for giving it the green light.

Jul-13-14  davide2013: Thanks Annie K. because I don't know why, but with the browser I'm using I couldn't see the squares/function. Now I've copied in a word document the list, so I can access it easily.

WannaBe: My (further) 2 cents on the new feature, by clicking on the date takes you directly to the post:

There are many pages around here, where posts are loooooong, such that even if you click on kibitz'n arrow, you then have to go through 24 looooong posts to read the one you want.

Mobile devices just don't have the 'End' button that takes you directly to the bottom of the page. Without have to do a 'hack'. See: https://discussions.apple.com/threa...

I like this new feature. A LOT!! =)

Jul-15-14  whiteshark: <chessgames.com: We were having intermittent network connectivity issues in the early hours of the morning today, which I believed has been resolved. If anybody continues to have such problems please let me know.> It's not over, quite the contrary: as a 'frequent user' it feels like almost every 2nd attempt fails. :(

chessgames.com: We've come to learn that it's actually a massive denial of service attack that our hosting company is struggling with (not aimed at CG specifically). It seems they have it under control now, but it's so intermittent it's hard to tell.

On an unrelated note, we are going to reboot the servers and perform minor maintenance tomorrow afternoon around 2pm. The outage will hopefully not last more than 15 minutes.

WannaBe: I don't know how difficult this would be to implement, but...

In the Biel 2014 home page, how about a link (somewhere) to Biel 2013, and once Biel 2015 have a page, have a link to the 2014 page, and on the 2014 page a link to the 2015 page? And have 2013 link to both 2012/2014...

(Kinda like the World Chess Championship pages, where one links to the other)

However, this would also be on the Gilbraltar 2014 page, Dortmund page, Norway Chess Challenge, etc... (Even possibly the 3 years of MTel, or was it 4 years of MTel?)

Then later on, we can link all the US Open, World Open, U.S. Championship (men/women), Dutch Championship (again, both), New Zealand Championship, Chinese Championship, Rapid/Blitz Championship, Team Championship... (You get the idea).

And hence, we eventually will have a single theory that will unify Physics. (Or as I call it, The-WannaBe-String-Cheese-Theory).

DOS attacks?

Why would they target a particular server company? Sounds well out of order.

I'd just like to add to <whiteshark's> report that I'm experiencing severe connectivity problems again, and it is nowhere near the 2pm Florida Standard Time given for site maintenance.

I really hope your servers can defeat the pirates.

chessgames.com: I'm watching the network right now. It's almost like clockwork: 15 seconds online, 15 seconds offline, over and over again.

I'm sorry there's nothing more that we can say other than we'll keep you posted.

Jul-16-14  WinKing: Well I hope they get the culprits responsible for messing with your website. Strange that it is an intermittent thing. Does seem to be getting a little worse lately though.
Jul-16-14  MarkFinan: Do you guys know that there's an Android app called "chess masters" in the google play store that once you open it and click on say, Kasparov : best games, it brings you directly to the Kasparov page here?? Or is it your app? I guess if it is your app then it's none of my business, but if not shouldn't you be getting paid?
Jul-16-14  Memethecat: i've been having trouble with opening explorer for the past week, 1 in 3 pages load, the other 2 return a blank page. its not my system cos everything else is working fine.

what to do?
