I'd bet my version of that song would get deleted, just like this post might.. I just wanted to know. When are the next live games on this site? I thought the Bilbao tournament would but I guess I'll have to switch to chess dot con? Lol. That's a joke albeit bad, but seriously when will the next live tournament be? |

Thanks, it's fixed now. <MarkFinan> We're not covering Bilbao entirely but we might show some games near the end. The Tal Memorial is in October, that's always good. Of course, in November all eyes will be on Sochi. |

The National Chess Centre was developed
by GM Murray Chandler of Gambit Books (Chess Books). George Trundle Masters & Challengers
The annual George Trundle events are always fascinating battles. This year the Master's section features one GM (Darryl Johansen from Australia) and four IMs, Anton Smirnov (AUS), Vladimir Smirnov (AUS), Gary Lane (AUS) & Paul Garbett (NZ). The remaining five players (Smith, Steadman, Zelesco, McLaren & Polischuk) are fighting for possible International Master norms. In a tight-knit Challengers section, just 126 rating points separate the field of 10 players.
NZCF is hosting this year's event, 27th September-October 5th. Games start 2pm daily at the National Chess Centre in Devonport, spectators welcome.
Pictured: 13-year-old Australian prodigy Anton Smirnov (near right) will be the player to watch in the Masters section. In the past I have played in 2 of the Challengers and had some interesting games but no dramatic results. But while there may be no CG members or 'Super Chess People' or GMs etc it may still be interesting. |

On the menu on the right it tells me there are about 55 games, but when I click on search database from this position, only 5 games come up. Where did the other 50 games go? |

I am thinking specifically about the 50-move rule, which is waived for tablebase wins under ICCF rules. It seems to me that this situation could possibly arise in the current Chessgames Challenge. Does GM Naiditch know about this exception from FIDE Laws? I think you ought to clear this up before any possible dispute might arise. |

When I first saw it perform that way I thought the software was buggy until I realized it was being smarter than I was. There is a brief explanation at the Opening Explorer Help Page under the section <When I add up the number of games in the moves column, it's bigger/smaller than the total number of games that contain the position shown. How can that be?> I've gone into more detail in the subject here which we could look up if you require further elaboration. |

Embarrassingly I did not know the ICCF stance on the 50 move rule. FIDE has waffled on the issue many times and finally settled on the original rule, "50 moves, no exceptions." This went back to the 20s before computer analysis had anything to do with it: humans were actually the first to discover that some mates take longer than 50 moves. I can see the sense in the ICCF using tablebase as a flawlessly impartial judge of positions. No longer is it required to stay on top of the cutting-edge endgame theory to evaluate a position. However, we've never made a statement on the subject, so I believe we are forced to adhere to what one may regard as "orthodox chess rules", the ones that FIDE uses presently. In other words: 50 moves, no exceptions. Adhering to ICCF rules in the future is definitely a consideration. |
