Indeed. There are some posters on this site who act like damn fools at times. Perhaps they really don't care if their posts are offensive.

He could fool us once
he could fool us twice
but he could not fool us trice.

Sep-28-14  Benzol: <chessgames> You should now be able to access the first round games from the George Trundle tournament at http://www.newzealandchess.co.nz/Ve...

Domdaniel: <SwitchingQ> Um, I don't know. Losing Ed Trice was like a minor extinction event - exit Triceratopsy and related dinosaurs. But losing La Polgar seems rather more significant. I, for one, would prefer to have her around.

Oct-03-14  YouRang: On the "PREVIEW YOUR KIBITZ" page, I find that sometimes when I'm typing text, the edit box gets into a weird mode with the display of its horizontal and vertical scrollbars.

In the worst case, the scrollbars to alternately appear and disappear with every character that I type. It doesn't happen all the time, so I'm not sure exactly what the conditions are that cause it to happen. Usually I notice it when editing a lengthy post (long enough to require vertical scrolling), and I go back to make modifications to earlier parts of the post. Also, it happens most when I'm typing at the bottom of the edit box, or just at the right edge.

But it's annoying to say the least, because every time scrollbars appear or disappear, the size of the editing area changes, and the text has to be reformatted accordingly, causing it (and the cursor) to jump around while I'm typing.

I'm wonder why it's necessary for the edit box to have a horizontal scrollbar at all, rather than just allowing the text to wrap? If it is necessary, perhaps it can be made permanent?

chessgames.com: <YouRang> I have never seen a horizontal scrollbar on the Preview Kibitz page, nor can I replicate it. It should be word wrapping by default. What platform (browser, OS) are you using?
Oct-03-14  YouRang: <chessgames.com> I am using Win7 and Chrome. I don't recall if I've seen it in other browsers or not.

So that you know I'm not crazy, I emailed a video of the problem to chess@chessgames.com. Let me know if you don't get it.

chessgames.com: I know you're not crazy, I've seen that phenomenon elsewhere, but I forget the platform. Thanks for the video.
Oct-04-14  YouRang: FWIW, I haven't been able to reproduce the problem on my Win8/IE browser computer. Maybe it's a Chrome thing?

chessgames.com: It takes just the right combination of something.

Does it always happen to you or just some of the time?

I believe there is a way to explicitly turn the horizontal scrollbar off; when I find out how to do that I'll try the fix and let you know.

chessgames.com: <YouRang> It seems to be a known bug in Chrome that has to do with some sort of rounding problem. I just tried adding a piece of code ("overflow-x:hidden;") designed to suppress that. Try it again please.
Oct-06-14  Thanh Phan: <chessgames.com> Only a few times have we encountered the fabled horizontal scrollbar, with chrome webbrowser providing the results, other browsers appear to not have this problem, will continue to monitor the results if still needed
Oct-06-14  zanzibar: Just a small question on a small matter, but I was wondering why the following E-Z search

<wippermann mamedov>

Only produces games for Mamedov and not Wippermann (yes, I know there's no pairing, but why one and not the other)?

search "wippermann mamedov"

(Actually, why Vepkhvishvili?)

E-Z provided Mamedov link:

Mamedov (1 game)

Wippermann

Till Wippermann (73 games)

AdvSearch Mamedov:

chessgames.com: EZ search tries to make the best guess as to what player you are talking about, then doggedly sticks to it. The advanced search shows all players which are even possible guesses. That's why we often say that EZ Search is good for the most famous players: that's the situation that it excels at.

What's needed is a way to disambiguate searches, e.g. in the style of Google: "Showing games for Larry M Evans, did you mean Captain William Davies Evans instead?"

Okay, I just gave it a pretty good test, and saw no flashing scrollbar problems. Thank you. :-)

Website development would be so much easier if the various browsers didn't have their little distinguishing quirks.

Oct-07-14  firebrandx: None of my ICCF games I submitted have been added to the database, with many of them being wins against other ICCF players that have several games posted here. I've waited several months and still nothing. What did I do wrong?

OhioChessFan: FIDE Grand Prix Baku (2014)

The crosstable is using 2 different names for Dominguez. Game 29 for the first time lists him as Dominguez Perez and it created a new entrant with one game played.

Penguincw: More FIDE Grand Prix Baku (2014), on the Live Broadcast Page it says Andreikin-Caruana. I thought it was going to be Caruana-Svidler.

chessgames.com: <no flashing scrollbar problems> That's a relief, I was afraid that it was unfixable.

<firebrandx> You didn't do anything wrong, please check again.

<I thought it was going to be Caruana-Svidler> Oh indeed you are right. Caruana vs Svidler, 2014 it is.

Oct-07-14  firebrandx: Thanks for adding those games, although I'm guessing they were just added because I asked, right? ;-)
