The admin sees a list of contributions which can be sorted by username, size, type, and most importantly by "time waiting." I'm actually processing games right now so I'll give you a little window into what the process looks like. I see this poor fellow who's been waiting since 2013 and I review his submission. It's been reviewed earlier this year without decision, now it's time for me to finalize it. His first game looks like this: [Event "?"]

I have several complaints. The [Event "?"] and [Site "?"] is pretty shoddy. No ratings, so I wonder how strong they are. I play through a King's Gambit, it has the typical swashbuckle you expect from that opening. But nothing special that I can see. If you want a game like this to be inserted it would help if you filled out the comments, like "To my knowledge this is the first time 12.Nxe5 has ever been played." or "Black has been a tournament director in Wisconsin for over 50 years" or something that explains why it should be included. Verdict: rejected.
It sort of makes me feel bad, because this guy might have typed the game in by hand, but it doesn't meet our standards. I take solace in the fact that I'm not deleting his contribution, just shuttling it to a backup directory of old forgotten submissions. Conceivably one day this could rise from the grave in an upcoming feature. Now it's clear if I continue this, I might never get up to the Sep/Nov 2014 submissions, so I scroll to the top of the list and find somebody who's been waiting for a while, but not eons. So glancing at the top of the list, I see waustad. Been waiting for a month. OK, waustad's turn it is. Only one game: [Event "Steirische Landesliga 2014/2015"]

Beautiful. I play through it just to make sure the PGN works, not so much to judge the play quality. The white player is famous, the black player's name rings a bell. Verdict: inserted. I wish they all could be that easy. Note that I'm not processing game-by-game but rather member-by-member. So if you uploaded a game yesterday it could easily be inserted today, along with all of your other games that you've been waiting on. (I see you've been waiting since the 20th. We'll get to them soon.) I went through those two just to give you a flavor of the process. It's very pell mell, I know. Comes to mind that old saying about people who enjoy sausages — they shouldn't see how they are made. <I appreciate that you cannot simply wave through all submissions without review, but it's frustrating not knowing when, or if, one's contributions will appear.> I sympathize and it's clear that this is not an efficient way to work. We'll have a better system one day. It's my belief that this job can only be accomplished effectively by crowdsourcing. |

Are you aware that if you were a Chessgames Editor you could change this information without the need for Librarian action? Look at the first section, "GAME EDITING", in the Chessgames Editor Guide. Becoming an editor is entirely voluntary and I've never asked that anybody volunteer, but I can say this much: if you email me to ask to become an editor, I would be inclined to approve you. |

Just recently we donated some data to a group at MIT who produced those cool live statistics during Millionaire Chess. Unfortunately this fellow is going about it the wrong way. I'm sure he's not a spambot, I see a sincere chess researcher. Nevertheless, it's spamming by definition. I wrote him an email to explain that. |

The nonstandard PGN tags won't show up in the final version online, but it doesn't do any harm to include them. <Also - you actually play over each game by hand? Do you have also have a program check for legal PGN?> Not each and every game: if somebody submits a batch of 40 games we might play through the first two or three to make sure things looks kosher. Yes, there are multiple layers which check for valid PGN. In spite of that there are still a few quirky things that you can do to get bad PGN into the database, for example neglecting to use the "x" to denote a capture. |

Here's the trick if you want to see posts that mention you, that weren't posted by you: search for <-user:Fusilli Fusilli> Search Kibitzing If you really want to be a "super user" then you can go to Menu Configuration Page and add a line in the "EXTRAS" called "self-search" that links to the above. Now you can search for yourself at any time from any page. |

In particular, for historic games I would like to use the <Source> tag to note which primary/secondary sources were used. E.g. some of the Pillsbury games I got from <Pope> referenced both him and his source (i.e. the contemporaneous newspapers he used). <

So here both <Purse> and <Sources> are two tags which would be nice to keep. And another "while we're here", if you look at the game on <CG> the <FEN> tag doesn't seem to be used for the initial board position (with the odds-match giving move + KBP) for the game, Pillsbury vs Burille, 1891 So, the fourth move 4...Nf7 cannot be played.
Then, returning to PGN tags, consider an Interzonal game submission. <Carolus> adds some very useful tags, like < <White/Black>Team >, etc. Even the <ELO> tags can be useful, to indicate the players contemporaneous rating at the time of play. Can any consideration be given to retaining these tags? |

In this position, Kasparov captured the rook on d1 with the pawn on c2, and said "Queen!", indicating that the promoted piece was a queen. However, no queen was immediately available. It took some time for the arbiter to come up with a black queen. Kasparov said that if he had been attentive, he would have promoted to a rook, which was available. Kasparov's clock was running while the arbiter was getting a queen, so he started Karpov's clock. Karpov immediately played 25.Qxe4 and Kasparov told him that he was in check. Karpov replied "From what? It might be a bishop on d1." The clocks were stopped. The arbiter found a black queen, the game was backed up to the position after 24...cxd1=Q+, and Karpov was given an extra two minutes on his clock because of Kasparov's illegal move (since starting the opponent's clock signified the completion of his move, which was not possible without a piece to promote to). Kasparov disputes that he made an illegal move. Kasparov soon won the game, however (Kasparov 2010:332).>>> Ceegee..
