<Is there any chance you could create a subset of the birthday list that would display chessgames members birthdays? I always find myself wishing other members happy birthday after the actual event because I've missed it.> We don't really maintain a list of "players who are also members." If somebody was sufficiently motivated I suppose they could make such a list using game collections.

chessgames.com: <notyetagm> I'm terribly sorry, the URL changed on us and we didn't notice.

  chessgames.com: Technical note:

We have switched to Unicode symbols for the chess pieces used in kibitzing, e.g.: ♔♕♖♘♗♙. We are getting away from those tiny graphics. You still invoke the graphics by typing inside { braces } but instead of converting it to graphics, it converts it to Unicode.

We also have the symbols for:

"with the idea of / threatening" = Δ
"only move" = ▢
"unclear" = ∞

There are still a few graphic symbols that have not yet been converted to Unicode, e.g. and . We're working on those next.

This has many advantages, including the ability to scale when you change text size, and it works with copy-and-paste.

If anybody is unable to see the Unicode pieces please let us know what kind of platform you are using.

Annie K.: My new work computer, with Win 8.1 and default browser IE 11 (with Western European encoding, I believe), can't see the "only move" symbol.

Neither can Safari 3.1 on the same computer, nor my iPhone 3G.

Unless it's *supposed* to be a square. ;s

Rest of the characters are fine on all three.

chessgames.com: <Unless it's *supposed* to be a square. ;s > In fact, the "only move" symbol is actually supposed to be a square. That's the one unicode character that works even when it doesn't :-)

OhioChessFan: I'm on Internet Explorer. The pieces are really ummmmmm......not sharply defined? Something. Horrible compared to previously. The only move square looks a little blobbish on the right side.

Can't I just apply here and now to your most wise and solicitous suggestion? Why burden the Net with further superfluous material? In time, we can consider terms for a full partnership.

WannaBe: <OCF> Looks a lot clearer/better on iPad with Safari, but yes, with IE (I use 11) it does look a little fuzzy and not sharp.

Chrome v39 doesn't look any better, FireFox 34 looks pretty crappy, too.

I have noticed that the forum for user:DcGentle DcGentle chessforum has been closed and that he has not kibitzed this site since July 28.

I take it his health has gone down hill? Hopefully I am wrong.

chessgames.com: <notyetagm> DcGentle didn't close his forum explicitly; his premium membership lapsed. We have no idea of his situation other than the fact he hasn't been on the site in months. We do wish him the best.

Annie K.: <cg> I wonder if you could improve the clarity of those figurines by forcing them to be displayed at +1 size from the normal font?

Or would that formatting just get lost when copy pasting, thereby, to a lesser extent, repeating the "uncopyable" problem with the old icon figurines.
