 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: <cg> There's a problem - I couldn't claim the prize for klu #2 because I had supposedly already hit the five prize limit. I'm not <that> good :) I remember <Domdaniel> had the same problem in 2009 when he couldn't claim the prize for klu #9. I had to log in from the sock account <cheesecookie> to claim the prize; hopefully you can transfer the four months to my regular account. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Switching> I'm so sorry! We hack the code every year when people hit the limit and I'm supposed to unhack it at the start of each year. I'm glad nobody beat you to the prize. I'll transfer the cheese over to your main account :-) Thanks for pointing this out. |

| Dec-11-14 | | zanzibar: Doing this this side-avenue of consultation games got me wondering... How does <CG> do <Advanced Searches> for multi-player teams? It seems I can't find the proper string to use for White in this game: <Charousek & Macro -- Fahndrich & Halprin
0-1 (42) C28p 1897
Vienna AUT: Vienna (1.3)>
Should I use <Charousek / Macro>? This is the result:
http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches... Even if I specify the year (1897) I get lots of games I don't want: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches... |

| Dec-11-14 | | YouRang: Cool "feature"!
Use the search utility to find occurrences of the word "border". It shows a bunch of normally hidden occurrences of the word. For instance, the latest move by the world team showed up as: <34.Kh2
FINAL VOTE TALLY:
border=0 cellpadding=1 cellspacing=0 bgcolor=#996633>
border=0 cellpadding=3 cellspacing=0 bgcolor=#FFFFEE> Also, it seems to find every post that has a FEN diagram, and following every FEN diagram, the font changes from sanserif to serif. If I ever want to find all posts where I included a FEN diagram, I just search for <user:yourang border>! :-) |

 | | Domdaniel: <YouRang> - < For instance, the latest move by the world team showed up as:> Um, isn't that giving away a trade secret? I don't know who it might matter to, but aren't these games meant to be confidential? <Zanzibar> Have you tried "Marco" instead of "Macro"?
It doesn't seem to help your query much, but it is a step forward, in a sense. |
|
| Dec-11-14 | | YouRang: Hi <Domdaniel>!
<Um, isn't that giving away a trade secret? I don't know who it might matter to, but aren't these games meant to be confidential?> Our GM opponent will have already seen the move I mentioned, so it's no secret from him. Anyone else can freely visit the 'chessgames challenge' page and see what moves have been made, so it's no secret from them. Who did I leave out?
But if it is supposed to be a secret, then the powers that are protecting it are about as feeble as can be. |

 | | Domdaniel: <YouRang> You are, of course, quite right. Apologies. Sometimes the idea of being confidential overrules the practicalities. |
|
| Dec-11-14 | | zanzibar: <Dom> yes, thanks, that was a stupid typo on my part. Here's the search results if you type the names properly: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches... The problem is that <CG> is missing the <"Marco / Charousek"> game (in addition to my stupid typo). Doing an advanced search on <charousek / faehndrich> is the same as doing it for <faehnrich / charousek>, both yielding: Hugo Faehndrich / Rudolf Charousek
It does work if you spell the names properly, and <CG> has the team. (Bottom line, don't do typos on <CG>) |

 | | chessgames.com: <zanzibar> A little experimenting and the search seems to have a little robustness. For example I type <Schlechter & Marco> and I get a link to Schlechter / Marco as well as Janowski / Marco / Schlechter / Lawrence (http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches...) How important is it really to search team games? The most prolific team only has a handful of games in the database. Searches like "Schlechter / Marco, Ruy Lopez, over 30 moves" is something you can just do by inspection. <YouRang> Yes, searching for HTML is an "undocumented feature." |
|
| Dec-12-14 | | zanzibar: <CG> I think I shot myself in the foot by a combination of factors - <CG> not having a game I was looking for, and my mistyping Marco, and being too tired. I just assumed <CG> was parsing out the one name - but the <CG> behavior is OK, as you point out, and as I tried to indicate in my last post. Of course, I almost always have an idea or two about an improvement here or there... but I a little tired at the moment, and have learned my lesson! (For today...)
Thanks. |

| Dec-12-14 | | MuzioFan: <CG>: Black's 33rd move in the chessgames challenge came with check, the 'moves' section should be changed. |
|
| Dec-12-14 | | YouRang: <<YouRang> Yes, searching for HTML is an "undocumented feature."> Well, the searcher may not actually have HTML in mind when entering those words. Given the surprising and (I would think) unintended consequences, it's sort of a bug. I've noticed some other search terms causing odd behavior are "align", "face", "table", "size", "height', and "width". Interestingly, other tags like "background" don't seem to have this problem. |
|
| Dec-12-14 | | Alien Math: <YouRang> If you select control + shift + Q to inspect element you able to find Inspector to view where those words appear on page, along with some other words that should react same |

 | | chessgames.com: It's an old joke among computer programmers that the term "undocumented feature" means the same thing as "bug". |
|
| Dec-13-14 | | YouRang: <"undocumented feature" means the same thing as "bug".> Yes, if it's in quotes (which you did).
However, I wasn't sure if that joke was intended, since I'm not sure you knew that I was a programmer. I'm sure there are some "undocumented features" in code that I've written, but I wouldn't refer to them as such to our clients. :-) |

| Dec-13-14 | | Gregor Samsa Mendel: Is there any reason why I can see the chessforums of some members but not others? I can't see the forums of <TheFocus> and <Colonel Mortimer>. |
|
Dec-13-14
 | | chancho: <Gregor> Their Forums are not opened. |
|
| Dec-13-14 | | Gregor Samsa Mendel: <chancho>--When I look at chessforum activity, I can see a comment from <TheFocus> on his forum. Does that mean that he opened his forum, made a comment on it, and then closed it? Strange. |
|
Dec-13-14
 | | chancho: Well, sometimes these guys like to close their forums, only to open them again later. |
|
Dec-13-14
 | | chancho: I checked <TheFocus> forum. It's closed. |

| Dec-13-14 | | SugarDom: It's more probable that <The Focus> premium subscription is expiring today. |
