Richard Taylor: It is now a day passed New Year. I think I was the first to say Happy New Year. I was mucking around on my computer (preparing openings?) and later I read a book, then fireworks broke out so I posted...so there's one of those Na Na Naa! I was first, so there!

Childish, but a strangely human thing to want to be. No?

This is a better place than the Kib's Cafe.

So although it is now the 2nd of Jan it is still the New Year so:

Happy New Year!

To <chessgames.com> and everyone here on the site.

Richard Taylor: <chessgames.com> Thanks for that. Great. Not sure if all the games will be high quality but some will be of quite some interest. Considering the Australian Champs is on we still have quite a lot of Australian players. Also German, Danish, Chinese and other GMs and IMs etc and many players of quite a range of nationalities...

Meanwhile New Years Day was hailed in with an 'organised riot' by thousands of young inebriated revelers at Gisborne (where my mate moved as the houses were cheap and it was quiet!); two (intrepid, or insane?) German climbers are lost on Mt Cook, Aoraki, but most other people are enjoying the beaches or whatever the non-chess players do...

Richard Taylor: <chessgames.com: You gave GM Rasmussen quite a fight, but he seemed to have an answer for everything.>

No I made a silly oversight, otherwise he was in serious time trouble. He had to rely on the weaker player making an error: and of course it happens. But I was pleased with that game. Of course he is mostly way out of my league.

Today, to compensate I played a terrible game and was duly punished. I forgot to analyse that part of my book or look on CG.com. Also I should have exchanged White's B on d3 and all sorts of things. I exchanged too early on c3 which is not very good either. The lesson to be learned is one I keep falling into, that is, playing developing moves and forgetting to think of alternatives. Or not assessing the position carefully, relying too much trying to recall what was supposed to be played...something like that. In any case, I uncorked a really bad one.

My poor friend McClaren and fellow club member succumbed to Sukandar. He is struggling to get out of the 2100 - 2200 range he's been in. His struggle is more "tragic" than mine as he puts a lot more into chess...

Weather still humid and quite sunny, roads busy as people come home from drowning at the beaches or getting lost at sea, or on a mountain (incredible as it may seem, NZ has these terrible, very large, adn cold mountains, and maniacs, who don't realise they could have a lovely time going mad safely playing chess, kill themselves by sailing down rivers, fishing or climbing these terrible mountains (inevitably without the proper equipment, such as crampons, boots, morse code machines, chocolate, parachutes, or locator beacons...)

The sacrifice of an entire rook, in the move 18, is not bright enough to this database?

More than that, I also like to know what is the criteria to refuse Games Top Gms or world champions (I had refused Euwe games). But I am truly amazed at the refusal of this brilliant game of Paul Keres

That game's been in the database since it first went public: Keres vs Taimanov, 1951

Jan-03-15  zanzibar: Another little nit - today's <Chess Notes> by Dondis & Chase had the game <Shankland--Bajarani (Al Ain, UAE, 2014)>

I made the mistake of looking for <Shankland--Ain> using the <Advanced Search>:

http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches...

It returns this message:

<Player search: SHANKLAND

Sorry, no games at this time.>

This is a little confusing, why is SHANKLAND singled out in the return message?

It's actually AIN who isn't found.

Shouldn't the return message cite both players?

Jan-03-15  zanzibar: To continue a little:

<Advanced Search: Shankland & Bajarani>

<Player search: SHANKLAND
Player search: BAJARANI

Sorry, no games at this time.>

This is what I'd expect - no games, and both search terms listed.

* * * * *

But if I mis-type the 2nd player's name:

<Advanced Search: Shankland & Barjarani>

<Player search: SHANKLAND

Sorry, no games at this time.>

And here the 2nd term is not listed. Ironic, since it is the incorrect term causing the search miss.

chessgames.com: <<Player search: SHANKLAND / Sorry, no games at this time.> This is a little confusing, why is SHANKLAND singled out in the return message?> Yes, that is confusing, but it's not broken per se. When you see something like

Player search: SHANKLAND

that means "I've parsed part of your search to mean, find all players that match SHANKLAND. OK, no problem."

You don't see "Player search: AIN" because it was not able to form a sensible query clause out of that portion of your search. It doesn't tell you about what went wrong, just what went right.

To be more clear, it should probably display something like:

PLAYER SEARCH: SHANKLAND (OK!)
PLAYER SEARCH: AIN <ERROR: NO SUCH PLAYER>

Duly noted.

Jan-03-15  zanzibar: <chessgames> yes, something along those lines would be an improvement.

Thanks.

Jan-04-15  FairyPromotion: Dear <chessgames.com>,

May I ask you to upload two games from the previous year to the database. I'm aware of the PGN Upload Utility, but I want to candidate these games in some Game of the Year competitions on this site, and there are close deadlines to meet.

Let me thank you in advance, and also wish you a belated happy 2015!

WannaBe: I wonder how feasible/easy this feature would be:

On google search, you can enter "site: blahblah.com" and the keyword(s) would be limited to that site or sub pages.

If I want to search for a post, made by member, err, say "woof-woof" with the key word "Qxd4" on member forum or player's page "YadaYada".

Is it possible to enter: "woof-woof Qxd4 Page:YadaYada" or "woof-woof Qxd4 Page:pid=123456799" into search kibitz'n (or have an "advanced search" option)?

Or would this be (very) resource intensive?

Jan-06-15  MostlyAverageJoe: <WannaBe> While I do not know the CG infrastructure, I imagine that this should be simple to implement -- the search already supports limiting the scope to comments made by a specific user (or made by anyone but a specific user), so limiting the search to a single forum sounds very plausible.

A picturesque fact before treating his lack of judgement to PGN Upload. Worse than having rejected games, is to have the Hao123 in proxy from my PC, that nasty plague that hit me in the last few hours, I do not wish even to coarse subjects as Daniel Freeman But back to our subject.

The game is a chess below symphony with tragic end.
After a powerful attack, White is superior.
Before you find out if white can force the victory or the defense is still possible, Zukertort makes a decisive mistake.

There are probably many things that are unacceptable to you which reasonably minded sentients would be okay with.

I had not reviewed it. Usually my text reviewer accepts castling, perhaps the malware that was in my PC yesterday has caused the distortion. In any case, the version that <zanzibar> presents seems OK.
