 | | OhioChessFan: <Benzene: has it become a child that developed in a way that you could never have forseen> I'm doubtful they foresaw Kenneth Rogoff generating more kibitzing than Fischer, Carlsen, and Kramnik combined, or that there would be over 500 references to "pampered goldfish" or that Odd Lie would generate more kibiting than Topalov, or that people would write limericks on Raymond Weinstein or stories on City of Moscow or over 300 kibitzes about a game with no moves...... |

| Feb-14-15 | | Shams: Since we're chronicling site history, I have a question. Did Albert Artidiello ever sell his stake? If so, was the buyer's identity made public? |

| Feb-14-15 | | zanzibar: <CG Illegal PGN - round 2> Well, let's start with a remnant from round 1-
G Marco vs J W Baird, 1894 <(CG Illegal PGN)> which I mentioned in my blog post
https://zanchess.wordpress.com/2015... is still not fixed.
Don't believe me? Think <SCID> is too picky? Try playing the game with <CG>'s own pgn4web. * * * * *
Now, I spent a good bit of time filling out the details in the previous exposé, finding the illegal PGN for all games in <CG>'s <Tournament Index>. This time, I made a collection of *all* <CG> games (all 722395 of 'em). I hope this time I can just point out the extent of the problem with this post: https://zanchess.wordpress.com/2015... <(CG Illegal PGN - part 2)> Since <CG> now runs <SCID> (hooray!), you can replicate my procedure and use the game index to locate each game needing remedy. I estimate ~71 games need correcting. |

 | | MissScarlett: I just submitted a couple of Lasker simul games, but inadvertently duplicated the opponent <Rosenberg> (the other details are correct). Would you correct the game ending 24.a3 with <Fiszlewicz> as the opponent? |

 | | FSR: When are you going to add submitted games to the database? I have a ton of games in the pipeline, some of which have been waiting for almost a month (since January 19). |

| Feb-15-15 | | zanzibar: <RE: Chessgames history> For the first comments and first users: chessgames.com chessforum (kibitz #4288) It's interesting to see a couple of still-recognizable user names among the first. User: Sargon was actually first to make a comment, but being an employee, its semi-official. The true first commenter was <SmartyPants> User: SmartyPants (? still working?) Typical comment, re NN:
<Man this guy SUCKS!!! He almost never wins a game! But he sure does get around....> Yes: NN (kibitz #1) A chess game between two of the co-founders of <CG> can be found here: A Artidiello vs D Freeman, 2001
It was GotD on 2011-12-10 to mark the 10th anniversary of the site. |

 | | MissScarlett: I submitted a game Alekhine-Arvids Kalnins only to discover that it was already in the DB as Alekhine vs Kalnys, 1935. So he beat Alekhine twice as Black in 57 moves. |

 | | MissScarlett: Is it acceptable to submit an incomplete score, i.e., one minus some final moves? It was not unknown in olden times for games to be published with, e.g., <....and White won in a few moves>. |

 | | chessgames.com: OK, lots of questions, let address two pressing ones first: <MissScarlett: Is it acceptable to submit an incomplete score, i.e., one minus some final moves?> Sure it is. The format we like to use is to just put an ellipsis at the end like this: 40.Ke2 {...} 1-0 <FSR: When are you going to add submitted games to the database?> Sorry, we are very behind on that. |

...
<FSR: When are you going to add submitted games to the database?> Sorry, we are very behind on that.> OK, but that's not actually an answer to my question. Note that most of the games I submitted are for a player who will be POTM next month on his 100th birthday. Almost all of the rest are to complete a tournament game collection for Ljubljana 1969. |

 | | FSR: <Penguincw> Very nice. But you list two different game IDs for perfect fifth, one of which appears to be wrong: <In 12-tone equal temperament, the frequencies of the tempered perfect fifth are in the ratio (\sqrt [12]2)^7 or approximately 1.498307.> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perfe... You list the game IDs 1498307 (correct) and 1493807 (wrong). |

 | | chessgames.com: Sorry FSR, you are right, that wasn't much of an answer. I mean to say that we're going to process some of the more outstanding uploads from editors today, there are two people in front of you, then you're next in line. |

 | | chessgames.com: On the topic of Chessgames history:
<Benzol> <Well did Daniel Freeman and Lee Cummings think that Albert Artidiello was really onto something big or did they just do their old mate a favour?> That's hard to answer. Back in 2000, everything that was related to the internet was potentially huge. If somebody said "One day, the internet will revolutionize X" everybody pretty much agreed. The tricky part is figuring out how. <has it become a child that developed in a way that you could never have forseen?> That's a very good way of putting it. In the earliest days we had only a fuzzy picture of what the site might be. <Also how do Ben Babapour and Sneaky fit into the picture?> Both are friends that I met in South Florida in the mid 90s. Sneaky was doing Photoshop jobs for 20/20 Technologies at that time, so his hand is in some of the oldest graphics around here. That Dali-inspired "Kibtzer's Corner" graphic is his work, as well as the knight and coffee cup at the Café. Around that same time I also met Kevin (User: Kev, who is now helping us with puzzles of the day and managing the live game broadcasts). Five or six of us used to get together and play blitz/rapid tournaments in the days of the internet's infancy. <Shams: Since we're chronicling site history, I have a question. Did Albert Artidiello ever sell his stake? If so, was the buyer's identity made public?> He did, but as it was a private sale I don't feel comfortable discussing it. |
