 | | Annie K.: Well, that would depend on how well the cats get along, really. ;s When two cats are both active, like to play, and most importantly, like to play <with each other>, it's a pity to separate them. But if they are not good friends, separating them is ok, and then - if they are the social type - maybe find each a more compatible playmate. OK, I'll try to stay out of Daniel's business for a bit now... um, <Daniel>, help with FIDE Grand Prix Tbilisi Round 9: Jobava - Vachier-Lagrave please? See email or Bookie forum for details - Vachier-Lagrave should be the winner. |

 | | Domdaniel: <CG> Thanks for your coverage of Bunratty, won by Wesley So, And the Classic, won by Bjorn Thorfinnsson. But note that Bjorn and his IM brother Bragi often spell their surname in Icelandic, where a single letter, Thorn, stands for 'th'. It's the same letter that was once used in Old English - it looks a bit like a 'Y', which led to phrases like 'Ye Olde Shoppe'. But it's not a Y, it's Th. The Bunratty site uses Thorn in several places. Chessgames (also correctly) usually has Thorfinnsson. But the homepage Bunratty pointer has 'Yorfinnsson', which is wrong. Thanks, G/D. |

| Feb-25-15 | | zanzibar: <Domdaniel> Aha, you are a bit of a polyglot after all! * * * * *
<chessgames> can I ask if I ever submitted a bunch of games for <Subotica izt (1987)>? In other words, can your records be consulted so you could tell one way or the other if I did? And if you could, would you please tell me? |
|

 | | chessgames.com: <In other words, can your records be consulted so you could tell one way or the other if I did?> Yes. <And if you could, would you please tell me?> No, not by that name "Subotica." <Annie> No problem — payoff has been "undone". Just pay it off again. <Domdaniel> I am familiar with the thorn, but just to be clear: there's nothing on our site for us to fix? Or do we have a Yorfinnsson somewhere that you're pointing out? |
|
Feb-25-15
 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: <cg> FIDE Grand Prix Tbilisi Round 9: Pick Three also needs fixing. <thorn> On the CG front page it says <Bjorn Yuorfinnsson won this 10 player GM norm round-robin.> "Yuorfinnsson" should be Thorfinnsson. |
|
Feb-25-15
 | | Annie K.: Thanks <Switch>, I forgot that was one of the Pick Three games too. |
|
Feb-25-15
 | | Domdaniel: <CG> -- <Or do we have a Yorfinnsson somewhere that you're pointing out??> Almost. The 'u' is superfluous.
As Switch says: New Games, Bunratty Chess Classic, has "Bjorn Yuorfinnsson won this 10 player GM norm round-robin." |
|
| Feb-25-15 | | zanzibar: Thanks <chessgames>, that's what I thought from seeing what's currently on <CG>. I must have gotten side-tracked worrying about reliability of sources. You can expect a mini-deluge in the near future. I'm sure you're just quivering with anticipation! |

Feb-25-15
 | | Annie K.: Thanks, <cg> and <Switch>, business has been taken care of. ;) <zanzibar: <<Domdaniel> Aha, you are a bit of a polyglot after all!>> More than a bit, but he practices implausible deniability. :) |

| Feb-26-15 | | whiteshark: <chesgames.com> Do you have a problem with this: <"The entirety of our translation in the feature article Alekhine on Munich, 1941 has been reproduced by chessgames.com without permission, a total of 1,325 words."> posted at http://www.chesshistory.com/winter/... regarding Munich (1941) ? |
|
| Feb-26-15 | | Shams: Is there any way to know which users have tripped the PITA flag? I'm dying of curiosity, I can't lie. |
|
Feb-26-15
 | | chessgames.com: I have more than one problem with that.
(Didn't we go through virtually the same thing with a Sport Illustrated reproduction a while back?) Quoting Alekhine for the purpose of discussion is fine, but if you want to refer the reader to an entire online article, a link is all that's required. Also, the copyright status on the work is unclear. Assuming Winter obtained permission to reproduce the article himself (which is required if you intend on translating it), the translation itself represents a separate creative effort. The owner of the original copyright maintains rights over both works, to which the copyright in the translation is subordinate. However, if the article is deemed to be in the public domain (which is quite possible under a variety of circumstances) then Winter would maintain the copyright on his particular translation. In either case, permission is required from at least one party. Finally, with all respects to Winter for his tireless works, I have to question how good of a translation this particular article is. For example, the Spanish word "propaganda" is surely not best translated into English as "propaganda" due to the negative connotations that word has in modern English. I'm sure Alekhine intended what English speakers would call "advertising" or "promotion". |

 | | chessgames.com: Good news: as suggested, you can now delete your own pun submissions. For those who don't know how this works, this is the page where you can submit your puns — Pun Submission Page And this is the page where you can review puns that you've submitted (and now delete the lemons) — Pun Submission Page And voting is important too — Pun Voting Booth |

 | | Penguincw: Ooh. Thanks for the feature. Just one question:
Is it possible to "edit" a submission by deleting a submission, and then re-submitting it as something slightly different? In other words, if I delete a submission, is it possible to ever re-sumbit the game or pun again? |
|
Feb-28-15
 | | Annie K.: Kewl, thanks! I just deleted 8 of them. :D |
|
Feb-28-15
 | | Phony Benoni: <Penguincw> I just deleted a pun that had a typo, and was able to resubmit it immediately. However, it occurs to me that this feature might be abused by a person resubmitting puns they thought had been unjustly ignored. |

| Feb-28-15 | | zanzibar: I submitted this game back in November, I think:
[Event "Biel izt (FIDE 1993)"]
[Site "Biel, SUI"]
[Date "1993.??.??"]
[Round "13"]
[White "Salov, Valery"]
[Black "Gelfand, Boris"]
[WhiteChessgamesID "13983"]
[BlackChessgamesID "13847"]
[Result "1/2-1/2"]
[EventDate "1993.07.??"]
[PlyCount "21"]
[TimeControl "40/7200:20/3600:1800"]
1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.cxd5 cxd5 5.Nc3 Nc6 6.Bf4 Bf5 7.e3 e6 8.Bd3 Bxd3 9.Qxd3 Bd6 10.Bxd6 Qxd6 11.O-O 1/2-1/2 Submitted together with a few other games that were missing from <Biel izt 1993> that seem to have shown up. In fact, there is this game:
Seirawan vs Granda Zuniga, 1993
also a 12-move GM draw.
Can <CG> check it's records to tell me what happened here? Did I really submit the <Salov--Gelfand> game, and was it rejected for some reason? |
|
Feb-28-15
 | | chessgames.com: The submission was rejected because it was a "duplicate" for Kramnik vs Anand, 1993. I know it seems like a bug to reject games that are move-for-move identical with others, knowing very well that GM draws occur all the time, but believe me when I say that all of the alternatives we've explored are far worse. I just forced its inclusion. |
|
| Feb-28-15 | | zanzibar: < [...] believe me when I say that all of the alternatives we've explored are far worse.> Ouch! OK, follow-ups in the Bistro. |

 | | FSR: It's not a momentous thing, but why is Frederick Rhine shown as having 32 games, when the actual number is 33? |
|
Mar-02-15
 | | FSR: Am I correct in understanding that your current policy is not to have any game be GOTD more than once? If so, I presume that I am safe to delete puns that I have submitted for games that later became GOTD under a different pun? I have at least three of those. |
|
Mar-02-15
 | | OhioChessFan: Oddly enough, here is <FSR> record which totals up to 27: Overall record: +14 -6 =7 (64.8%)*
whic makes me think this isn't an isolated problem. |
|
Mar-02-15
 | | OhioChessFan: Looking at the 3 most recently commented player pages, 2 of them have totals that don't add up in all 3 recountings: Kenneth Rogoff had 2 of 3 total 132 but the overall record adds up to 131: Number of games in database: 132
Overall record: +38 -29 =64
page 1 of 6; games 1-25 of 132
Odd Lie was fine. But then:
Robert Fischer has the overall record with over 200 games fewer than the cited number of games: Number of games in database: 993
Overall record: +420 -86 =247
page 1 of 40; games 1-25 of 993 |

 | | Tabanus: <CG> GM Amador Rodriguez Cepedes (born 1956) has his last name spelled wrong, it should be Cespedes. FIDE has Cepedes but almost every other source has Cespedes, incl. Spanish Wikipedia, Bidmonfa, Google (Cespedes has many more hits), etc. |
