Apr-19-15  zanzibar: <<Tab> And today (when turning on) there was a "Java helper" plug-in which I was asked to enable. I did, but still 1 min. 25 seconds to load. With the pgn4web we can't see rounds and dates? Filling in tournament game dates will take some time hereafter.>

I noted that a while back. For those of us with an inclination to use pgn4web we have to view the pgn to get round/date numbers.

Life's a compromise.

I never heard of Tarrasch (the db) before. Wonder how it matches up against SCID.

You know what took the longest to load? (Or why the board don't show up for 2 minutes?)

chessgames.com: <Richard Taylor> There is always pgn4web. Surely that works for you, right?

<WannaBe> Excellent observation! The salient feature is that these URLs are actually incorrect. The graphics are located at /java/, like this: http://www.chessgames.com/java/wk.gif

Maybe if I clone that directory to also appear where it's looking for them, things will improve. It can't hurt.

chessgames.com: Of course we're running Linux, and of course I used a symbolic link. I wrote 'clone' just to not confuse the issue for those who don't concern themselves with such matters.

<Penguincw> Oh, thanks. That's always an interesting event, and it's fun to make the database player entries for the new teams.

I hope that we don't uncover that some weird misconfiguration on our end has made CVD slower for all this time, but at the same time I hope that this fix corrects the issues that some people are having.

Apr-19-15  Wayne Power: Hello Richard and all. I seem to have got Chess Viewer Delux version 2 going again but with the following recipe:

1) Windows version 7
2) Java version 8, Update 45
3) Firefox browser (Chrome is known not to support this Java). 4) Disabled AdBlock for Chessgames
5) Reloaded particular game.
6) Waited for at least 5 minutes (NB!!).

- and there it finally was!

Whether all the above steps were necessary, I couldn't say but there is my 2 cents worth.

Apr-20-15  scout118: <Chessgames.com> I strongly suggested earlier it would be best to lock down further posting on Wesley So page, at least until after the Gashimov 2 tournament. This page disparages Chessgames as a site where avid chess fans can freely exchange chess ideas.

If you use Google Translate, you will find rampant violations of at least three Chessgames' posting guidelines, mostly disguised by posting in Tagalog.

One rabble rouser provcateur in particular, a certain <Sugardom> has taken to post nothing other than outrageous, provocative, calumnious personal attacks against GM Wesley So which have absolutely no place in Chessgames and adds zero value to discussions.

It is perhaps time to ban this person.

chessgames.com: <What's the story behind your 10 years long personal vendetta against a proper ECO classification of the <Grunfeld-Indian Defence> ???>

Usually things like this are due to a missing FEN in our behemoth file which identifies openings via FEN strings. There are undoubtedly transpositions into the Gruenfeld that are unaccounted for. (I don't think that's a problem that can ever be addressed 100%. We can just feed it more FEN.)

However this isn't the case in this one instance.

After investigating, I found this case to be a out of the ordinary. It's not a missing string per se (although that Shak-MVL game did have an somewhat unusual transposition that I could imagine be easily not spotted.) There was an error with D80: it had no defined FEN whatsoever.

So in many cases where it's "obviously a Gruenfeld" it kept coming up with "West Indian Defense" because that's the generic term for this:

click for larger view

So I just updated the file to define the "Gruenfeld: General" as this

click for larger view

and also, just to catch some transpositions, a position from that Shak-MVL game:

click for larger view

It's going to take a lot of reprocessing ECO codes to get things back to normal but I started by setting it to reprocess all of E60 through E99. It's already up to E67.

That will not fix all of the misidentified Gruenfelds, but it will fix the game in question and surely some others.

Thanks for pointing that out.

I still have XP but my son cant access it with Windows 7 but I'll try some of those things. I use Chrome. Should I shut it down and use Firefox? Or try downloading Firefox?

None of the applets are working, if it persists I wont be hanging around here. It spoils it for me. I liked to play the games over (and analyse etc, say with MistyBeach, but that and none of the others work now), then suddenly none of them are supported.
