 | | Annie K.: I use pgn4web, and I like the highlighting. :) |

 | | chessgames.com: Part of me feels that it's always best to make an option for something, so people can configure the website exactly the way they want—but on the other hand we don't want 100 options on the preference page that only serve to confuse. |

 | | WannaBe: I don't use pgn4web, but playing on GK and chess.com where moves are highlighted are nice. Just my 1 cent. ChessBookie took my other cent. |

| May-12-15 | | zanzibar: I respect everybody's preferences.
I just respect my own the best, which is why I argue for an option. I realize I don't get to pick defaults, and I know my preferences are often at odds with the majority. But, I wrote my last post on general grounds before even looking at the change. I must say it's rather unintrusive, as far as most hightlighting schemes go. If there was an option I'd still turn it off though! |

 | | chessgames.com: Also in the minor-tweak department: the POTD will now automatically jump you to the proper move number, if you are using pgn4web. This is a feature we've been asked for 1000 times.
I'm working on a way to make the same thing happen in CVD. |

 | | Annie K.: <the POTD will now automatically jump you to the proper move number, if you are using pgn4web.> Yayyy!! =)
<we don't want 100 options on the preference page that only serve to confuse.> The solution might be not to put all the preferences on that single page. Possibly board options could be customized from a button somewhere next to the board, leading to a separate page just for that. I have also suggested in the past an option to toggle short/long list choice for the players pulldown menu in the homepage Advanced Search box, instead of having to go into preferences to choose... and maybe some other options could be dispersed to locations more immediately relevant to their subjects too. :) |

 | | chessgames.com: You're, right, localizing the preferences makes sense. There could be a page just for viewer-related preferences, including the light/dark colors. The tricky part is to make sure everybody sees it. I don't want it to be a page like Menu Configuration Page that's unknown to 9 out of 10 members. |
|
May-12-15
 | | Annie K.: So let's start with figuring out how to improve that too! ;) That menu is accessed from the [edit] link at the end of the top menu itself, AFAIK. Maybe that's not clear enough? Try renaming it to [edit this menu] maybe. It's longer, which is not ideal, but let's see if it helps. The other link leading to that page is in our profiles, as 'Customize enhanced menu'. I can imagine that many people may have no clue what is meant by 'enhanced'. Try renaming this one to 'Customize top menu'? :) |

 | | chessgames.com: Boy, somebody just submitted a pun that I have to add to my secret list of "puns we can never use." To the person who submitted it (you know who you are), it was hilarious, and you should be ashamed of yourself. |

<Boy, somebody just submitted a pun that I have to add to my secret list of "puns we can never use."> At least tell us the game so that we can put our fertile (but sick) imaginations to work. |
|
| May-13-15 | | fgh: <chessgames.com>: this may not be the best place to ask, but could we please get a new photo at Fabiano Caruana? |

 | | chessgames.com: The game was A Braun vs Yifan Hou, 2008. Please don't post your guesses here, but if you can think of a G-rated pun I'm all ears. |

< Please don't post your guesses here> Of course not. Wouldn't think of it. |
|
| May-13-15 | | Abdel Irada: G-Rated (if obscure) Pun: <Braun Won, After All> (I believe Yifan Hou's name translates as "one-all after," or, in the Chinese name order, "after one-all.") Of course, no one would get it.... :-S

< chessgames.com: <New photo at Fabiano Caruana?> Good idea, I think the #1 USA player deserves it. :-) > Speaking of Caruana, kinda late now, but how about broadcasting some games from the FIDE Grand Prix. First game is Caruana-Dominguez. :) |
|
| May-14-15 | | WinKing: I like that idea <Penguincw>. How about it chessgames? Anybody down there get up before 6:00 am? :) Let's celebrate Caruana being on Team U.S.A. now. |

 | | chessgames.com: <kinda late now> Never too late! Caruana vs L Dominguez, 2015, open to everybody. <I believe Yifan Hou's name translates as "one-all after," or, in the Chinese name order, "after one-all."> That's interesting. <Braun Eyed Girl> That's not bad. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Question for <CG> - is there a possibility of getting some meaningful sorting of tournament games?> There are a lot of areas of improvement we can make with sorting. However, I thought that tournaments were the one area where we sort robustly. <I'd like to see the games sorted by round, e.g. Buenos Aires (1970)/Robert James Fischer> I'm confused--those are sorted perfectly by round. (Maybe somebody added the date information after your post?) In any case, you are right that if the date is known but the rounds are known, it won't sort properly. In fact it won't sort at all, except by the year. I am contemplating a kind of compound field the incorporates the date (if known), and the tournament (even if the date is unknown), and the round number, so that every game can have an integer that represents its proper order in a sequence. I think that would work better than simply sorting on date, especially in cases where we have only partial information. If nothing else, that would force it to group like tournaments together in general searches. |

In EnterCard Scandinavian Masters Tournament, Sjur Agdestein is not playing but is listed for one game. Simen Agdestein is playing. Apparently something is confusing the software. |

 | | Richard Taylor: < chessgames.com: By the way, about that New Zealand championship, the PGN from the site was rather odd but we can use it with some serious cleaning-up. It's the type of PGN that reports clock-times every single move and has another anomalies. Sorry for the delay.> You mean the Seniors also. I think the system they are using is not good. The old one seemed to work. During the NZ Seniors I could only see two games. They did try to send out all games. The PNGs etc didn't come through either. It is stupid for a system to report too much data, although a big significance in games is of course the time. But it needs to be done so it is easy to access. But then I just play chess and don't get involved in admin or anything as I'm no good at all that. Rhetorical comment, I can see you have a lot on. |
