  chessgames.com: Thanks, Annie.

How does that site work? I suppose some fan uploaded that on their own, transcribing the moves by hand from ChessArena? It would explain the horrible PGN quality. (No Event tag, Site tag empty, Round "?"...)

Let's hope they got the moves right. For now it's the best we've got.

Annie K.: No idea - I got there from the link above the board at http://wesleyso.com/chess-links/. So it has *some* recommendation. :)

offramp: Here is something that I thought could be interesting, if not here at cg.com that at some other site.

How about a stat on the player page of current active players of "Last 100 games" and possibly "Best 100 games"?

For example, Loek van Wely could have this stat:

"Overall record: +739 -495 =846 (55.9%)
Last 100 games: +59 -26 =15 (66.5%)
Based on games in the database; may be incomplete."

That isn't hard to figure out, but I think the "Best 100 games" idea would need an algorithm.

The idea would be to present a player's current form compared to his overall form.

Jun-14-15  fgh: <chessgames.com>, could you please clean up the page So - Navara Match (2015)? It is being derailed by an irrelevant discussion about bans, copyrights, and the Wesley So page. Thank you.

chessgames.com: <fgh> Talking about Wesley So during a Wesley So match isn't the worst thing that could happen. If there are some particular posts that you think cross the line feel free to use the Whistle.

<offramp> Not a bad idea.

<9.2.1: Tag: EventDate

This uses a date value, similar to the Date tag field, that gives the starting date of the Event.>

http://www.saremba.de/chessgml/stan...

It's the last part of how a tournament is defined in PGN-speak, together with Event and Site tags.

(A game's Date may be unknown to the exact day, while the EventDate tag isn't, for example)

Annie K.: <zanz> thanks. So it just needs one value, the event starting date, not the ending date as well. Would that be the official tournament opening date (usually one day before Round 1, at least in many contemporary tourneys that I've noted), or the Round 1 date? And why wasn't it filled in in the current example (the So-Navara match)? :)

Also, do I ask too many questions?

How about now? ;p

Jun-14-15  zanzibar: If anybody should ask if they ask too many questions... that'll be me.

Actually I wish the PGN standard allowed the EventDate to be a "bracket" date, i.e. a start-finish combo.

Maybe <gauer> and I will be discussing this very point when we draft the new PGN standard!

As for the exact details on the starting date - it's not clear what the consensus is.

I like using the Opening Day date, which often appears on the tournament books and ad works for the tournament. I like to know when the players are on-site, which the earlier date generally tells.

On the other hand, often the R1 date is used. And sometimes that's the only published info.

It's usually only one day difference whichever you use.

When I double check the EventDate from the game dates, I don't flag it as an error if the EventDate is just a few days before the R1 game Date.

However, if the EventDate is after the R1 data, it suggests some review and correction is needed.

Well, you did ask the questions!

Jun-14-15  zanzibar: Oh, <Why wasn't it filled in?>

The EventDate is the oft neglected orphan child of the PGN tags.

Most all software compensate with the game Date when the EventDate is missing.

And because of this the EventDate is often overlooked, and misunderstood.

(Actually, the PGN standard should have introduced an EventSite tag to parallel the EventDate tag. Then the Site tag would apply to a particular game's actual location. )

Annie K.: <EventSite> Ooh, that would be nice. Everybody knows stuff like Morelia-Linares, but for example, the two days of playing in Rotterdam and The Hague in this year's Tata Steel will probably be forgotten much more easily.

Thanks for the explanations, appreciated. :)
