| Nov-30-15 | | zanzibar: <chessgames.com: <Can you change all Scarborough HUN site tags into Scarborough ENG please?> No problem. I only wonder, where did "Scarborough HUN" come from in the first place?> I think I know where the Hun comes from! It's a term of affection, common in Scarborough... http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUser... |

 | | chessgames.com: I see: somewhere, somebody asked "Where did that tournament take place?" and they were told, "Scarborough, Hun!" <Domdaniel: There are 100 <stotinki> in a Ronen Lev. What is 100 <offramp>s, please?> I'm sorry I don't understand. I have a feeling your wit has flown over my head. <7th London Chess Classic 2015 Tournament> We'll get a discussion page up shortly. |

 | | Annie K.: <I see: somewhere, somebody asked "Where did that tournament take place?" and they were told, "Scarborough, Hun!"> Either that or we Magyars were bored one afternoon and decided to annex it. Nobody objected (we probably didn't explain it in English), so we consider it a done deal. ;p |

| Dec-01-15 | | Paint My Dragon: Be <Gyorn>. I am not normally <Eger> to be <Erd> on such matters, but if you think you can annex Scarborough, you have seriously <Miskolc>ulated. No <Szeged> warning! Whoops, I suspect I may have negated all the good work recently done on Hungarian pronunciation. |
|
Dec-01-15
 | | Annie K.: Heh... ok, I'll trade you Miskolc for it, if you insist. But first you have to learn that it's pronounced Mish-koltz ('mish' as in 'mishmash', and 'koltz' rhymes with 'colts'). :) <cg> Sorry, I guess you'll have to relabel all Miskolc games as 'Miskolc, ENG' now... ;) |

| Dec-01-15 | | Paint My Dragon: <Annie K> That's a generous offer. I contacted the Foreign Office and they were delighted. Prepare yourself for the joy of fish and chips followed by a donkey ride! |

<For a long time I used a Mac Air to access CG through a couple of OSs, again without a problem. The last OS I used with the Air was probably Snow Leopard or Mavericks, though the Air is updated with El Capitan.> I will wait for the Los Muchachos update.
<If you think it would help, I can log into CG with the Air with the latest OS and report back.> I appreciate the offer, but no need in light of this clarification by <WannaBe: <thegoodanarchist> & <Robed.Bishop> The initial problem as reported by <keypusher>:chessgames.com chessforum

you can see from Sept. 30th, he posted the OS and I wasn't able to progress further with reproduction of his issue. (I only have iPad, no MacBook) He is not freezing when viewing/accessing CG, but when he runs analysis on games.> Thank you! Since I download PGN files to analyze with Shredder, and have no issues, I think I have nothing to worry about. |

 | | chessgames.com: <MarkFinan> My apologies for not answering your question; in the off-topic merriment things can slip by me. You wrote: <Just a question about forum bios. Ive just tried adding to mine and whenever I press 'Update profile' then go back to my profile, he hasn't added what I typed out, it's deleted about 300 words as well.> If your profile is near its maximum allowable size then it's no surprise that it fails to add addendums, but the part that confuses me is that it truncates something at the end. I'm not completely baffled; I have some ideas--but it sounds like there might be a bug in the text-to-HTML-to-truncation procedure. It could be that it's generating invalid HTML in your profile that hides some text from view. There are other explanations as well. <How many characters can our bios have?> That's not an easy question to answer because the limit is on the HTML characters, not just the ones you type. For example (Hello!)
is eight characters long, but
<Hello!>
is dozens of characters long, because it invokes HTML font/color tags. The workaround for your purposes right now is just to make you bio shorter. It's a known bug that when you brush up against the limit, weird things happen. And by making it shorter, you don't necessarily have to cut out your words, removing <HTML Tr♗çkš> can make the total size much smaller without sacrificing content. A proper solution would be to enforce a limit on the size of what you type and allow the HTML to be unlimited. There are technical issues with that so it's a matter well have to revisit in the future. <On a related subject> Who would enjoy and/or use a method to italicize text? I'm *really* getting tired of using asterisks as a substitute. |
