chessgames.com: <<Fusilli> The highest rating is only shown if it's not the same as the last FIDE rating.> I'm continually amazed at how SQ knows more about the code that I do. He's absolutely right.

<Eljanov's current FIDE rating is actually 2760, but CG still gives his December rating.> What?! I processed the rating file on January 2nd, but I see now some cock-up had us process the December file for a second time. I'd correct this now, but I might as well wait until tomorrow since a new file is coming out.

offramp: <zanzibar: I have to say that I almost never use the pulldown menu. I wonder how many people regularly do use it?>

I use it for tricky names. So (or any very short name), Huebner (or any name with an umlaut), Polu, Kortschnoj, Nezh... quite a few others.

offramp: <chessgames.com> Any plans to have a Facebook link on each page, so that if we see a good game we can share it urbi et orbi?

  Annie K.: <Facebook link on each page>

For the record (again), I am opposed. :)

If you want to discuss games with your friends, bring them here.

It would not be a move in a good direction for <cg> to facilitate taking discussion that would be better here to Facebook.

Jan-30-16  morfishine: <CG> BTW: Thanks, Of course, I've seen the 'Blow the Whistle' prompt below the kbitz box, but slow old me, didn't put 2 & 2 together to actually use the link

And as <Fusilli> states, we don't want do overdo it, but I gotta ask, "There's a member who routinely calls people ignoramus or dummy or dim-wit. Usually, I just laugh at these, but I got suspended for the mild 'obnoxious doofus' comment, which seems much less attacking than 'ignoramus', so where do we draw the line on whats actually attacking?"

Thanks, just trying to make things better

Jan-31-16  morfishine: Yes <offramp> but we must be precise: Are we talking about the renowned Eduard Dyckhoff or the lesser known R Dyckhoff?

  chessgames.com: Ms Scarlett,

Duly noted.

Our homepage reads Caleta ENG because we were just aping the contents of the official PGN. I imagine this designation must appear as ludicrous to many as "San Juan USA" would appear to an American.

We have a tool which can turn all of these games into your suggested "Caleta Hotel, Catalan Bay GIB" (or at least "Catalan Bay GIB") in one fell swoop — but we have to wait for the event to be complete as the PGN keeps flowing in. Thanks.

Feb-02-16  zanzibar: <offramp> puts the <sui> in <generis>!
Feb-02-16  zanzibar: RE: GIB

That is a good ISO country code, but it's not on our page:

FIDE Country Codes

If used, it should be added.

Note however, no FIDE player has that code for their FIDE federation (leastwise, not in my snapshot).

I checked a few of the members here:

http://calpechess.ning.com/profiles...

They're either ENG or ESP.

chessgames.com: <If used, it should be added.> Agreed, and we just did. I also added it to the generic country pulldown, even though, as you noted, FIDE doesn't use it to designate players origins.

I am unclear on the sovereignty of Gibraltar so perhaps to FIDE it truly makes good sense to lump those players into other groups, but it doesn't harm us to use the code where we see fit.

Feb-03-16  zanzibar: <chessgames> best maybe not to go there:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dispu...

The number of chess players is probably too small to maintain a federation of their own, when aligning with the English Federation is so easy.

Plus, there are probably political motivations to remaining aligned. Consider:

<In a referendum in 2002 the people of Gibraltar soundly rejected a joint sovereignty proposal on which Spain and the United Kingdom were said to have reached "broad agreement".>

Feb-04-16  gauer: Team White vs Team Black, 2015 (kibitz #3195) (shows "...reply 3195" (in my case, with an empty ignore file...) for the white team as part of the blue URL display - according to the display that zanzibar suggested that we might see as a way to show a common ref link). What happens, though, to the reply#, after the game comments get merged (does the # change if a user builds an ignore list or gets to see hidden forum messages)?

US Championship (group B play-off) (2011) is a playoff link to a tid voted in which previously had a different tid# (85467 vs US Championship (Group B Playoff) (2011) (73628)). I had a playoff cid collection for a 2-game 2014 US championship playoff. But it probably doesn't need its own kibitzer corner section (much as in the Millionaire Chess (2015) set-up). I added a brief explanation the other day, but didn't have much extra time (currently moving...) yet to elaborate within the intro.

Feb-05-16  DanLanglois: no discussion of game here, <gauer>. Please.

MissScarlett: Further to the discussion here (Biographer Bistro), do we get this feature, or not? In addition to its primary purpose, it would have the benefit of letting us know what others are working on, thereby possibly eliciting offers of assistance or avoiding duplication of effort.

chessgames.com: <MissScarlett> I've contemplated making the feature for CG Editors only, but the problem there is that many biographers "in spirit" are technically not CG editors.

So plan "B" is to make it an intentionally hard to find feature that the biographers will know how to get there, but the general CG audience will be blind to it.

Feb-06-16  morfishine: <Danlanglois> Good point; I thought <gauer> was referring to an old game, but this one's still progress

chessgames.com: <gauer> When you use a "permalink" like chessgames.com chessforum (kibitz #20029) it works forever and always. That is reply 20029 even if later replies 20028 or 20031 are deleted. Furthermore, ignore-lists are irrelevant.

One wrinkle though: for technical reasons it doesn't work in Team Games, at least not until the game is over. We'll try to fix that.

MissScarlett: < but the general CG audience will be blind to it.>

Why do you think they'd be interested in it? Hundreds of thousands of games are at their fingertips, so what would be the attraction of seeking out the prospect of the mostly obscure games that make up game submissions?

Feb-07-16  gauer: The only main reason that I was wondering about the 2011 playoff is that in US Championship (Group B) (2011) (kibitz #113) , the link within points to the old tid number (is there a way to report a kibitzing merge request on a tid error correction slip)?

Also, Biographer Bistro (kibitz #12905) discussion of some big tournaments which we know would probably be incomplete and large (in terms of # of games), then would you suppose that such a solution might be an improved way to handle a list-of-names or leaderboard report? Sometimes, a player wouldn't have any/all games (in the former case, we can list players with 0 games in that way who did play...) add up to the number of rounds, if he received a bye or didn't submit a carbon-copy scoresheet.

Does the leader-board editor on a tid page allow for adding in different result values of an unforced or forced bye (and maybe also players with 0 downloadable games, but a proper score report)?

WannaBe: Java 8 update 73 confirmed. (Sorry <chancho> can't help you with that little known browser), try using Internet Explorer with Java to use CVD.
Feb-07-16  YouRang: I just learned an unpleasant user interface thing:

There is a "Leave a comment" box at the bottom of every forum page. I can type a lengthy message there, but if I accidentally bump the Esc key, *POOF* it's all gone! Right-clicking and selecting "Undo" doesn't bring it back either.

No warning to say "are you sure you want to permanently destroy your work?" either. I thought those kinds of destructive user-interface gotchas were banned decades ago.

offramp: Any chance of a new picture of Hikaru Nakamura? The current one makes him look very young. It also has that Canadian flag in the foreground, and because Nakamura is wearing red it's a little misleading.
