 | | chessgames.com: Whew! That's what you call an impromptu test of the emergency backup system. Sorry for the down-time; I thought it best if the site was offline while working on something as delicate as the User table. Everything should be just fine now. Please let me know if you notice otherwise. |

I thought this would make a good Friday/Saturday puzzle. It is hard for me to gauge.A Smith vs S Belouadah, 2016, 37...? click for larger view
Black played 37...Re3. He follows this up with 38...Rxb1. White gets a new queen but is checkmated. Can you see it? Perhaps it was just me who found it surprising. |

 | | chessgames.com: <offramp> I find that pretty as well. I was thinking the rooks would easily hold but I wasn't expecting a forced mate. Speaking of forced mates somebody else just submitted this lovely: S Friedman vs N Thornblom, 1973 click for larger viewBlack to play. |

| Sep-15-16 | | User not found: Well I could see the aim is to stop the e pawn giving whites king an escape square (Nh3 is threatening a mate in 1) but I didn't see that one coming! click for larger viewJust played this game and I'm happy to say I found it by chance, but white to mate in 4 |

| Sep-16-16 | | zanzibar: <MillBase> has the game as well. http://katar.weebly.com/blog/millba... Too bad the position didn't make it into ChessTempo as a problem though. |

 | | Annie K.: I prefer Emrald, aka Chess Tactics Server (http://chess.emrald.net/) over ChessTempo, myself. It's less customizable and demands speed, but I think that when training for instant pattern recognition, that's an advantage. :) |
|
| Sep-16-16 | | zanzibar: <Annie> Hmmm, interesting. You and I are different people obviously. I'll have to give emrald another go though.
I'm curious - have you ever tried <CT> blitz? |
|
Sep-16-16
 | | Annie K.: I don't play there, only tried the site's tactics training a while back. I already have plenty of other playing sites. :) |

 | | chessgames.com: <OhioChessFan: Some off the rails problems here> Wow, thanks. I hope you don't mind if I let the fire run its course a little longer. Maybe it can run out of fuel before I toss the final water on it. |

 | | HeMateMe: I find political commentary all over the tournament pages here, in addition to mine. Just look at the pages for the recent Olympiad. A lot of the chat has nothing to do with the game of chess itself. |

 | | chessgames.com: <HeMateMe: I find political commentary all over the tournament pages here, in addition to mine.> We do too, so as an experiment we tried handing out 12-24 hour wrist-slaps for people who were stoking the flames. Sorry if you got caught up in that, but it may be for a greater good; we will see. |

 | | chessgames.com: We've added a small feature; hopefully somebody will find good use for it. We call it by two names: <Child-Friendly Mode> a.k.a. <Quiet Mode>. It's a new setting on your Preferences Page. While in "Quiet Mode" you will not see any kibitzing, nor will you be able to participate in it. Your chessforum will be temporarily disabled, and you won't see anybody else's chessforum. Note that this option is not confidential: it will display on your profile page that your are in Quiet Mode and you cannot see kibitzes. The main intention was to allow an adult supervise a young child to use Chessgames, but there are numerous other reasons why you might want to enable this mode that have nothing to do with children, so we also call it "Quiet Mode." Maybe it's a way to tell your Chessgames friends that you're taking time away from the site. Or perhaps your mobile plan charges you by the megabyte, and you switch to Quiet Mode to safe bandwidth. Whatever the reason, you now can flip off kibitzing like turning off the lights, if you so desire. More info at Chessgames Help (What is Child-Friendly Mode?) |

<OhioChessFan: Sounds good. Now, can you create an off/on switch for my ignore list?> More useful would be an off switch for the people *on* my ignore list. :-D ∞ |
