 | | Domdaniel: Back at the turn of the century, I was watching Kasparov vs Kramnik online via a dial-up modem, and ... ... Hold on, the page I've been waiting for has finally loaded ... ... Wow! Could Vlad really beat Garry? Is this Berlin thing sound? |

Can members suggest games for puzzle of the day?
if so, how?
I assume that you use significant jumps in position evaluation as a criteria; so one doesn't need to indicate the specific move. (nor the puzzle day!) |

 | | chessgames.com: <heuristic: <chessgames> Can members suggest games for puzzle of the day? if so, how?> You can just make a post that it would make a good puzzle and
User: Kev actually uses the Search Kibitzing to find ideas that way, so it *might* be uncovered one day and used. A more effective method would be to email it to me and I'll pass it on. Some people post suggestions here, but I don't like that much, because we like it to be a secret until the day arrives. <I assume that you use significant jumps in position evaluation as a criteria; so one doesn't need to indicate the specific move. (nor the difficulty-level!)> Well, Kevin double-checks for duals or refutations, and the difficulty-level is something that we just estimate based on how hard it took for us to see it, or if we didn't see it, how hard we think it should be. The exact day is always hazy because we give points for "prettiness" — e.g., a garden-variety queen-sac/corridor-mate would be a Monday but if there was something snazzy about it, it might make Tuesday or even Wednesday, as was the case with H Prokopp vs H Scholz, 1996. |

| Oct-16-16 | | heuristic: <chessgames: puzzle> thanks. - what phrases should be used for a regex search hit? - wow, I didn't realize it was a manual effort! |
|
Oct-17-16
 | | chessgames.com: Oh yes it's quite manual; finding suitable puzzles is a hard job. <what phrases should be used for a regex search hit> Kevin would know better than I. The obvious approach would be to look up something like "Tuesday puzzle" but then you're going to get a lot of results of games already used.
One of the tricks is to name two days of the week, e.g. search for "Monday Tuesday puzzle" — that way you get posts like <This would make a good Monday or Tuesday puzzle> and not <This was one of the harder Tuesday puzzles.> The computer doesn't have the final say, BTW. Sometimes a computer will apparently "bust" a position but upon closer inspection we decided it's still an excellent puzzle with only one correct answer. A few months ago there was a classic case of that kind of thing—more than a few people declared we had made a mistake when in fact we analyzed it for over an hour (with Houdini's help) and gave it our stamp of approval. |

| Oct-18-16 | | zanzibar: <chessgames> nice improvement to be able to search on the shorter names - even if the number of hits might be unhandably large. (Is unhandably a word? My spellchecker thinks not - but humans get the last word, at least at the moment.) For the record, in case some people don't know:
One can use the <CG> pid (player ID) directly in the searches - which allows exact precision if you know the magic number, aka pid. If you don't know the ID, this link is often very handy: Player Directory
An alphabetically sorted list of most players(*). Which shows that <CG> can use collation format. (*) Is it still true that not all players on <CG> show up on this list? |
|
Oct-18-16
 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: The Player Directory is not a "list of most players"; only about 13% of all players in the Chessgames database appear in the Player Directory. http://www.chessgames.com/playerlis... lists all players and is ideal for looking up player IDs. |
|
| Oct-18-16 | | crawfb5: Yes, the player list is comprehensive, but it is sorted by pid, not name, so unless one copies it and does a sort or search, it will not be as easy to use as the partial player directory. |
|
Oct-18-16
 | | Annie K.: Why copy it? Just do a browser string search (usually activated with Ctrl+F). :) |

HELP! When I tried to make a post a gigantic swirl of revolving blue balls came on my screen. Is this part of the "New World Order" brah.
Should I be worried? |

<CeeGee>
<Oh yes it's quite manual; finding suitable puzzles is a hard job.> Are you suggesting this is now a form of manual labor? That's unusual for a chess website. Daring, though. Good luck with the New World Order, Eseh. |

So I guess our old "strategy" of posting the name of a city after making an obscene post won't work any more. We used to do this:
1st post <jessicafischerqueen: (obscene comment)> 2nd post <jessicafischerquee: "Poughkeepsie"> We reckoned this hid our tracks. But no more! I applaud your vigor, sir. |

<The Honorable Member from Ohio> <They are never better, under any circumstances.> Well I've been trying to figure out a way to post such that my messages never actually appear, so that I can watch the blue balls dance continuously. Possibly this could be a sleep aid that engenders good dreams. |
