| Nov-01-16 | | YouRang: The idea of copyrighting a chess match is certainly interesting and complicated. Is it really the chess moves that are being copyrighted, or the broadcast of the chess moves? I know that major televised sporting events usually have a disclaimer to wit <Any use of this telecast or any other accounts of the game without the XYZ's consent is prohibited> (where XYZ is the governing organization of the sport, e.g. NFL). |

| Nov-02-16 | | YouRang: For those trying unsuccessfully to click on the link <Tabanus> provided, try this: http://www.chesshistory.com/winter/... I would expect that chess games are not copyrightable, which is why I asked if it were the <broadcast of the games> that was Agon was seeking to copyright (similar to the telecast of NFL games). But I think even that is not applicable to chess, since the "broadcast" is merely chess moves, without any added original content (e.g. annotations). It's basically broadcasting facts -- and facts are not copyrightable. |

| Nov-03-16 | | zanzibar: <Ironically, upwards of 100 per cent of the creators of any art that ever sees the light of day sell their copyright to a gigantic management company.> This is a little too extreme a statement to not comment... 100% is far too high a figure to claim. And many artists / musicians / writers / ... / etc retain the copyright to their material. (The old days of selling the entire rights to a piece of creative work are largely in the past). http://www.usu.edu/copyrightatusu/a... https://www.publicknowledge.org/new... Even BMI has a page about self-publishing:
http://www.bmi.com/news/entry/how_t... (Can you imagine Elvis Presley doing a better version of "I will always love you" than Whitney Houston? See the following link to see the relevance: https://www.sitepoint.com/retaining...) This isn't a recent trend, either. Coltrane published much of his own music himself, in affiliation with BMI, under the name of Jowcol. Doing so, his wife, and now his son, retain rights to all his original works. http://www.johncoltrane.com/jowcol....
On the other hand, look at how much Coltrane's sidemen earned recording (and basically contributing) to "A Love Supreme"(*). Double-scale, sure, but a one-time payment for their creative contributions. So may <JFQ>'s original station is largely true, in a slightly different context. (*) See Kahn's book. |

 | | chessgames.com: The crux of the decision, in my opinion, is this tiny part: <information about the chess moves is in the public domain and is not protected by law;> I think a much better analogy than music or sports would be mathematics, as the law treats chess and math more-or-less equally. When Andrew Wiles proved Fermat's Last Theorem after going unsolved for centuries, he surely furthered his career, but he can't actually copyright his proof or prevent others from republishing it. As it should be. Facts are free to all. We may pay people to present them, organize them, comment on them, etc., but the truths themselves are owned by no one. |

 | | Domdaniel: I like the maths analogy, but it's not perfect. Chess is unusual among sporting or artistic practices, in that a codified method of recording a game/performance exists, and this score allows anyone to fully reconstruct every significant aspect of the game/performance.
An orchestral symphony or a dance performance can be recorded in textual (non-electronic) form, but this score is not as complete or as satisfying as the original. |

| Nov-04-16 | | technical draw: Dear chessgames: I usually go on site through my mac using the Safari browser. However I have picked up a malware call <turbo mac>. In trying to get rid of this bothersome malware I accidently logged out of chessgames.com.
Now I can't log back in on Safari because, since I have never logged out, I can't remember my password. The malware prevents me from recovering my password using the conventional chessgames method. If it's possible I would like you to send my password to goodchessactor@gmail.com since I prefer the safari layout better than the firefox browser which I am using now. Any additional information will be well receive. Also if any other member has had problems with turbomac malware please let me know if you know how to remove it. Thanks in advance. (PS This is not a joke!) |

| Nov-05-16 | | technical draw: <chessgames.com.> I got your email and I am back up on Safari. Thanks a load! <Alien Math> I will try your suggestions as soon as I wake up. I've been up all night and I'm afraid of making mistakes. Thanks again. |

| Nov-05-16 | | technical draw: My son usually handles my computer problems since he is the chief engineer for Sprint. But he recently took two continuos vacation, one to Japan and one to Colombia and is overloaded with work. BTW my son went to Japan and Colombia and I didn't even get a lousy t-shirt! |
|
| Nov-05-16 | | technical draw: Thanks <Alien>. I did all those things and nothing works. Apparently that adware is well hidden somewhere and I can't find it. I have to disable my adblock application because it tries to stop the adware and a fight ensues. I'll just let it go since it's just bothersome on some sites and really bad on other sites. When my son recovers he'll come and fix it. (It's his Mac anyway!) |
|
| Nov-05-16 | | Alien Math: <technical draw> There is a download remover for TurboMac https://www.pcrisk.com/removal-guid... unsure how that would conflict with any adblock applications you have, is worth a try |

|
| Nov-05-16 | | technical draw: <Alien Math> Thanks for your help. The adware is more of a nuisance than a real threat so I'll just wait for my son to check it out since I might make it worse trying to fix it. <OCF> You might have to revise your probability statement.. |

 | | OhioChessFan: Wish list:
1. Access to a listing of bios I've worked on.
2. Access to a searchable listing of bios by user names they've worked on. 3. Search function for player names by first few letters, eg, Nim* 4. Search function of keywords in forum headers. |
|
Nov-07-16
 | | chessgames.com: That's a good wish list and I think I might be able to help you with the first two very rapidly. You know how the link on the new CG editor "badge" takes you to the Bistro? Instead it should take you to a page which performs that very search: shows you what they've been editing. |
