| Dec-29-16 | | zanzibar: Here's another Santa wish I forgot to make (or maybe made too early in the year)? Can <CG> please rename the player photos to allow name corrections *not* to break bio photo links? I might suggest something like glob searching
< <pid>_<0>_<descrip>.jpg <<>>> (or .gif/.png or whatever) for the master photograph? The code would allow the "descrip" part to be anything, which would allow human info content if desired. The _<0>_ part anticipates another Santa wish, allowing <CG> to have a photo gallery for a given player (the _<0>_ photo always being the default bio pic). This proposed scheme has the benefit of allowing a program to automatically rename the current crop of <descrip.jpg> files, simply by prepending the <pid> part onto the current name(*). This way, <CG> would hereafter never drop a bio pic waiting for the <descrip> part to be updated. Which is a feature I think we've all previously agreed would be useful. Recent good activity in the Bistro have once again exposed this unfortunate side-effect. (*) Of course, you could put the descriptive name first, for sorting purposes. That is, if <CG> were to use the collating format for player names (which is itself a "good idea"). |

 | | OhioChessFan: A couple wishes on edits:
1. Let me sign out of cg.c to remove my half hour hold of a bio. 2. Once I am signed into a bio, don't reset the half hour clock the next time I update. |
|
Dec-29-16
 | | chessgames.com: <please rename the player photos to allow name corrections *not* to break bio photo links?> Yes, we're going to do that in bulk "one day." They should have been named via PID in the first place. For some reason, years ago, I figured it would be more likely for a player's PID to change than their name to change. Silly me. <another Santa wish, allowing <CG> to have a photo gallery for a given player> Ah, more than one photo for a single player. Not a bad idea, but it would be only become truly useful if members (perhaps certain trusted members) had the ability to upload directly to the server. The current practice of emailing me graphics personally and have me upload them by hand is highly inefficient, you know first-hand. <1. Let me sign out of cg.c to remove my half hour hold of a bio.> Not a bad idea, but equally plausible is just a button that says "release hold." Are we actually running into problems with the hold-times or are you just being a polite and concerned chessgames citizen? <2. Once I am signed into a bio, don't reset the half hour clock the next time I update.> Ummm... when should it reset, then? |
|
Dec-29-16
 | | OhioChessFan: 1. Being polite. There's times I know other people want access to a bio and I want to get out of the way. 2. Not at all. Give me 30 minutes to work. Surely that's enough. The release hold idea would render this moot anyway. |

Dec-29-16
 | | chessgames.com: Oh I see: if the timer is not set, you set it. But if it's already set, you just let it tick down. But that would also mean if you worked on a page for 60 minutes there would be a brief period around the 30 minute mark where you'd be vulnerable to other editors swooping in and making collision-edits, precisely the reason why we have the timer in the first place. |
|
| Dec-29-16 | | zanzibar: Thanks for the reply <chessgames>. Yes, just using the <pid>, and eliminating the <descrip> altogether would probably be best. (Or would it? Using Explorer to view the files, it might be nice to see the player name.) One other feature to keep in mind, is that a submitted photograph should also include a submitted caption. Having a gallery of photos would certainly be of interest to many users - and would allow <CG> to keep old profile pictures available when updating player photos over the years. |
|
Dec-30-16
 | | OhioChessFan: You still need to pull down 19 years from my account. |

Dec-30-16
 | | Tabanus: <waiting for the <descrip> part to be updated.> If that waiting is for days or weeks, and not months or years, I see no big problem. But I think z's suggestion looks good. Carve it into the pid! CG, best wishes for 2017. Hopefully we'll see no major meltdowns. My Santa wishes (although I know SC is busy) are 1) more writing biographers, and 2) pictures to/of/for TI matches and tournaments. And why not games, too. |

 | | tpstar: <Hopefully we'll see no major meltdowns> Do you mean the Historian who sabotaged a biography to get attention, or the Historian who threatened Vandals with an ax, or the Historian who used multiple accounts to vote down someone's work product out of spite? Seasons Greetings to juniors, students, and Vandals around the world. |
|
| Dec-30-16 | | TheFocus: <or the Historian who used multiple accounts to vote down someone's work product out of spite?> I hope that person is no longer an editor. |
|
| Dec-30-16 | | zanzibar: Well, I've always thought it was a good American quality to give people second chances. Seems <CG> does too. I think both of these cases have been properly handled, the recognition of the breech, determination of responsibility with just and measured consequences meted out. And the most important component, a recognition of wrong steps. So I welcome both back, though I'm just one voice. Still, we know a great deal of productive input is due to at least one of the individuals since their return. |
|
| Dec-30-16 | | TheFocus: The only crime I committed to get stripped of my editorship was to delete my own collections; but then again, the Admins here treat me worst than they do others. Case in point, Daniel recently accused me of doing something I didn't. How much time did he have to spend to find out I wasn't the culprit? About five minutes once he got off his butt and checked instead of accusing me. That was very unclassy, Daniel. |
|
| Dec-31-16 | | zanzibar: <TheFocus> yes, I still don't know the whole history there, but I remember the last go round - when Daniel apologized to you. If it matters, I'd advocate for you to be an editor, especially given all your previous contributions. But I don't make that call. Anyways, I'm pretty sure even non-editors can make some small contribution - if they aren't too busy writing books, that is. |
|
Dec-31-16
 | | chessgames.com: I see no reason to open old wounds. I love all of you people, and I believe that this is important work, or I wouldn't be doing this. Let's start 2017 off on the right foot.
Happy New Years! |
