  OhioChessFan: <* Overall winning percentage = (wins+draws/2) / total games in the database. >

How important is that? I think it's rather ugly so prominently displayed on every single player page. Anyone who was remotely interested in the matter would know that equation anyway. It looks to my eyes especially bad when followed by <1 exhibition game, blitz/rapid, odds game, etc. is excluded from> just about to stick the player pic in the ear, and then "this statistic." a 2 word semi-orphan on the next line. At a bare minimum, how about formatting the * to be directly beneath the "O" in "Overall" instead of a bit to the right.

  WannaBe: <CG.com> Can we get Green spinning balls for St. Pats Day, Orange for Halloween, Red/Green for Christmas, and Red/White/Blue for July 4th? Thanks.

  chessgames.com: Cute idea, WannaBe.
Feb-04-17  YouRang: <chessgames.com: As an added treat, you get a chess aphorism and just barely enough time to read it :-)>

I like the little "chess quotes while you wait" idea, but I think you should have more of them. I've seen the "hardest game to win is a won game" quote several times already.

You are welcome to use some of mine:

<The hardest game to win is a lost game>

and

<When you find a losing move, look for a better one>

Feb-04-17  YouRang: Re: <Spinning balls and chess quotes during wait>

It reminds of a story I read about the owner of an office building. His tenants complained to him about the slowness of the elevators in the building.

The owner hired a consultant to review the problem, although his budget certainly would not afford new elevators.

Happily, the wise consultant found a solution that resolved the problem very affordably:

He installed mirrors next to the elevators on every floor. The tenants occupied themselves with mirrors, making the wait time barely noticable. :-)

  chessgames.com: Yeah, there are only a dozen chess quotes, plus one plug for premium membership.

<YouRang> <You are welcome to use some of mine:

and

<When you find a losing move, look for a better one>>

I'm not sure if you are joking, but those two are already on the list.

I do want to add more in the future ... but let's stick to three rules: (1) they have to be very short (2) stick to the famous classic aphorisms (3) never give attributions (and as such, pick the most concise/popular version of the quote even if it's not technically the "original").

Finally one last preference: that the aphorism be correct. I was tempted to put "[Develop] knights before bishops" on the list, but that's one of those rules like "i before c except after e" which has so many exceptions it's almost worthless.

Feb-04-17  zanzibar: <YouRang> with webcams so ubiquitous, <CG> could indeed install such a feature.

Put up a mirror frame, project the user's image in the middle, with the subtitle

<Who's the fairest of them all?>

Feb-04-17  zanzibar: <Everybody>, <CG>

What about this idea...

In the <Advanced Search> move the year input beneath the 2nd player input?

Here's the kernel of a game in your head... white/black/year

E.g. <Kinderman--Korchnoi (1995)>

Normally I click on the first player, fill the field in, tab-tab-tab to the second player, fill it in.

But now I have to backtrack to get to the year. Normally having to reach over to the mouse and click focus.

Why not put the year under the 2nd player?

I don't think it would inconvenience anybody, and everybody would benefit from a simple rearrangement.

I can't tell you how many times I do this in a day.

Feb-04-17  YouRang: <I'm not sure if you are joking, but those two are already on the list.>

I've seen the similar "non-joke" versions, but not the ones I cited. :-)

~~~
<Zanzibar> I think people may complain that they weren't given enough time to view the mirror. ;-)
  OhioChessFan: Here's one I've put into practice a number of times:
<First restrain, next blockade, lastly resign>
Feb-04-17  YouRang: I've seen the one that says <Nobody ever won by resigning>, but for completeness, we should add <...and getting a draw is equally unlikely.>
Feb-04-17  zanzibar: “The Pin is mightier than the sword”
“We cannot resist the fascination of sacrifice, since a passion for sacrifices is part of a Chessplayer’s nature”
“Strategy requires thought, tactics require observation”
“I don’t believe in psychology. I believe in good moves”
“Modern Chess is too much concerned with things like Pawn structure. Forget it, Checkmate ends the game”
“Even the laziest King flees wildly in the face of a double check!”
“Chess is a fairy tale of 1001 blunders”
“Only the player with the initiative has the right to attack”
“Of Chess it has been said that life is not long enough for it, but that is the fault of life, not Chess”
“You cannot play at Chess if you are kind-hearted”
“The Pawns are the soul of the game”
“Without error there can be no brilliancy”
“Chess is like war on a board”
“Many have become Chess Masters,
no one has become the Master of Chess”
“Openings teach you openings. Endgames teach you chess!”
“Play the opening like a book, the middle game like a magician, and the endgame like a machine”
“That’s what Chess is all about. One day you give your opponent a lesson, the next day he gives you one”
“Some part of a mistake is always correct”
“Methodical thinking is of more use in Chess than inspiration”
“Excellence at Chess is one mark of a scheming mind”
“Chess is the art of analysis”
“The mistakes are there, waiting to be made”
“A passed Pawn increases in strength as the number of pieces on the board diminishes”
“Good positions don’t win games, good moves do”
etc. etc.
BTW rounds 7 through to 9 of the available games from the Oceania Zonal are now in the upload queue.
:)
<Resigning, nobody has ever won by>
