Feb-12-17  zanzibar: <sonia91> - I think British, and certainly US, primary meaning is this:

<gymnasium 1. a room or building equipped for gymnastics, games, and other physical exercise.>

Yours is meaning #2.

Feb-12-17  diceman: <The pawns are the soul of the game.>

Rooks and bishops are the, "r&b."

tpstar: "Never miss a check, it might be mate" is bad advice and should be removed from your teaser list. Anyone who has ever run a junior event remembers games when someone kept checking the enemy King, believing they are gaining bonus points like a video game, without making any progress and ultimately leading to a 50-move draw.

Please replace with something better. Thank you.

Feb-12-17  diceman: <"Chess is gymnasium of the mind">

Always, "stick" the endgame.

Feb-12-17  diceman: <"Never miss a check, it might be mate">

Never miss a check, your former wife's alimony lawyer maybe better than yours.

Always check the pairings, and your opponents name. You cant win by resigning, but you could win the wrong game!

chessgames.com: <Never miss a check, it might be mate> That criticism is a good point. I already nixed one of the aphorisms because I don't believe it to be entirely true: "Knights before bishops."

Perhaps the opposite (usually credited to Bobby Fischer) should be the replacement:

<Patzer sees check; patzer gives check.>

chessgames.com: About the Oceania Zonal, I believe their PGN are still empty, e.g. http://www.newzealandchess.co.nz/Ve...

The few games we cobbled together were from Richard Taylor; presumably from his hand-written notes.

I anybody knows more let me know. There were some heavy sluggers in that event.

Feb-12-17  sonia91: I repost from World Women's Championship (2017)

<chessgames.com: [...] we're just copying FIDE.> Actually FIDE does say "Women's World Chess Championship 2017" (https://www.fide.com/calendar/fide-...) and "FIDE Women's World Chess Championship 2017" (http://tehran2017.fide.com).

You always called the previous WWCs "Women's World Championship": Tournament Index search: "women%27s world championship"

I might be able to track down some of the higher ranked player games, as during the tournament they wanted players to email the PGNs in to one of the TDs who I know (quite well) so might be able to track him down.

I will ask Leonard McClaren if he has any games he wants to send, and I can onsend them to you. Helen Milligan might have some. I.M. Smirnov, Zelesco, etc are Australian but should be able to find their games.

I'll message the TD of the ACC where some of the players were, as well as 'the heavy hitters' there will be interesting games by the "patzers" and others. After all we wood pushers are the heart and soul of chess!! Another aphorism to place!!

Richard Taylor: By the way the castling one is amusing and a bit contradictory as it sounds as though the player is being urged to castle more than once in a game....it could be handy!

But I recall I, effectively, have either lost or missed good attacking or initiative chances by castling. Quite often castling has been an early mistake. Of course this is a quibble.

John Watson (q.v.) would have a field day with things such as 'Knights on the rim are dim.'

I think that t.p.star might be tongue in cheek re the check one but indeed check is one of those things one does impulsively, as if one is itching and one scratches: and it can be an error.

But the initial 'aphorism' I think was meant partly in jest like the "No one ever won a game by resigning."

What about: 'Go for the attack (jugular?), you have to be cruel to be kind.' Or some chessic (sadistic?) version of the 'cruel to be kind' phrase.

Feb-13-17  Benzol: <chessgames.com> <I anybody knows more let me know. There were some heavy sluggers in that event.>

I'm glad you manage to work out that I uploaded all of the games that were available. There are still a fair number missing but it's a start.

:)

Perhaps the whole matter is resolved by adding another aphorism:

<Every rule has its exceptions>

or to add more clarity (at the expense of brevity):

<These little "chess sayings" that appear while you wait are just for fun -- don't get bent out of shape if they aren't always strictly true.>

:-)

Feb-15-17  YouRang: I am also not seeing the logo. FWIW I see the problem in both Chrome and IE.
