MissScarlett: Firefox no longer supports Java: https://www.java.com/en/download/he... which means I have to give up either Firefox or <cg.com>.

Well, it's been nice knowing you.

Mar-17-17  john barleycorn: As of today I get the following message when signing in to CG (translated from German):

"This is not a secure site. your data may get into the wrong hands... " and so on.

chessgames.com: We neither support Java nor recommend its use. The glimmer of hope is a project we've undertaken to make an improved pgn4web that allows piece manipulation.

MissScarlett: < We neither support Java nor recommend its use.>

I think you got it back to front. It's Java that supports <cg.com>.

<pgn4web - This is currently the only non-java viewer that we offer...>

The World vs Naiditsch, 2014

Mar-19-17  Alien Math: Thought you would like this article that had a chess historian Bill Wall quote,

Why Chess Fans Hate the Movies
From backwards boards to king-flipping, Hollywood just cannot get chess right. http://www.atlasobscura.com/article...

  chessgames.com: That's a great read, thanks.

You'd think that Hollywood would orient the board right at least 50% of the time, even if they utterly did not care about getting it right. And yet it seems that they score much worse--almost as if they are trying to get it wrong!

Annie K.: Hmm, maybe they actually *are* - in order to be consistent with classics that got it wrong.

Or is there (or was there in the early days of film) a horizontal flip effect?

Mar-21-17  MissionMagnus: www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1316507

I tried to add the above game in suggestion queue for GTM. But it says it is already in GTM library. But I am not able to locate it through search.

SwitchingQuylthulg: <MissionMagnus> That game is indeed already in the GTM library. I can think of several reasons why you might be unable to locate it; the most likely being:

1) You're using a search term that's either too common or somehow off. For example, entering "Nimzowitsch" in the GTM search's name field would not return Nimzowitsch vs A Pritzel, 1922 because there are too many Nimzowitsch GTM games to be displayed. (Entering "Nimzowitsch-Pritzel" in the name field, which sounds like an even more logical way to look for this game, would also not return it for the same reason; the GTM search would interpret such a search as "any game by either Nimzowitsch or Pritzel", and give the same results as if you'd only searched for "Nimzowitsch".)

On the other hand, if you misspelled your search term you'd get no results at all. The E-Z Search on the CG home page can handle common misspellings and alternative spellings of many names to some extent, but the GTM search (and the Advanced Search) can't.

2) If you've already played that game in Guess-the-Move, it will not show up in a search unless you check the "include games that I have already completed" box.

--

Either way, http://www.chessgames.com/perl/... should offer you the Nimzowitsch-Pritzel game as a search result; if it doesn't, something very strange is happening.

In any case, if you want to play that game in GTM you can always either use Guess-the-Move: Nimzowitsch vs A Pritzel, 1922 or go to the normal game page (Nimzowitsch vs A Pritzel, 1922) and click the Guess-the-Move banner under the move list.

Mar-21-17  diceman: <Alien Math:

Another thing that happens quite often.

Player 1 says: “check.”
Player 2 responds: “checkmate.”

It's rare to stop a check, and have it produce checkmate.

chessgames.com: <stop a check, and have it produce checkmate> That theme was used brilliantly in an Ossip Bender story. Ossip wrongly declared "checkmate!" as he overlooked the en passant option, the only defense, which actually put Bender in mate. There was a clever position to go with the story.

<MissionMagnus> The ever-helpful <SwitchingQuylthulg> gave a good answer, I'd just like to emphasize that if you can find a game in the the database you will find the link to it in guess-the-move automatically — if the game is in GTM, there's always a banner right under the diagram that lets you play. If you are still confused feel free to continue the discussion or email us at chess@chessgames.com. Thanks.

Mar-22-17  cro777: Shenzhen Chess Masters 2017, the highest level international chess tournament in Asia this year (Giri, Adams, Ding Liren, Harikrishna, Yu Yangyi, Svidler) starts tomorrow.

The tournament will be held from March 23-April 3.

Is it possible to add "chessforums", so I don't have to click on kibitz then chessforums?
