MissScarlett: I got a warning against using the symbol <&> in game info fields. Bit difficult if you're writing the name of a department store....

But if you aspire to doing something useful, I've submitted games waiting. And, mind you, they're all high class, not crap like this: P Pantelidakis vs F Rhine, 1974

I don't recall that warning, but if it let you do it, don't worry. The concern would be using the HTML use of the ampersand, like to represent the Cyrillic Ж by typing Ж

But yes, if you need to type "AT&T" or "Five & Ten Woolworth" or something, just do it; no harm done.

 chessgames.com: <Fusilli> Thanks.

About Averbakh, the algorithm that picks who is "important" enough to be on the homepage pulldown is unkind to the GMs of the 50's and 60's who played on in their old age to achieve a rating below 2500; to the software they just look like one of a thousand FMs/IMs. But I have a place where I can pencil in players manually. Clearly Averbakh belongs there; I just added him.

Hooray for Averbakh - we've got you(r) back!

Fusilli: Thank you <CG>. In my last attempt I had tried Averbach, then Averback, then Averbaj, and I gave up and went to someone else's page (Smyslov) to find a game against him.

Averbakh (currently 95) is the oldest living grandmaster, by the way. I hope he makes it to 100!

MissScarlett: There was a game, Reshevsky-Ruth, 1921; it appeared, then it disappeared. What you done with it?

 offramp: Hey! Chessgames.com!

I have a very serious question, for once.

For 12 years I was a member of IMDB, and a few months ago IMDB annihilated its Message Boards.

Every message I ever posted there has disappeared for ever, both of them.

Yes. Both of them.

The notice that IMDB gave was very short.

What guarantee do we have that the same thing won't happen here at chessgames.com?

chessgames.com: <MissScarlett: There was a game, Reshevsky-Ruth, 1921; it appeared, then it disappeared. What you done with it?> I'm so sorry, we were uploading games and had to delete some trash and somehow we accidentally deleted one of yours. I would have retrieved it but I wasn't sure which game we lost; now that I know it was easy to fetch. Here you go: Reshevsky vs W A Ruth, 1921.

Amazing that you spotted that, it couldn't have been online for more than a few minutes.

Apr-10-17 Boomie: <Chessgames>

In the description for the US Champs, it says "So defeated Akobian in the tiebreak round."

What is wrong with this picture?

I hadn't heard that IMDB shut down their comments. I probably lost 4 or 5 comments myself in that case. I have heard of many large sites shutting down their comments recently, especially news sites.

<What guarantee do we have that the same thing won't happen here at chessgames.com?>

Hmmm... that's tough to answer. I'd like to say "it goes against the grain of everything Chessgames stands for, the kibitzing is our greatest propriety resource, I'd never allow it" etc.

But as the wise Yogi Berra (RIP) once said: "Predictions are hard, especially about the future."

I can only promise that I honestly can't imagine a scenario where we would abandon the idea of kibitzing. This place isn't just about the games, it's about discussing the games. If it weren't for kibitzing, we'd just be one of a hundred sites like 365chess.com, chess-db.com, etc. (Not to impugn their fine and helpful resources.)

On a related/technical note, I do think some huge swaths of posts from the biggest pages need to be archived for database efficiency. I realized this after examining what the database was spending most of its time doing, and found out it had a lot to do with preparing the most-recent pages of Rogoff, the Kibitzer's Cafe, etc. But even there, the ancient posts won't vanish, but they may be relegated to a "historical" area adjunct to the normal kibitzing. When that day comes we'll try to make it seamless as possible; ideally you won't even notice it was done.

OhioChessFan: I know it can be edited, but the intro for the US Champs has a bunch of future tense descriptions of how the tournament will be conducted, and then one sentence in the past tense telling us that So beat Akobian-I mean Onischuk-in tiebreaks. Maybe they should be written in past tense to start with.

chessgames.com: Indeed, tense consistency is a big problem when you have multiple editors, but it also has to do with the fact that the page is edited before, during, and after the event.

<Maybe they should be written in past tense to start with.> I don't know about that. It doesn't make much sense to say that a tournament "was held in St. Louis" when it hasn't even started yet. I don't see any other solution than running through the article at the end and converting it all into past tense.

I've noticed that's how TWIC does it.

Fusilli: <CG> <Ohio> I was about to go ahead and use my editing superpowers (which kicked in a few months ago and I only used once, for a trivial grammar error) to quickly fix this, but then I wondered: is there a way to know if someone else is editing the same page as I work on it? Is there a way to call dibs on editing a page? I suppose that the issue coming up here might prompt more than one of us to take on the task.

Fusilli: <CG> <OCF> I went ahead and edited the description of US Championship (2017).

chessgames.com: <Is there a way to call dibs on editing a page?> It happens automatically. When you make an edit on any page, it is "checked out" for 15 or 30 minutes*, and only you can edit it until the timer runs down. If you make further edits, it will reset the timer.

* 15 for tournaments, 30 for players.

Annie K.: In.re. editing current tournament intros: I usually just copy the write-up from <chess24> pretty much as-is, with credit/source link. My purpose is simply to provide and preserve this available information about the tournament while it's still easily accessible.

Please do not remove the links to chess24; if we used their intros while the tournament was happening, I believe we still owe them credit for the use of their work, even if the text was somewhat changed and/or added to later.

Other than that, any editor may feel free to add to them, and/or correct tenses afterwards, as you wish. :)

Fusilli: I just edited a bio for a player (Benjamin Bailey) and entered his FIDE number. I see that his latest FIDE rating (2104) is not reported under "Years covered" though. I was assuming that would happen automatically. Wrong assumption?
Apr-11-17
Premium Chessgames Member
chessgames.com: <Fusilli> Yes it happens automatically but there is a delay. Here's how it works:

Once a month (usually on the 1st or 2nd) we get the giant list that FIDE publishes and update ratings of all the players we can identify. Since we couldn't identify Mr. Baily previously without a FIDE ID, we simply had to go with the one game on file, where he was 1993.

Now that you've supplied the FIDE number it will happen automatically at the start of May.

(Actually it happened 5 minutes ago, just for him, because I wanted to go verify that what I'm saying is correct.)

Apr-11-17 zanzibar: RE: IMDB

<I hate how effective this blame-shifting narrative has been. Now people are angry at the "troll" strawman rather than Amazon/IMDb for deleting over a decade of valuable discussions, often about obscure films, that can't be found anywhere else. When IMDb indiscriminately deleted the message boards, they destroyed literally hundreds of thousands of personal interpretations, rare trivia and speculations about ambiguous moments in movies. If IMDb/Amazon gave a @#$% about any of that, wouldn't they keep an archive publicly available?

This is an excellent read/listen from professionals in web communities: http://www.communitysignal.com/imdb... . It's enough to make any skeptic question their belief in IMDb's intentions and realise just how perfidious this kind of move actually is for the internet as a whole.>

https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/com...

Not everyday you see a perfidious outside of <CG>.

Does anybody know if the IMDB discussion pages were perserved on wayback?
