 | | Check It Out: <MS> 2.Bd3 is an illegal move in that Staunton game. |
|
Nov-12-20
 | | MissScarlett: <There is a starting FEN which with Steve's improvements to Olga 1, should now work.> It don't.
<And it has an ambiguous move..> Which is? |
|
| Nov-12-20 | | Z4all: RE: Thomas Gordon vs Staunton, 1852 <Missy> (or Olga?) should have caught the contradictory usage of the FEN tag with a SETUP 0 tag. Also, the PGN should really also indicate, via a comment, that the game was really played at "Bishop + two moves" odds. Oh, and did I mention, in addition to introducing the <Source> tag to <CG>, that I'd like to also add the <Source_url> tag? Comme ça:
<[Source_url "https://books.google.com/books?id=Z..."]> (Oh, and <CG>, please allow the full 255 characters for Source + Source_url tags, as per PGN standard and not some ad hoc limit) |
|
| Nov-12-20 | | Z4all: Really, really, apologies, really. |
|
Nov-12-20
 | | Susan Freeman: 255 characters IS the limit. |
|
| Nov-12-20 | | Z4all: . Daniel had the Source tag more restricted than 255, once-upon-a-time, iirc (and I do). * * * * *
Also, RE: <missy>'s game, the FEN startup is really a kludge, which needs an extra comment for explanation, and still leaves the move numbers wrong. Better would be to adopt the "--" <null move> notation used by the "elite" programs, like SCID and pgn4web: <<null moves support>pgn4web supports PGN null moves in the -- notation (used by a number of chess tools like scid and chessbase), such as in 1. e4 -- 2. d4 Note the equivalent <> nullmove notation is currently not supported by pgn4web.> https://sourceforge.net/p/pgn4web/w...
Olga might like to do likewise. Then the move score could match the source, as Staunton . intended it to! |

| Nov-12-20 | | Z4all: For purposes of historical documentation:
Biographer Bistro (kibitz #14395) |
|
Nov-12-20
 | | WannaBe: A little 'history', why 255?
255 in binary code is 1111 1111 So, yep, there you have it. Back in the ol' days, with limited memory and what-nots. That was the max you can go. All 1s, anyone who have ever played with colour code in HTML will know what colour you get with (255, 255, 255), or what you get with (0,0,0) and the fun is the combinations you can create inbetween. (I think that is 27,666,216 combinations)
Maybe its time we don't have 255 char limit? Modern programming languages now have String, instead of char[] as variable defines. |

 | | MissScarlett: Don't know how or why, but I just processed one of <jfq>'s submissions. |
|
Nov-14-20
 | | jessicafischerqueen:
<MissScarlett> lol no, you didn't. But I know what you mean. You "processed" a submission that had already been processed. I process all my submissions seconds after I submit them, and then check on the publication and log it in one of many dedicated games collections. The game of mine that you "processed" had already been published. Apparently, one of my submissions accidentally appeared in your list. When that happens, the person who actually submitted that game (me in this case) will always see it in their list as well. The one you see is a "phantom" due to your cache on the editing page not clearing properly. It's not possible to process one of my submissions because they always go into my box= I check that every single time. Then I process them immediately, and check the "completed process" log on the right hand side of the page. Then I inspect each of my newly published games in the database and log it. I know exactly what is going on with my submissions. To get a "clean submission page" in your own box, sometimes you need to refresh the editing page- in some cases, refresh several times. Stray submissions from other members may get in to your box by accident. I do a lot of uploading, so it happens to me fairly often. That's why I am always on the look out for stray submissions from other people showing up in my box. When this happens, I delete the stray from my list, then refresh the page until I get a clean submission box. Sometimes I have to refresh 2-3 times to get a clean box, but it always gets cleared eventually. Once I had to reboot my computer, but it rarely comes to that. Hopefully when the beta testing is done, they will firm up the code so the page becomes more stable. |
|
Nov-14-20
 | | MissScarlett: Do many stray into your box? |
|
Nov-14-20
 | | jessicafischerqueen:
<MissScarlett>
Not really- but I do so much uploading that the "raw number" might seem high. I would say it happens rarely, maybe 5% of the time. I will share some things I noticed.
If a stray pgn is in your box, then none of yours will be in your box at the same time. So be sure to check your box carefully before you process, although in truth you can't be doing anything bad for the database even if you do process someone else's game(s) by accident. It won't create duplicates. When you notice there is someone else's game(s) in your box, it means you are not actually in your box- you are in the box belonging to someone else. This can get confusing because at the top of the page it will still say "Miss Scarlett" but the box on the bottom of the page will be somebody else's box. So today it happened several times- I submitted some of my pgns through the <Upload Utility>, then went to "my" box to process them, only to notice the games were not mine. But I often recognize them- they are usually games I had already processed on behalf of another submitter in a previous session. This might account for my box "remembering" them and recapitulating them. So I accidentally "re-processed" some of the games I had already processed. But as mentioned there's no harm done, because they will not become duplicates. In these cases, if you look carefully at the log box on the right, you will see "3 games skipped" or some such. I discovered that the best way to get back to my own box was 1) delete the foreign pgns from my box. This will not delete them from the system, only from my personal box. 2) After deleting them, refresh the editing page. 3) Then you will be back in your box and the foreigners should be gone. If not, just repeat the procedure until your box is empty again. 4) If that doesn't work after a few tries, reboot. As mentioned, I only had to do that once so far. It seems to me this is a problem with "caching" in our boxes. When we process someone else's games, our box (cache) "remembers" them and can reproduce them later as "ghosts." The workaround I described should work for you and other colleagues as well, but obviously it would be preferable if the admins permanently fixed the caching errors. |

 | | offramp: I came across oneof my previous posts just now. Kolisch vs S Rosenthal, 1864 (kibitz #1) I have a feeling that the +- no longer works. It did then, but now {+-} with parentheses is identical to +- without them. |
|
| Nov-14-20 | | Z4all: <JFQ>, and others, you have my sympathies... Who's the architect for that messy business ?!
* * * * *
Makes me wonder, what are Susan's long-term plans for this site? I'm interested in how much thought she's given to the handing off the site, and specifically, how she'll select her successor. <Sargon> seems to be indicating his future role will be decreasing (Chessgames Bookie chessforum (kibitz #13052)). (Which might be just as well, imo.)
I remember how concerned some were about the site's future when Daniel was alive. Those concerns remain despite (or because?!) of the best efforts of Susan, it seems to me. . |
|
| Nov-14-20 | | Z4all: BTW - has anybody else noticed that <CG> has become somewhat sluggish of late? I'm getting noticeable delays loading pages. |
|
Nov-14-20
 | | jessicafischerqueen:
<Z4all>
If <Sargon> might be reducing his role, what about hiring you to help solve some of the coding challenges? |
|
Nov-14-20
 | | jessicafischerqueen:
<Z4all> I had some sluggish loading this morning as well, but back to lightning fast again. Tbh, the slow loading has almost disappeared for me altogether. |
|
Nov-14-20
 | | Susan Freeman: Hello all
I have addressed the sluggishness at some meetings recently.
What I want to do,although Sargon is skeptical about this. He likes the servers near him physically.
Set up two servers. International ones One for Asia, India and Eastern Europe.
The other one for northern and Western Europe and the north and south America’s.
Maybe more.
I know Dudley squat about this, but I am checking it out.
We have a lotta irons in the fire right now.
A big shout out of thanks to all the volunteers who make this site work.
And I really do appreciate all the criticism too. Honest, I do. |
|
Nov-14-20
 | | Susan Freeman: <Z4all>
Not sure what you meant by my best efforts might be a concern for the future of CG.
Hmm
I think what Sargon meant by that reference was not stepping away as web master from his duties , (lol) but having the administrator keep charge of the Bookie.
There is a big difference between web master and administrator.
As for me, I am here to stay.( With a little help from my friends. ) |

 | | Susan Freeman: Susan Freeman: I have a brilliant but cheeky daughter who is a millennial who would be the obvious heir. ( in the wings) She would fit right in. 😊 Her name is Kristina. |
|
Nov-14-20
 | | jessicafischerqueen:
<Susan Freeman> I doubt it's meant as an aspersion. Without you the website wouldn't even be here. But that is the problem, and the cause for worry. I spoke about this often with <Daniel> both in private and public- Around 70% of the internet links in our kibbutzing are dead. This is the problem with the internet. If the head of a library can't take care of the library any more, the library doesn't disappear. But if the head of a website disappears then the website also disappears. The only exception to this is giant companies- Google isn't going to "disappear." But Wikipedia might. That's down to Jimmy "Blue" Whales. That's his labor of love and I have no idea if he has made provisions about his Wikipedia after he's gone. One thing for sure it makes no money- "Blue" Whales has to beg for donations several times a year. The point is- what happens if you are suddenly gone. Many of us have put over a decade of very hard work into building up the cg.com database. If not for you, all of that work would have been gone- instantly and forever. So the question is= unless you line up some kind of succession/inheritance plan, all of our work here is precarious, and ephemeral. We would feel much better about this if you made arrangements for the future while there is still time to do so. That said, again if not for you it would already be gone eh? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyo... |

 | | jessicafischerqueen:
Your brilliant daughter! You are already thinking ahead, which is grand. |
|
Nov-14-20
 | | Susan Freeman: Thank you Jess.
My will is up to date.
My funeral arrangements are made
And paid for.
I even wrote my own obituary
Virgos do that sort of thing.
I lost my son. My other daughter I have disinherited. Kristina is the one. Very capable. Regarding the games and corrections, Stevie is thinking out of the box and making a new approach. Rather than patching a tangled mess. Yet still keeping the old. Olga man will make the transition. As far as the servers go, the thought of amazon AWS servicing several parts of the world has come up. Ease and speed would be improved IMO. |

 | | Susan Freeman: PS
I also have the name of an internet attorney whom I am seeing about protection and preservation of of the site, and preservation of intellectual property. Once I recover a bit more from my surgery. He is in Palm Beach, about 40 miles away. This will be an addendum to my will, if need be. |
