   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <al wazir> - It's not easy to go back through past Holiday Present Hunts and discover useful information. Very few people have played regularly over the years -- even the players who are acknowledged as best, <SwitchingQuylthulg> and <MostlyAverageJoe> have now ...

Domdaniel: Wesley is a man of his word. Once again, I am impressed by his willingness to stick to commitments.

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: <Jess> So, uh, you don't hold with the idea that all the Grand Narrative makers of the late 19th century -- Marx, Freud, Darwin, Lewis Carroll, Queen Victoria, etc -- were really Classic Realist novelists?

That is one very sick puppy. What happened to eating at mealtimes? And drinking at other times?

Domdaniel: Sometimes I wish I *was* a sockpuppet.

- Why, Dom??

Cos somebody would shove me in the laundry basket and shut me up.

NB. Hitherto unsuspected masochist tendencies.

Do sockpuppets experience pain and suffering?

No, but they're a martyr to their feet.

Domdaniel: <Jess> Thank you for the warning but as you can see I didn't heed it. It was 2am here, I was tired, I was running out of things to bounce off, and - strange though this may seem to some - I don't have the kind of mind that can go relentlessly on talking to itself in short bursts ad bloody infinitum.

So Moby Dick is now 14th and I'll be 15th. I find it suspicious the way he lurked behind, then powered past and should really demand a dope test. But I'm not competitive enough anymore.

One post a day for forty days in the wilderness, coming up.

Or not.

I guess they've had 200 million years of evolution spent perfecting these bursts of speed and biting other creatures in half.

Eh? Given more *what*, exactly?

I'm just a kind of *Ancient Marinade* which stoppeth one in three. I want my obscurity back. Like these guys:

There are men in the village of Erith
Whom nobody seeth or heareth
They spend hours afloat
In a flat-bottomed boat
Which nobody roweth or steereth.

Domdaniel: Having studied the tactics used by the opposition I'll just add - a little testily - that they are not for me.

Posts without puns violate the Olympian spirit, along with various sea-nymphs and dryads who don't really want to be violated.

But don't think the Punic Wars are over just because Delenda est Carthago. We still have the nuclear elephants. And planning permission for an elephant farm facility on the French riviera.
