   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: <Marvol> Good point. And the other Nimzo -- 1.e4 Nc6 -- would be much less profitable.

That's a cool <op avatar>, btw. Hard to drag my eye away from its vertiginous vortices.

Domdaniel: Okay. Bear with me while I do a *tiny* bit of numeration ...

We just hit page 400 here (huzzah!). When it fills, that'll be 25 x 400 = 10,000 posts on this page.

Which is almost identical to the number of posts made by me, anywhere.

Therefore - I think - the number of posts made by other people here is almost identical to the number of posts by me elsewhere.

Is this (a) seriously weird, (b) a total misunderstanding on my part of how stuff works, or (c) just nature's way of balancing things?

Don't ask me.

Domdaniel: <Deffi> - <too bad India did not copyright the 0>

Yes, zero is up there with naan and jalfrezi among major Indian contributions to human wellbeing.

Aug-24-08  Marvol: <Domdaniel: <You cannot choose to disobey a law simpy because you disagree with it.> If everyone thought like this then police, judges, criminal law employees and jail staff would be unemployed and on the dole.>

You disappoint me, your reasoning skills are normally much better than this. Or it's a joke - not a good one in that case.

Of course not everyone that breaks the law does so because of the reason that you give. So there'd be ample work for "police, judges, criminal law employees and jail staff" even if us lot would stop being civilitically disobedientical.

(Sorry to pollute your forum with this but I much prefer that over polluting the challenge page. It's filling up with crap, you'd not guess that by tomorrow we've got a move to consider.)

Aug-24-08  Marvol: <Open Defence: too bad India did not copyright the 0>

Maybe they were so proud of its invention that they wrote down another, just for the heck of it, when they had to decide on the size of the royalties :).

<Domdaniel>: agreed about the naan and the jalfrezi.

Domdaniel: <Marvol> Of course it was a joke: reductio ad absurdum, I believe. But there's also a point about law-breaking. Like most people, I frequently break the law -- just not in a way that's likely to result in prosecution or criminal sanctions.

I also studied law for a year or so, but we were never meant for each other.

Some recent research showed that drivers break speed limits but then stop at a red light -- perceiving either a different level of illegality or a different level of risk.

A joke - quality not guaranteed - is my way of saying I find a debate somewhat ridiculous. Maybe I find too many things ridiculous, for some tastes?

And - while I admit I contributed to it - there's far less rubbish on the game page than in earlier bouts. It's been quite focused, overall.

Sigh. Never try to explain a joke.

Domdaniel: 200 years ago, people were imprisoned for debt and executed for theft. Something like 90% of those in prison (in Britain, at least) were there for debt.

In the unlikely event that our civilization survives another few centuries without major damage, I suspect people will look with horror on our habit of jailing people for drug possession.

OK officer I'll come quietly.

So it possibly doesn't count as analysis at all.
