   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <al wazir> - It's not easy to go back through past Holiday Present Hunts and discover useful information. Very few people have played regularly over the years -- even the players who are acknowledged as best, <SwitchingQuylthulg> and <MostlyAverageJoe> have now ...

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Domdaniel: I knew you could do it, Ohio. For some reason, I've lost the knack - at least I enjoy seeing my pals win.

Every year, there's been some recurring type of clue -- so we can expect to see more of "the most xxx player ever". I'm trying to think of names that might fit.

You hadn't, ackshly - I did mention the term while discussing the shirts:

<bought the set - good excuse to throw some money at ceegee, that I like to do anyway>.

Well, I do. ;)

Congrats <Ohio> and <craw> again! :)

That's easy: Jameson

How about the most most player ever?

M Mostertman

One problem with trolling for names is the player directory doesn't include everyone; I checked a couple of pages and didn't see anyone in there with less than 19 games.

Annie K.: Yeah, the best way I know of to find <all> players is just to write likely names into the search box (NOT the EZ Search!) on the homepage.

Domdaniel: <Annie> You also mentioned something called 'shopping'? The recreational kind, was it?

<Ohio> The original Jameson whiskey distillery is about ten miles from here - I passed it recently - but it now functions mainly as a tourist attraction. All the alcohol in the world comes out of three giant vats in Osaka, Milwaukee, and Copenhagen, with local flavorings added later.

Vicious stuff. Should be banned.

Annie K.: <Dom> Naw, groceries. :) I go looking for things when I need them. Shopping as recreation doesn't do it for me. As in, pointless and boring?

Most unfeminine of me, I know. ;p

Could you humor me and try again? We're not talking whiskey.

And here, dear reader, we leave Mr Cohen and enter the present tense. Bra drag. Dave Bowie and Uri bleedin' Geller overnight, eh? They wouldn't have taken much of my, or anybody's, time.
