Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Jan-21-14  MarkFinan: Dom.. I meant the type of arguments I get into with people like AJ and Jim. I'd love to play them and settle things that way.. I stay away from politics and religion reall, eespecially after playgroundplayers forum argument. I do respect you Dom, but I wish you'd have taken a little more time to look and you'd see that it really isn't me. I had him on ignore and kept seeing the stars pop up indicating a reply to my last comment. I approached him about what his problem was and he still hasn't said, so im not going to ask or try again because I don't really care.. And this has just made me half hour late for a kinda date tonight, so please don't think I don't care what *some* of you here think, because I do. I care what you and a handful of others think.. Anyway, I have to go. Talk tomorrow 😃

Domdaniel: <Mark> I reckon he just makes one-off comments in a lot of places. So it seems to you as if he's following you, but from his point of view you're just one of many people he's replied to. Does that makes sense? If you check the statistics page, JB has made even more posts than I have. Which is a lot.

Domdaniel: <Mark> Oh, I hope your "kinda date" works out well...
Jan-22-14  MarkFinan: Dom.. It kinda went okay 😄 Well maybe you're right, you usually are on these things but let me give you an example. There's a guy who posts on here who had cancer, a really nice guy who thinks im a really nice guy (I know, lol) because I always have supportive words for him, always ask him how he's doing etc etc. Anyways, I see the wolves surrounding him the other day and I chip in with a few words of support.. Jim Bartle comes along and posts a link to a game page from some kibitzing from my first night ever here, I ask him why, he says "I'll let others judge!". Now others did judge, and they told him not to try it because im smarter than him. And I couldn't care less about that link anyway, but it's the second time he's done it!?! So I told him to just stay away, because whether he denies it or not... He's followed me around since I arrived over 3 year ago, please believe me there was a reason he was on ignore! Anyway, I think he's a bit simple, and that's just me being honest, and if it offends him then tough. But he's just one of those annoying guys that never says anything funny, clever, or with charm or intelligence, but he's like part of the furniture, lol. I don't hate Jim, I don't think he's a bad person, I just think he ain't that bright.. And it's that little simpleton kkderek that, along with the So lot, have really annoyed me. This is what I've said to him.... You're a numptie who knows nothing.. This is what he's said to and about me... British (starts with racism) cokehead, crackhead, go die, I hate your guts, your a psycho, your a danger to children, you stalk me, and the list goes on... Both of them are what I call "lurkers". They wait til im either talking to someone nice or debating something with someone who I *do* care what they think, then they pop up. Usually with some dense remark though, it has to be said. But whereas I don't think Jim is a bad person I think kkderek the man of a thousand nationalities, is possibly the most stupidly offensive person I've ever seen on this site! But I couldn't care less what he says or thinks of me, and that seems to bother him.. Like I should care!?! Well like I said before, if that's what he thinks then that's what he'll get .. Apart from that it's brilliant, haha.. Nah, life's pretty good right now and I haven't been able to say that for a few years, good friends, just moved place, I feel great, I don't smoke and rarely drink, I eat healthy, I always do alright with the women... I can't complain about life in general, it's started treating me well since I got boring, lol.

Nobody told me there'd be days like these, strange days indeed - Lennon 😃

OhioChessFan: I'll weigh in, and affirm on this momentous occasion, I agree with <KKD> and almost all of his previously longer post that is now redacted, I suppose because he decided to tread a little more lightly. If I was an admin, I'd be getting my ban button ready. I already know I don't have to point out that it's fine by me if you don't agree with me, disagreement is always okay by you, by me, by reasonable people, but I did want to add my voice to <KKD's> on this matter, in what is possibly our first point of agreement ever.

While <KKD> didn't mention it, I am especially annoyed because the incessant and vapid self justification of what are clearly inappropriate posts is beyond tiresome. "I was just kidding", "That's how I am", "I'm not gonna change", "I can respond to your posts and that's fine but when you respond to me you are stalking me", "blah blah blah blah blah blah" don't excuse incivility.

I hope we're good, I know we're good, I don't know, if you had seen the original <KKD> post you'd know he expressed very closely what I've been thinking for some time.

Life is difficult-Me, but I loaned it to Scott Peck

Jan-22-14  Shams: I think Scott Peck more or less disowned everything he wrote before he died. Does that mean he decided life was easy after all?

Domdaniel: My Klu Hunt book prize -- Techniques of Positional Play, by Bronznik & Terekhin -- arrived today. It now constitutes about 25% of my new chess library. And it looks excellent.

After a few years where I thought I was a positional player trying to learn to be more tactical, it's time for a change of direction. Maybe this time I'll get the positional basics right.

Domdaniel: I wish to thank CG for 'Techniques of Positional Play', my prize in the latest Klu Hunt. It's exactly what I need.

Expect my rating to take off, just as soon as I put the lessons into effect...

Srsly, it looks like the best guide to middlegame plans and strategies that I've seen in many years. Not since the classic works on the topic by Nimzowitsch and Kotov.

  WCC Editing Project: <Dom>

On a rare frivolous note, I have a serious chess question I thought you might be able to help with?

This line here, characterized by the move <5...Na6>

1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Nf3 dxc4 5.a4 Na6

click for larger view

I recently read that this "is called the Smyslov variation", but in our <Opening Explorer> the line is designated

<D16: Queen's Gambit Declined Slav> http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches...

<Roy Orbison vs. Kaiser Hohenzollern> is the first instance of <5...Na6> in our database- W Orbach vs W Von Holzhausen, 1928

Then in our database <Smylsov> revived the Kaiser's idea here:

Gligoric vs Smyslov, 1959

And then went on to play it more times too:

Stahlberg vs Smyslov, 1961

Spassky vs Smyslov, 1962

Julio Bolbochan vs Smyslov, 1966

Geller vs Smyslov, 1967

Taimanov vs Smyslov, 1969

Hort vs Smyslov, 1979

Huebner vs Smyslov, 1979

W Schmidt vs Smyslov, 1980

Ivanchuk vs Smyslov, 1996

Bacrot vs Smyslov, 1996

So now if you look at the actual <Smyslov> game pages in the Kaiser's line, the opening is designated

<Slav Defense: Smyslov Variation (D16)>

QUESTION: How/why does our database create a "main opening name page"- http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches...- with the same code number <D16> as an opening that is clearly mamed something different on all of the <D16 coded> games pages I have listed above?

Is this some kind of cg.com computer botting "maths" problem?

It looks kind of bush league to me. Should I write a stern letter to my local Congressmen?

We don't have Congressmen in Korea, so I may be out of options here...

Jan-29-14
Premium Chessgames Member
Domdaniel: <Jess> First off, you *do* have congresspersons in Korea - just not Korean ones. They tend to be visiting Americans, I think.

Zweiter punkt: I've mostly given up trying to fathom the ways of OE and opening classification. The number of ambiguities in the database - never mind outright errors - is vast.

At first glance, I'd have categorized your example as a Slav. I know of a Smyslov Variation in the Reti, but it's different ... White plays Na3 and a pawn sac.

I'm not aware of the line you cite being also named after Smyslov, but it's eminently possible.

'Congressmen', eh ... hey, isn't 'congress' a euphemism for, y'know, intercourse?

PS. I am *not* a dirty old man. Not yet, anyhoo.

perfidious: <Dom> It was distressing to read of your being on <ray keene>'s ignore list.

While you have strong views on diverse topics and have expressed your opinions on events in the publishing world, what you have stated has been honest and without rancour, which is far more than I can say for the likes of <Lonnie Lurko>, who has an evident personal agenda of some sort which pervades his treatment of the whole matter.

It would be unfortunate if <ray> were to keep you in iggydom, for we already have one <Fractious Floridian> dispensing summary justice, as he deletes any post which remotely disagrees with his views, or is perceived as being critical.
