 | | Domdaniel: #1: an amusing neologism by <iking>: <Carlsen was mandandled in the endgame?> Here's to *mandandling*. There should be more of it. |

 | | Domdaniel: A short story by Hannu Rajaniemi: http://web.archive.org/web/20050204... Derivative, I think. His novels are much better. |

 | | Domdaniel: <Jess> I'm glad you found the Kevin Ayers song (good detective work, btw -- the other quote was 'Song from under the Floorboards' by Magazine -- I always think of them as comprising a genre containing just two songs). You know that Ayers died last year? He was in Soft Machine in the 60s ... if I had a time machine, I think I'd drop in to the UFO club, London, 1965-66, to see Barrett-era Pink Floyd with Ayers-era Soft Machine. And then maybe drop into the Athenaeum to see a Dylanesque Ray Keene in action ... Ayers is also reputed to be the subject of the John Cale song 'Guts'. I once posted a link to the lyrics here, and it got zapped. "Buggr in short sleeves forked my wife..." and so on. In later years Cale varied with the less in-your-face line "Bugr in the short sleeves loved his wife..." Ahh, Maisie... fresh as a daisy... from soul to poison soul... |

 | | OhioChessFan: <New York's Kira Kazantsev was crowned Miss America on Sunday -- becoming the third Miss New York in a row to win the title, a three-peat Kazantsev said would be 'monumental' before her win. But a typo that flashed on screen during her 'Pitch Perfect'-inspired performance is getting more attention than the performance itself. In a bid to reveal that Kazantsev loved 'anything Jane Austen,' broadcasters unintentionally informed the audience that she loved 'anything Jane Austin.' > http://www.aol.com/article/2014/09/... |

 | | Domdaniel: <Ohio> Maybe it's just me, but I *hate* the word 'three-peat'. Twenty-three-peat, on the other hand... |

 | | Annie K.: Oh, there you are. I was just about to consider calling you, I'll have you know. ;) What's this about not answering your messages, then? :p This is for you: Annie K. chessforum |

 | | Domdaniel: <A> Ta. I'm alive, of course, as usual. In a manner of speaking. Various channels have been down, yanno... |
|
Sep-28-14
 | | Annie K.: Hmmmph. Well, all right. You better stay around this time. :) |
|
Sep-28-14
 | | Domdaniel: One can but try.
It's undoubtedly true that other folk tend to try harder, but such is life, eh? |
|
| Sep-28-14 | | dakgootje: Good to see you back, if only for a little while, DomD :) |
|
Sep-28-14
 | | Domdaniel: <dak> -- <... if only for a little while ...>
Heh. How did you guess? |
|
Sep-28-14
 | | Annie K.: Simple, because you were invited to stay. Ask a harder question! ;p |
|
Sep-28-14
 | | Domdaniel: A harder question? Uh, OK, I'll try.
(1) Who said "Is Mrs Penguin at home?"?
(2) Will the underdog win? |
|
Sep-28-14
 | | Annie K.: (2) usually, in literature, not so often in reality, and speakina, I rather expect Carlsen to win his upcoming first title defense, which is one reason you should stick around. (1) Viv Stanshall, and I'm cheating, but I didn't Google it. Then how? :) PS -
1. Judit Polgar has always been a class act.
2. Susan is not Judit.
Are these sentences related, or not? ;)
The flagship is not rilly the place to hold a discussion on that, but there may just be a certain triciness there. :s |
|
| Sep-29-14 | | dakgootje: I like the.. word-combination.. The sentence part; The senticle 'if only for a little while'. It has some.. relaxed kindness. Presumably due to 'For Those Who Can Still Ride in Airplanes for The First Time', by Anis Mojgani. Near the end, from 3:00 onwards, it's used twice in this little anecdote about reading a book with a kid on a bus. Rather like the performance, even though I haven't heard it for years :) |

 | | OhioChessFan: Annie, my own sillygism:
1. The Kardashians are not a class act.
2. Susan is not a Kardashian.
3. But she could be. |
|
Oct-01-14
 | | Annie K.: <Ohio> that works nicely. ;) |
|
Oct-02-14
 | | Domdaniel: I'm not entirely sure what a Kardashian *is* ... well, OK, I have *some* idea... So. If Susan was a Kardashian, she'd be Kusan. |
|
Oct-02-14
 | | Domdaniel: <Annie> Close, but not the full cigar. The line was supposedly spoken *to* Mr Stanshall, not by him. He had answered the doorbell wearing a penguin costume, with flippers. The innocent caller looked at him in horror and said "Is *Mrs* Penguin at home?" |
|
Oct-02-14
 | | Annie K.: Sounds cute, if nitpicky. :p
You yourself have attributed the line to Stanshall several times, for example here: Domdaniel chessforum :) |

 | | Domdaniel: <A> I thought I might have done.
Oh well, oy vey, und so weiter ... proof, if anyone still requires it, that I'm not actually infallible. Pope Dom XXIII |

 | | Domdaniel: A Pynchon movie: the film of 'Inherent Vice' has been screened in New York. Doc Sportello lives. If you can call it living... |
|
Oct-06-14
 | | Annie K.: Huh? I like the humor of the book, but what on Earth would it have going for it as a movie, other than the adult - if you can call it adult ;p - rating? A mess of barely developed, dodgy characters, no overall plot to speak of, and as subplots go, well, there's a dozen or so of them, all going nowhere. The director must be certifiable. :s Then again, I have no idea what movies are like these days... |
