But the other categories, I think, can develop from year to year -- a helpful or constructive person one year might (or might not!) also be helpful (etc.) the following year. In any case, 'helpful' and 'constructive' could easily be combined. I reckon the number of awards could be smaller ... and yes, I agree that the nominate/vote system is unnecessarily cumbersome. While the team won both matches (hooray - this is the first year that the league has switched from game points to match points) -- while we obviously benefitted today, I prefer game points ... there are a number of reasons, such as the fact that narrow losses (2-3) are scored only as losses in the match point system, and 5-0 wins are simply wins, without a premium. The subtleties and nuances are lost. Match points (win-draw-loss) may have some advantages, soccer style, in certain competitions. But in a small league like this, game points must be better. Personally, with a loss and a draw, I lagged behind the team. The draw was especially painful -- I got into an endgame with three pawns for a Bishop, which I should've won. Having missed the winning line, I liquidated to a h-pawn + (wrong) Bishop - and offered a draw. Which, to my astonishment, was refused -- I had to play about 30 moves to demonstrate a totally drawn theoretical position. Jan-10-15    Pulo y Gata: <Domdaniel: After Tata Steel, Wesley is due to visit Ireland for the Bunratty weekender in February. Although the event is not FIDE rated, it has become one of the strongest weekend tournaments in Europe, with about 30 GMs playing (including Adams, Svidler, Short, etc in recent years). There's a lot of excitement here about So's impending visit -- he's also due to give a simultaneous.> If you get the chance to play in the simul, it would be great to play the French. You sure will pick up a lot in the post-game discussion, he being a fellow French connoisseur. In an case, he's an amiable, soft-spoken young man. I'm not likely to play in the simul -- it's in the town of Ennis, which has a thriving chess club, but is a bit too far away for me. I may go to the Bunratty tournament, though. I'd like to see Wes in action -- he has been very impressive recently. Today's draw with Carlsen was really calm and cool. He has also become a genuine chess superstar. I played in a club match yesterday, and a lot of people were talking about his upcoming visit. Svidler, Topalov, and Adams, among many others, have played here in recent years, but this is the highest level of anticipation that I can recall. He told me that previously he'd been dismissive of the Oscars, seeing it as hype, razzamatazz, a marketing gimmick dressed up with sentiment. And then, to his own surprise, he found himself oddly touched to be voted a winner. He felt appreciated, and it pleased him. Wouldn't work with the Caissars, though. Jan-14-15    Domdaniel: <Pulo y Gata> I'm now told that Wesley So's simul in Ennis will be for junior players only - 20 of them. Which excludes me, though I may go to watch. I think it's possible to learn something about a player from the way they conduct simuls. Nigel Short, whom I played a couple of years ago, is extremely efficient and scores highly. Tony Miles, whom I played in the 1970s, was a more interesting player, though this may have reduced his simul efficiency. I remember he began with 1.d4 on the first board, 1.c4 on the 2nd, and 1.Nf3 on the 3rd, then repeating this pattern every three boards. This is a device used by blindfold simul players to make it easier to distinguish between the various games -- though I'm not so sure how useful it is in a normal simul. I faced 1.d4, and replied 1...e6, to which he played 2.e4, transposing into a French. I was happy, not just because I liked playing the French, but because I thought he might be a little out of his comfort zone. This was perhaps true. After 1.d4 e6 2.e4 d5 3.Nd2 b6, he made strenuous efforts to refute Black's rare 3rd move - which may be a little dubious but is not easy to refute (in fact Miles later played it himself as Black).
