jessicafischerqueen: <Deffi> no, I paid for it but it won't arrive till next week sometime.

I can't wait!

Plus, some generous soul has posted a games collection here with all the games from the book.

Which means I can read the book with the games collection on my screen, and use my wooden board to play any variations <Tal> may have put in his annotations without having to remember where the bloody pieces orginally were.

Jul-05-07  mack: <and use my wooden board to play any variations <Tal> may have put in his annotations without having to remember where the bloody pieces orginally were.>

Oh boy, I wish I were you. The thought of being able to read Tal's Life and Games for the first time and going through all those mad variations is wonderful.

Jul-05-07  Ragh: <Which means I can read the book with the games collection on my screen, and use my wooden board to play ...> And also simultaneously drink coke while having popcorn for a complete feast for the mind.

jessicafischerqueen: coke and popcorn are for MOVIES

I will be enjoying some tonight with my latest horror rental.

An important and inane <BATCHIMEG AT THE MOVIES> will follow, for "film fans" only.

If you ever see <jessica_fischer_queen>, <jessica_fischer_blitz>, <pal_benko2003>, <alex_grishuk>, or <viswanathan_anand_fan>, that'll be me, so sit down for a game if you like.

I play at 10 minutes a move, mainly.

jessicafischerqueen: I learned about saccing the exchange on defence today from my <chess coach>, so I found this game with saccing the exchange on offence for good measure!
Jul-05-07  WBP: <Jess> just looking in briefly at the end of another long day.

Yeah, saccing the exchange--or more--is always to be considered. It's always fun bringing an imbalance to a position, even if it (temporarily) seems to be working against you!

Have you studied Marshall much? His games are fantasitcally creative. For the most part, he failed against the "biggies" (Capablanca, Alekhine); but he produced so many gems. Years ago I had a book of his games--would love to get my hands on it (or a similar collection of his games) again! I'm sure there is one available. I just got a USCF catlogue, which I'll look through.

Your consultation game has been very interesting to watch--both the game itself and the respective two teams' players conspiring ("breathing together"!).

Best, Bill

  jessicafischerqueen: <Why <<<Pal Benko>>> still Matters>

Part One:

The evening after Game 12 in the 1990 World Championship:

"When Garry came back into the room... I handed him Benko's self-published book... He started reading. 'This is very important,' he said, as he slowly truned a page. Garry's face softened. For the next hour he lost himself in Benko's book, which contained interesting and instructive endings... along with Benko's sharp analysis. Garry was enjoying chess for the first time since the start of the match."

And, if that's not enough for you, here <Benko> shows why you needn't be an endgame expert to beat <Fischer>: avoid the endgame altogether by TOTALLY ANNIHILATING HIM.

Benko vs Fischer, 1960

Jul-06-07  chessmoron: <Jess> Have you read John Fante's "Ask the Dust"?
Jul-06-07  achieve: <Jess>!! You work <magic> with the colors and posted a gamelink... My system is shocked!

Fischer on 1. P-QP4..

http://www.chesshistory.com/winter/... (this link is actually from that game page)

GOOOO BENKO!

Jul-06-07  WBP: <Jess> <How the hell are you?> Busy, busy, and busy. Thought the summer would free up all kinds of time for me, but it's been quite the opposite. Much of this has to do with personal projects (Peru), but also lots of prep for the fall semester as well as the much looked forward to but much dreaded social stuff. I look into Chessgames several times a day, but don't have the opportunity for more than a post or two. That will change, but not for the time being. Plus, two weeks from tomorrow we're off to Banph. Lots of things I'm looking into there (hint: I have to go to BFRO.net and review sightings in that area).

How's the teaching gig in the fall looking? When are you moving away? Etc.

And yes, I'm with ya'. Pal Benko does matter. (I love his name) The Benko Gambit, good instructor, endgame studies, and so on. Good call!

Jul-06-07  WBP: <Pal Benko> <Cont.> A slightly more serious and considered thought: Benko does seem one of the more respected theorist in the last several years. It's interesting to note that many famous for being theorists--Nimzovich, Grunfeld, Breyer, Reti, (perhaps) Geller--never quite made it to the very top; near it, in many cases, but not quite there. Of course, top-flight players such as Steinitz, Euwe, and Botvinnik were quite theoretically inclined (if I may put it that clumsy fashion), but many of the "big" theorists seemed almost hampered by their ideas--probably not really fair to say. But certainly their <contributions> to the game were studied and absorbed by the leading players (e.g., Alekhine frequently employing hyper-modern ideas, while not really being a hyper-modern). Their ultimate significance for chess can therefore not be underestimated and far outweighs the relative successes they achieved in their respective careers.

Anyway, just some idle thoughts.

Jul-06-07  Eyal: <Jess> Check out Anand's two wins over Ponomariov from today, in the Ciudad de Leon rapid tournament: http://tournaments.chessdom.com/leo....
Jul-06-07  chessmoron: Werner Herzog has a new movie out called 'Rescue Dawn' with Christian Bale (Batman Begins). Definitely recommended.
Jul-06-07  Ragh: <Eyal> Why do you think Anand moved 50..Qh1 for his last move instead of queening the h-pawn in that Ruy Lopez game.
Jul-06-07  Ragh: Nevermind, it looks like a mistake on that chessdom link. I checked the pgn on the official site and it shows game score only till 50.Kc4 (0-1). No black's 50th move. If at all there is one, then I guess it should be 50..h1-Q.
Jul-06-07  Eyal: <Jess> Btw, in the KID game Taimanov vs Najdorf, 1953 which I mentioned as an exemplary execution of a Black kingside attack, there's a pawn sac on g3 as well...
