| Sep-04-07 | | twinlark: No matter how much you hear about a place, it's one of those truisms that the moment you get there you'll find out things that no-one's ever mentioned. Underground Oz is something else; sometimes I get the feeling there's more underground than above it. Spooky place sometimes.
I haven't been to Korea, but I'll have to admit being defeated by your reference to the Negev. Is this the latest Israeli export? |

| Sep-04-07 | | chessmoron: Hey <jess>. School has not started yet. Next week. Hearing that some students of yours does not speak any English, are you teaching ESL for them or I have been mistaken? |
|
| Sep-04-07 | | brankat: No, she is teaching Chess SL :-) |
|
Sep-04-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: heh.
Yes <Wilson> I am teaching ESL to both children and to my fellow teachers. I work in a Korean public school in <Hyunpoong>, which is a tiny farming village about an hour north of <Daegu> by bus or car. And, as <branko> suggests, I WISH I were teaching Chess SL. But we must eat the <Kim Chi> that is placed before us. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Lasker Keres Reshevsky> Thank you for the interesting position!
I will only be able to examine it on the weekend, as I have so much work to do at school. Right now it is my lunch hour, I am typing on my school computer. |

| Sep-04-07 | | chessmoron: Are you a Vegan? If not, are you sick of just eating vegetables all day? |
|
Sep-04-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: vegetables?
You've got to be kidding.
I eat <Pul Gogi> and <sea food> like it's going out of style. Korean food kicks ass.
Super hot, the way I like it. |

| Sep-05-07 | | Ragh: <Korean food kicks ass.
Super hot, the way I like it.> That helps in shouting off at the next person who pisses you off. |
|
Sep-05-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: that is correct, my dear <RAH!> |
|
| Sep-05-07 | | Ragh: <Jess> So, when shall we resume the world championship (in a couple of weeks?). I can't wait to regain the lead, if at all possible. hehe. |
|
Sep-05-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: RAH!!
We can resume around Halloween, I believe.
It will take me at least that long to figure out what the heck I'm doing here, both at work and after work. I need to learn enough Korean to go to a doctor/dentist, take bus/subway/taxis, be polite to strangers. I need to develop a curriculum for 20 different classes that is geared to the level of each class. I need to diagnose the English level for each class first. I need to get my health card, my bank account, my cell phone accout, and my alien registration card. So I need at least two months I figure till I feel comfortable enough to devote time to playing such an important match as <Tal-Anand 2007>. As I posted above there, I have only played one serious game of chess on Yahoo since I've been "in country." It was a great game, I enjoyed it very much (see post above for brief description)-- but I was definitely rusty after only a few weeks off. I do not think I will be able to maintain the level of play I attained during my year on CG.com== I simply don't have enough time.
But for sure we will finish <Tal-Anand 2007>. We cannot disappoint the chess fans of the world.
Regards,
Mikhail Tal |

| Sep-05-07 | | Ragh: wow. Quite a big to-do list you have there, Jess. I too like the idea of resuming around Halloween; it kind of gives a spooky touch to the match. Let the chess fans of the world quench their cerebral thirst with the fake World championship in Mex, in the meanwhile. And do learn proper korean, lest the dentist might pull away the wrong tooth. This somehow reminds me of Aunt Polly pulling Tom's tooth in a strange way in "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer". <The old lady made one end of the silk thread fast to Tom's tooth with a loop and tied the other to the bedpost. Then she seized the chunk of fire and suddenly thrust it almost into the boy's face. The tooth hung dangling by the bedpost, now. > :) |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: heh.
Did you know Korea has some of the best Dental care in the world? Plus, it costs about 5 bucks American to get a cavity filled, believe it or not. The profession is heavily subsidized by the Korean government. In fact, in some Dental clinics they will charge you 10 Dollars for a root canal, then give you a pet fish and a shot of whiskey as change. It's a fact! |

 | | Domdaniel: <Jess> *alien* registration card? You never said... So ESL is -- what? Ewok as Second Language?
You are the Salvador Daley of travel writing, ma reine. Hallucinometric detail and great big slight exaggerations. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: I would never hyperbolate, <Master Domo>, though I've been known to give in to the sweet temptations of <litotes and metalepsis> from time to time. Heh aliens are real.
Who knew?
Last night I dreamt I was in New York with my new friends and I kept getting mugged and they wouldn't help me. What do you think this dream means?
Ack. |

| Sep-06-07 | | notyetagm: <jessicafischerqueen: Hello from Korea!! I just wanted to thank you for your wonderful analysis of the <Tal game of the day>. I find your analysis EXTREMELY helpful in my chess study. I am busy teaching so I can only study/play for a few hours a week now. Thank you so much!!
Jess>
You're welcome. |

| Sep-07-07 | | EmperorAtahualpa: Hey there <Jessica>. :) Long time no see! (or "read" I should rather say) How are you doing over there? It's great to hear you went off to South Korea to teach English there. And I actually would like to know a little about it. I have two basic questions:
- Which organization recruited you to work over there in South Korea?
- Is it possible for non-native English speakers to teach English as well? My native language is Dutch but all of my university education was in English and I actually spent about half a year volunteering at an asylum seekers center teaching English there, so I have some experience already. Hope you can fill me in on those things. :)
Much good luck to you, and see you around!! |

 | | Domdaniel: <Jess> -- <What do you think this dream means? >
I think it means ... that your brain is shuffling data while you sleep. And a good thing too, with all the (non-theoretical) novelties in your life. Sometimes, with dreams, I get a sense of The Director Inside, a quite different personality, much smarter than me, composing dreams and coming up with conceits I'd never think of in a million years. |

| Sep-07-07 | | Ziggurat: <jess> Greetings from a fellow recent West-Asia relocatee (?). I'm getting settled in here in Singapore but I'm awfully busy, just like you. |
|
Sep-08-07
 | | Domdaniel: <Jess> The Korean President, Mr Roh Hip Nol, is a credit to your English teaching. Most fluent. |
|
Sep-08-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Heh I'm not sure what the state of date rape drugs is in current <Korean pharmacology>. And quit trying to fool me with puns!! |
|
Sep-08-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Hello <emperor>.
the recruiter can be found at
http://www.footprintsrecruting.com
If your English is fluent I don't see why they wouldn't give you a job. They hire by phone interview from all over the world. Good luck! |
