Dec-14-07  cotdt: That was some game! Did you guys bet? I bet 200 on Kamsky, so far he has made me a lot of chessbucks!
Dec-14-07  achieve: <cotdt: That was some game! Did you guys bet?> Not me - I never was a better and never will be - but Kamsky in this form is worth a few chessbucks!

<Jessica> though has placed all her bucks on Kamsky I believe ;-)

Where the heck is she btw!

HEY YOU!! There's guests here, ya know!

(sigh - screaming wont help)

Dec-14-07  cotdt: LOL <acheive> at this rate Kamsky will make all of us very rich. :)

<jess> btw since you're in korea, have you checked out chinese chess or korean chess yet? it's a cool game!

Dec-14-07  Joshka: Hi Jessica, just to set the record straight, GM Ray Keene is also a member of chessgames.com and has an active page.
Dec-14-07  Eyal: WGMs User: Susan Polgar and User: Yelena Dembo also make an occasional appearance around here.
Dec-14-07  evenua: Hi, Jessica. First of all, I must say I am quite surprised to hear that you are in <Korea> at the moment! It is totally out of my expectation. :P First time I've ever seen a CG user from Korea.

<My Korean name is Choi Hyunpoong.> Cool name, though it sounds more like a man's name. Also, it's a bit old-fashioned, IMO. But I like it anyways! I wonder who made that Korean name for you? Was it you or other students/colleague teachers? By the way, my Korean name is Cho Yong-Hoo.

<At the rate I'm going, I should be able to have a Korean conversation in about 20 years.> Ah, that's good. A friend of mine (who was also Canadian) told me that it would take 20 <Light Years> for him to be able to do that. Actually, Korean (along with some Asian languages) has a bunch of grammatical stuff that is entirely different from that of Western languages, and this might be the hardest part for you. Surprisingly, many foreigners got to learn Korean vocabs more easily compared to the Korean grammar.

<Hey are there any chess clubs near where you are? There are Zero chessclubs within a 500 mile radius of my school.> I think a 200 miles radius is enough, since Korea is not such a big country ;) I know there are some chess clubs in Korea, if not many, and have been to some of them. One of them is in Seoul, and another here in Daejeon, where I've been living for 4 years. So it depends on where you live. Tu es ou? :P

<However, Korea is a very beautiful country and you really couldn't meet a nicer group of people, as a whole.>

Thanks :) I have some friends from Canada, and all of them are really nice. There were two students from Toronto, who came to my Univ as exchange students. One of them, named Jim (I forgot his full name.. it was like Jamieson sth sth(!) sth(!!) Pryor), was very much addicted into chess and taught me <ab initio>, literally. I owe him a lot, let's say, more than a half of my current rating :P

A few <thoughts> on chess in Korea, FYI: You may have noticed this, but Korean people in general do not play chess very much, and there are not many who <know> there's a thing called chess. Most peeps are into <go> - with white and black stones - that has been famous over 2000 years, let's say. We also have a game similar to chess, as someone in your forum pointed out, and it is called <Jang-gi>. Here, chess is regarded as <Western Jang-gi>, just like you guys call it <Korean chess> or so, and people <really> don't know much about it. But recently, there has been a sharp increase in the number of chess players - I am one of those - in Korea. Back to the chess clubs here, I occasionally go to two clubs and know them very well. I can tell you anything you wanna know, but before that, let me know where you live :) If we live close to each other, I could bring you to the club some day, when we both have time.

I wanna say sth more, but gotta make it short(well, I hope it's not too long?) this time. Actually I was working on my final term paper which is due tomorrow morning, 11AM. I play on playchess and gameknot, sometimes on FICS as well. But I prefer OTB chess, so whenever I have time, I play my friends with my own board and pieces :) If we could meet up and play chess some day, it'd be really great. And if you have any questions, just e-mail me. <My handle here + gmail.com> is my address.

Good night :)

jessicafischerqueen: <Vince>! Thahks for all that amazing information.

I will reply to your email address.

But first, since it's Saturday,I'm off for some Internet chess!!

I only play on Yahoo000.

I will email you tonight before the <Shriov - Kamsky>

Regards,
Choi Hyunpoong

As you know, <hyunpoong> means "Black Wind."

My school janitor, who is also my best fried, gave me the name.

He is <Choi Woon Dong> (sports!) so we are "brother and sister" at my school.

Dec-15-07  Eyal: G'day, Jess - as a horror buff, you should enjoy the opening of the day: the <Frankenstein-Dracula Variation>!
Dec-15-07
Premium Chessgames Member
jessicafischerqueen: Heh and a horrific opening it is too!

Are you ready for <Kamka- Sure Enough> tonight?

<Kamka> draws you heard it here first!!

Dec-15-07  Eyal: Apparently, the variation was given its name by Tim Harding in his 1975 book on the Vienna Game, in which he said that the bloodthirstiness of this was such that <a game between Dracula and the Frankenstein Monster would not seem out of place.> (have to justify my nomination for Best Historian...)

I won't make any predictions about today's game - anything can happen. I predict, however, a draw in the first game and a win for Kamka in the second.

Dec-15-07
Premium Chessgames Member
jessicafischerqueen: Heh accurate as usual, <Cappin>!!

Have you seen the <Vienna Gambit deferred Houlihan Variation>?

It has produced 0 wins so far.

OK more predictions.

<Kamka> draws tonight AND tomorrow night and goes through the the coveted <semi-semi-quasi final>.

jessicafischerqueen: And yes, when your categories come up for voting I will be lobbying hard for you to garner a presitgious and coveted <MannBee> award.

right now it's the <best avatar> vote and I'm lobbying hard to get out the "gorilla vote" for <Chessic Eric>.

Batchimeg at the Movies (all rights reserved)

Dec-15-07  Eyal: Heh - Deffi (as <Red October>) already won the <best avatar> category... The voting today is for Best Historian (that's why it came to my mind), but actually there are worthier candidates than me in this category.
Dec-15-07  achieve: <Jess> You talked about move order--

the position in Shipload - Kamkakker is another one after move 18 b4... Bishop PINS KNight with Q on d1 - such easy things can escape you if you do not do a round-up of all the thoughts you've deliberated- BEFORE_ making the actual move... Prob redundant to say but we all fall for that simple trap when getting excited!

WHOOOOOO

"as you were"

Dec-15-07  achieve: Ok will send the EMU tomorrow morning with some very helpful tips on how to decorate your living room in order for it to create the perfect atmosphere for chess and concentration - I've heard rumours that colours play a big role in this subliminally active process...

Ooooooh yesss...

G'nite

Dec-15-07  chessmoron: <Jess> I will wait for your "Batchimeg at the movies" review on my recommendation any milliseconds, any seconds, any minutes, any hours, any day, any month, any year, any year before I die.
Dec-15-07  achieve: <Jess> The EMU flew out this Sunday morning your time.

jessicafischerqueen: JESSICA’S <MATCH OF THE WEEK> (meaning I didn’t lose in this one)

Ok this is the second time I beat someone rated over 2000 and I did it with the black pieces so I’m posting it. Shoot me!!

<Silent Bob 2023 v. Jessica 1830> <Yahoo>

(well, he didn’t say much)

1.e4 c5
2.Nf3 d6
3.Bc4 Nc6

<He’s likely wanting a closed Sicilian- didn’t want to play Najdorf, so OK then. 3…Nf6 is preferred here but I like Nc6 better cuz I have a phobia about white pushing his e-pawn. It’s annoying to even have to think about.>

4.o-o Bg4??

<And I’m out of book. I’m out of any book I ever read anyhoo. He’s made a very committal move here and I have time to arrange a Kingside attack. However, I will never, ever, ever, play Bg4 from this position again. EVER. Because it loses IMMEDIATELY to Bxf7+! I don’t know how he missed it. Sigh. Well OK this is most embarrassing but at least I learned why they don’t play 4…Bg4 from this position. Next time, simply developing 4…Nf6 from here and Black is perfectly fine. If Black is not perfectly fine after 4 moves it’s time to start studying Parcheesi maybe. I’m so embarrassed!!.>

5.h3? Bh5

<and at least he doesn’t have stinking Bxf7+ now.>

6. d3 Nf6

<yes he’s wanting closed Sicilian OK good for him then- bring it on buddy>

7.c3 e6
8.Nbd2 Be7

<All “natural” moves- no preservatives or chemicals yet—but I think White is too passive maybe? Despite the pin on his King Knight, I think his “b Knight” is more actively placed on c3.>

9.Qb3 Rb8

<This looks passive on my part—but I’m thinking—hang on—after Rb8 I have <Na5 with tempo> whenever I might want it—a nice tension to have. However, maybe 9…a6 is just as good or better here since that makes the b-pawn immune: if Qxb7 then Na5 traps the Queen>

10. Ng5 o-o

<OK I get it he’s pressurizing my e6 pawn but no immediate threat so just castles>

11.Bxe6? Na5 (with tempo- heh)

<I’m insulted!! He thinks he can steamroll me cuz he has so many ratings points more. I bet he got them all playing 1/0 Bullet!! He thinks I’m going to routinely take fxe6 and lose a pawn AND the exchange to a Knight fork???? Very insulting!! BTW I think I could have just played <h6> right off here. Also, His Queen goes to c2 here- a passive square considering he just sacked for an attack>

12.Qc2 h6
13.Bxf7+ Bxf7
14.Nxf7 Rxf7

<Ok he’s got two pawns for a minor piece and a POTENTIAL attack—my King safety is dodgy, but his pieces are quite passive at the moment--so why’s he trading down? Fine with me>

15.Nf3 Nc6
16.Nh4

<and now a long think from me. My adrenaline is through the roof cuz I don’t need a computer to figure I’ve got a big edge here. So now I’m thinking of a long term plan to win from here… Whaddya do? Black to move…

  jessicafischerqueen: 16…Nxe4!

<Heh—He overlooked that tactical shot but I found it (only after a long think, though- I’m not a good Blitzer>

17.exe4 Bxh4
18.Be3 Qf6
19.Rad1 Qg6

<Heh he has f4 in the air but I know I’m on the attack now>

20.Rd5 Rbf8

<His rook outpost looks scarier than it actually is as I pile up on his Kingside>

21.f4 Bg5!

click for larger view

<Heh—He had a long think after this one—he’s got stuff hanging loose all over the place- His queen, the Rook on e1, his bishop— If he goes fxg4? then I have Rxf1+; if f5? then I have Bxe3+ (with tempo- heh)

...actually I think almost any of the legal moves for Black here probably wins. But I was happy to find Bg5 anyhoo.>

22.Qd1

<and offers draw. Not this time Buddy!!>

22…Bxf4
23.Bxf4 Rxf4
24.Rxd6?

<Losing on the spot—He has to take Rxf4 here first but it’s all gone for him anyways cuz he’s a piece down with no compensation already>

24…Rxf1+
25.Qxf1 Rxf1+

RESIGN

0-1

<I win!!! Even though “objectively” I actually lost on move 4 (blushes). But I believe I played error free after that, and managed to punish him for a reckless attack followed by curiously passive moves. If you’re going to “sac for attack” you got to NOT trade down pieces and you got to get your pieces on the most active aggressive squares possible and maintain initiative at all times. He didn’t do this and I spanked him good for it too. >

jessicafischerqueen: Even though this game has the <4...Bg4???> disaster, I'm proud of my subsequent play and I'd like to dedicate this game to <Niels> and to <notyetagm> for teaching me about the value of capitalizing tactically on the enemy's <LOOSE> pieces.
