Dec-16-07  Eyal: G'day, Jess. I don't have much to add to your notes of the game - you were lucky that your opponent didn't notice your blunder at the opening, but starting from move 5 you played very well, defended (and then attacked) accurately, and found several good tactical shots - 11...Na5, 16...Nxe4 and 21...Bg5 (after which White's only way to "keep playing" seriously for a little while longer is 22.Rf5, though of course he's lost even then).

Just 2 comments - following moves 12-14 you say <so why’s he trading down?>; but once White sacrificed the piece, though the sac itself was unsound, the idea to get rid of your LSB was actually correct, considering the relative weakness of your light squares - otherwise White is even worse (in engine terms it's a difference between ca. -1 in the game vs. ca. -2 if White plays, say, 14.Ngf3).

Out of curiosity I've checked chessbase database to see if there are any more recorded games with the 4...Bg4?? blunder, and - brace yourself - I found 16(!) such games, and only in 3(!!) of them White found the winning 5.Bxf7+. One of the reasons for such repeated mutual blindness might be that Bg4 is not uncommon in such Closed Sicilian formations (only it should be played AFTER Nf6 - now you know why...), so it doesn't look suspicious if you play the opening in an "automatic pilot" mood and don't actually stop to think after each move.

Dec-16-07  Open Defence: looking at the diagram one maybe fooled into thinking White controls the center with his pawns
Dec-16-07  achieve: Very, very good looking game <Jess>!

I don't have time to analyse this morning, but you're likely to hear from me at a later date... Meanwhile analists from all four corners of the globe will have converged here before the end of the day- I predict...

I'll EMU you- but in any case congratz on a powerful performance up front!

Dec-16-07  notyetagm: <jessicafischerqueen: Even though this game has the <4...Bg4???> disaster, I'm proud of my subsequent play and I'd like to dedicate this game to <Niels> and to <notyetagm> for teaching me about the value of capitalizing tactically on the enemy's <LOOSE> pieces.>

Very nice win, <jessica>, and thanks for the dedication. :-)

In that last diagram, you had enough <PINS> (3!) to start your own sweatshop.

Dec-16-07  Eyal: <Jess> Oh, btw - you were complaining a few days ago that the current rating numbers for chess players are too complicated... so there's an article in http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail... on the Elo Rating System including a few simple formulas - especially the third one, starting with p(e) - which make everything perfectly clear!
Dec-16-07  evenua: Thanks for your e-mail. I replied this afternoon :)
BTW, the game looks very nice.
Dec-16-07  Ziggurat: <Jess> I left you a message about bugs and stuff in my forum.

About the game - You crushed the guy! Lucky he didn't spot Bxf7+ though. Coincidentally, I won an online blitz game on using this same tactic today, before looking at your game.

Some comments

I don't like 3. Bc4 in this opening - maybe it's not actually a mistake, but I feel that it gives black "free kicks" against the bishop after a6 and/or e6.

On both move 7 and 8, I would have considered a6. And on move 9, I think it would also have been better than the text move, as you commented.

11. Bxe6 is a coffeehouse move, so you were right to be insulted, but luckily you reacted correctly and resolutely beat back his "attack".

I agree with <Eyal> that he had to trade his knight for your LSB.

After move 14, it's all a matter of technique, as they say ... but that can be tricky. 16..Nxe4 was a nice shot which basically was the final nail in white's coffin.

Well done!

Dec-16-07  WBP: <Jess> Great game! You know how I love tactics. And great commentary--hilarious!

You say this was blitz (ten minutes/game)? If so, that's even more impressive.

  jessicafischerqueen: <Bill> Thanks!!

No, not blitz. Took over 2 hours to play.

My Blitz rating is 250 USCF

Dec-16-07  Open Defence: <Jess> my game with Mr Kat is gonna get very violent... in fact it might get an R rating
Dec-16-07  Open Defence: one tip .. (as if I am qualified to give chess tips) ...

before moving just run through your opponents possibilities of giving or capturing with check, this may be the move that busts your combination, scheme or plan...(that would have been one way of catching Bxf7+)

secondly look for Knight moves.. it is sometimes hard to visualise the Knight's influence on the board and you could easily walk into a fork

This was suggested by a famous Master.. but doggone it I can't remember who it was ? Tartakower ? Tarrasch ? maybe Mr Kat can help

Dec-17-07  achieve: Good tips!!

I learned exactly the same from my dad's Euwe- and Bouwmeester books!

<Jess> I sent you two coach EMUs and tried in the second one to make some sense...

A'right- see you later -- I wanted to post some material but the server was down all day and maybe it's better you read them two EMUs first before I get all "coachy".

AROOOAHH PATATAAHH

Dec-18-07  Boomie: <Jessie: Get in my game>

I hear and I obey, my liege.

1.e4 c5
2.Nf3 d6
3.Bc4 Nc6 (3...Nf6 is more common but Nc6 was Rybbie's choice. Go finger)

4.o-o Bg4?? (Much has been written about this shot. I can add that it's biggest plus is you've taken him out of theory on move 4. If he wasn't silent before he was struck dumb by this move.)

5.h3? Bh5 6. d3 Nf6 (Oddly we're back in the opening. One whole game in my database was played with this position albeit with a different move order.)

7.c3 e6 8.Nbd2 Be7

(White's first move advantage is gone now and deservedly so.)

9.Qb3 Rb8 (As you noted, a6 is better as it prevents Bb5.)

10. Ng5 o-o (What was he smoking? Can I have some? g4 followed by Bb5 was the sane route.)

11.Bxe6? Na5 (Better was 11...h6 12. Nxf7 Bxf7. Na5 is OK but there is no compelling need to move the beastie to the edge of the world.)

12.Qc2 h6 13.Bxf7+ Bxf7 14.Nxf7 Rxf7 15.Nf3 Nc6 16.Nh4? (More pipe dreams. Completing his development with Be3 is so much better than this lemon. White is probably lost at this point.)

16…Nxe4! 17.exe4 (Ng6 makes more sense. This is totally lame)

17...Bxh4 18.Be3 Qf6 19.Rad1 Qg6 20.Rd5 Rbf8 21. f4 Bg5 (A very nice double pin. To win by pin is no sin. A'pinnin' and a'grinnin')

This seems like a good place to stop. Except for Na5, you played master, or should we say, mistress chess. I'm so proud of you.

Dec-18-07  achieve: <Jess> Got it - cool !!

Just sent you another one on the award winning subject of transporting pgn-files along with some seductive FEN - strings... (The latter being the toughest- oddly enough)

Max Euwe
