| Dec-31-07 | | achieve: Happy New Year in real time Jess!
Korea made it! Now let's see if Europe sails smoothly into 2008! Ali - Frazier came to mind as well as you mentioned -- I was ff-ing lucky to be on the edge of my seat during that match in 85 -- it was just magic and SO powerfull! That's why I have this passion 20 years on maybe... Who knows? Best Wishes to your family and friends back home as well!! |

 | | chancho: <achieve> Are you talking about (Ali Frazier III) 1975? |
|
| Dec-31-07 | | achieve: <chancho> I was too young to really compare ( I was six at the time) -- but I consider Borg/McEnroe 1975-80 and Kaspy - Karpov 85-90 as a few of the true great rivalries in sports... Ali -Fraxier III was of course shaped by #1 & 2 (but stands on his own, as well) K - K must rank right up there with the best ever contested rivalries in sports... In the end it's all a matter of taste how you rank them |

| Dec-31-07 | | evenua: Hey Jess,
Thanks, and the same to you. Happy new year!
Btw, Koreans usually celebrate the New Year's Day around the beginning of February - yes, we are still using the lunar calendar. I'm going to Seoul tomorrow morning for a little tourney in my chess club. Wish me a luck, please! :) |

 | | Domdaniel: Why *are* prog rock lyrics so funny? Pomposity married to inanity, usually. And it's not just prog: punk and postpunk can hit similar depths. I cite Echo and the Bunnymen ("John Webster was one of the best there was, he was the author of, two major tragedies"). Possibly the funniest lyric ever written (apart from The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, Spinal Tap, Alberto y Los Trios Paranoias, The Rutles, and Jethro Tull -- but they're *meant* to be funny, I think). "And where the hell was Biggles when you needed him last Saturday?"
- Jethro T., 'Thick as a Brick'
"Death will come at midnight for those of you who wear false teeth"
- Alberto y los trios Paranoias, 'God is Mad'.
Happy ... new-ish ... uh-oh, here comes the terminator ... no, the other kind ... year. |

Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Queen Victoria's favorite goth-prog lyricist, wrote "Come into the garden, Maud, for the black bat-knight has flown" about (a) Batman, (b) Chess, (c) Prince Albert Island. 2. Deduct 5 points for any answer.
3. Lord Tennyson was a founder of the British Chess Association. 4. The Tennison Gambit, no relation.
5. SSsplat. Forgot to charge my light brigade, didn't I? Longyearbyen, Spitzbergen, 23 A.P.
