| Jan-31-08 | | achieve: I know- and Of course I agree/understand with a lot of what both of you said-- plus I do not pretend to know too much on techno, rap etc. to judge it's artistic value... It's a non issue in a way.. the only thing I distinguish between are the quality of musicianship, which varies and is not linked to a specific style/timeslot/period (I can't be more clear than that ;-p |
| Jan-31-08 | | Open Defence: anyway thanks <jess> maybe I should stick to chess in the English Notation... that way the Continental Eurpeans dont stand a chance.. no offence <achieve> heh! |
| Jan-31-08 | | achieve: hmmm Even I like Nat King Cole's version of 'The Continental' the best... When there was less "McDonaldization" ;-)
(But even then, in the late 40s, the Nat King Cole show suffered bigtime from sponsor pressure - I have those on tape -- In beautiful Classics Nat had to replace the words from the song with "Rheingold Beer e.g.) |
| Jan-31-08 | | Open Defence: heh, not to anyway diminish the great talent Nat King Cole had (great pianist AND vocalist!) but I have a hunch his image had to be made acceptable to White America in his time.. no doubt those were different times.. so this is in no way a slur on the man by any means.. but the point I am trying to put forward is that art and marketing are both at cross purposes but at the same time inter linked other wise the artist just paints for himself.. sings to himself even street artists market themselves... in older times the great classical composers needed to be in the favour of Royal or Noble Patrons.. |
| Jan-31-08 | | achieve: You're absolutely right. Nat needed to be made marketable for the Upper Whites in America -- this had it's consequences in many other ways as well, but the thing Larsker pointed out was the relative gain of terrain of artificiality and modern "technique" in the music making process of these days... But there is no generalization available and judgement is always personal... Am I rambling?
OK - I love Prince - and he is equally able and genius with synthesizers as he is with his acoustic guitar sitting on a old chair -- it's just in whose hands you put these technical devices that is important, to me... I taste everything and just remember what I like, is all ;-) |

| Jan-31-08 | | Open Defence: <OK - I love Prince - and he is equally able and genius with synthesizers as he is with his acoustic guitar sitting on a old chair -- it's just in whose hands you put these technical devices that is important, to me...> THAT WAS MY POINT!! the good Artist will use the tools to make the art shine through... whether its just the pure human voice... whether it is an acoustic instrument, stringed, wood wind etc. I am sure the Piano was radical for its time as the strings were hammered by themselves rather than plucked or vibrated by the artist.. guys like James Brown can shake the world just be saying HEH! |
| Jan-31-08 | | Open Defence: heh we are of course looking at different ends of the spectrum.. there was a time when all i did was play Classical Guitar day and night,.. I just immersed myself in it.. until I tried to experiment.. then innocence was lost heh! thats the beauty of music.. pure and perverted at the same time... some long for the purity.. some like Zappa like the twist in the tale.. |

 | | TheAlchemist: <Jessica> Hi! Great "coolest" list! Nice to see Bob winning. And I thought I was the only one who liked John Cale's version of "Hallelujah" the most, Buckley's version was much more critically acclaimed. |
| Jan-31-08 | | achieve: Purity and perversity - one can't live without the other... Jazz was considered music from the devil, also because of the athletic way girls danced to it in (up)skirts, the drinking that was involved--- all misinterpreted to an extent, maybe, but that was then... Times they are a changin' |

| Jan-31-08 | | achieve: It's actually number ONE, here, if you type in the full monty... Above the link to this forum it says: "did you mean- enjoy firearms and keeping your SHOES in line" (no kidding) |
| Jan-31-08 | | Open Defence: <"did you mean- enjoy firearms and keeping your SHOES in line"> and where does that lead ? the Republican Convention ? |
| Jan-31-08 | | achieve: HAHAAAAAA
Haven't tried that yet -
sigh
Good one - I wont google the republican convention, please. |

 | | Domdaniel: <Alchemist> -- <Cale's Hallelujah> -- Oh, there are a few of us about who understand. The Buckley version was a nice radio-friendly take on Cale's arrangement, but it was JC who reinvented the song. Like he did with Heartbreak Hotel in the 70s. |

 | | Domdaniel: "You got a lot of Rheingold Beer/ To say you are my friend ..." This marketing stuff gets in everywhere. |
| Jan-31-08 | | technical draw: I swear to ... I don't understand half the things that are posted here. (and my IQ is in the millions} |
Jan-31-08
 | | Domdaniel: <tech> You can understand *half*? More than most, is my guess. Except Jess, of course, who is always a few steps ahead. F'rinstance, this stuff about "keeping shoes in line". It all depends whether they contain feet or not. With feet, you're into line-dancing; without, you're Imelda Marcos. Right. Um ... so, is Imelda Marcos a Republican, or what? |

 | | Domdaniel: Oh, I see. It's actually "keeping hoes in line" ... that, I guess, means keeping your garden equipment neat and tidy. "One man went to hoe", as some ancient folk song thing goes. |
| Feb-01-08 | | Open Defence: did you check out the women and hand guns site? |
Feb-01-08
 | | Domdaniel: <Jess> News just in ... the long-lost score of a game between #21 and #2 in your Coolth Parade has recently resurfaced. Yikes. He murdered me. I'll post it here or chez Frogspawn when I drum up the courage to look at my own imbecility. |

 | | Domdaniel: <Deffi> That <Women & Guns> site hit me like a dum-dum silencer. The editor knows as much about spelling and grammar as I do about guns. |
| Feb-01-08 | | Open Defence: I strongly suspect that the editor of the magazine is man.... |
