 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Eyal> Thanks so much for putting the <Fischer pics> right in my forum!! They are beautiful indeed- they show Bobby at his best. A super-confident yet totally insecure kid with a chess mind that had been touched by God-- And of course he brought the chess board to Misha's bed--- All he cared about was chess and chessplayers.

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Yes it's brilliant--- touching, and hilarious-- bringing a chessboard to his hospital bed.... vintage <Fischer> at his best. A clueless individual in many respects... but his friends, <Tal> and <Spassky> among them, seemed to have forgiven him his monomaniacal personality. IE- while sitting beside Spassky in the audience, about to go up and get his World Championship Trophy--- Not even listening but rather whipping out his pocket set to show Spassky something-- and the look on Spassky's face is priceless--

Glad here to see you.
I'm a bit divided as I have ... OK this is too personal... Btw I'm so glad I met Mal; he is one class act. |

Feb-22-08
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Everyone's divided <Dr. Euwe>, when it comes to <Fischer>. He kind of forced that response, to say the least.
Yes, <Malthorpe> is A-1, no doubt there. and he met so many of the great chessplayers!!!
If I were <Dom> I would go get <Svidler's> autograph at his tourney, or at least say "hello" or snap a picture of me with my hand behind his head with "rabbit ears".... I mean really.
I never met a famous player!!! |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: I"ve just been anlayzing my last game with my <Shredder> and learned something about opening ideas against the <closed Sicilian>... IE- in the following position:
click for larger view4...e5! is a really strong move because it puts a real bind on the d4-square... In my game, I actually played 4...Nc6, and my computer insists that White should suck up the tempo loss and play 5.d4, I suppose to prevent black playing e5 and getting that big bind... So in the game he played 5.Be2 and STILL THEN 5...e5 is a great move cuz of the bind.... OK next time I get a chance I'm going to try the 4...e5 strategy... What are your thoughts on the matter? |

I'm so glad that <you> especially enjoyed these fabulous pics of Bobby and Misha too! Had I known that you were featuring the classic game [Leipzig Chess Olympiad Finals 1960 - "French Drawings" - Game of the Day, October 15, 2007 // Fischer vs Tal, 1960 ] between these two chess titans, I would have got them to you sooner! ~lol~ ;) The story about Bobby visiting Misha in the hospital (Curacao Candidates Tourney 1962) is true! He (Bobby) was the 'only one' out of all the participants at Curacao to visit his good chess friend the 8th WCC - GM Mikhail Tal! :) <All he cared about was chess and chessplayers. - <JFQ>> So true! :>)
I take it that you have also read my updated 'Profile' recently and are fully aware that I'll be publishing an exclusive story, "My Day with Bobby", very soon now. During the great Piatigorsky Cup (1966) just Bobby, me and a chessboard with chess set up in his hotel room (on the 17th floor [I think it was] of the Miramar Hotel) for almost six full hours (I timed it - 5 hours and 45 minutes exactly). To meet a chess legend is an honor - to actually hang out with one is simply sublime! It was a once in a lifetime experience that I shall never ever forget... <my sheepish grin is now fully exposed> :^) All the Best, - Mal
PS: I've been collecting chess memorabilia since the tender age of 13 and from the vast Internet since 1998... So, I'll upload to my premiere 'PhotoBucket' account some more pics of Bobby for your use in due time. No problem with the use of them as I have unlimited bandwidth! ;) |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Mal>!!
I'm so psyched by your INCREDIBLE NEWS that I'm jumping around the room!!! I can't wait for your story and more pictures....
I'm a <Fischer fanatic> as you can tell... He's the reason I play chess, which has been one of the greatest gifts of my life. I wouldn't go so far as to say "All I want to do, ever, is just play chess" but sometimes it feels pretty close to that.... Oh well there are worse things to get obssessed about, as my friends Colin and Rick told me. They were thrilled for me when I gave up my "other obsessions" a few years ago and started playing/studying chess seriously again after a long break... Colin said "Chess is by far the healthiest addiction you've ever had" and laughed... All the best to you <Mal> and I really can't wait for your story!!!! |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: HOW NOT TO PLAY THE WHITE PIECES AGAINST A SCHVENINGEN SYSTEM 1.e4 c5
2.Nf3 d6
3.d4 cxd4
4.Nxd4 Nf6
5.Nc3 a6
6.Be3 e6
7.a4 b6
<OK I have never tried <7.a4> so as far as I’m concerned I’m out of theory after that move—have to think for myself> click for larger view8.Be2? Bb7
<I give this move a question mark, although it has been played before—I should have taken more time to think. I believe it is unnecessarily passive—given the chance (next time) I think Bd3 is quite a bit better. Also, I like my bishops on d and e-3—it’s a thematic setup that I’m very familiar with. I can see full well that the purpose of 7…b6 is to put the LSB on b7—so what am I doing putting my LSB on e2? After 8…Bb7, then if I defend my e-pawn with 9.f3, it blocks in my LSB from the Kingside and says WHY DID YOU PUT THE DAM THING THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE. Cripes.> 9.Bf3 ?
<which was played to a draw in this game: Chekhover vs D Grechkin, 1940 However, my Shredder says bite the bullet and play 9.f3 here> 9…Nbd7
10.g3 Be7
<Now I’m all tangled up at cross purposes with myself. Idea is to get my LSB on g2 and castle, but I could have done all that without wasting tempi like I did in the game, Once this “plan” is done, my LSB would have moved 3 times to get to a square he could have gotten to in one move> 11.o-o Ne5
12.Bg2 o-o
13.b3?? Qc7
<13.b3 is a blunder.. With my clumsy “set up,” I’ve already lost tempi and the initiative—Shredder shows Black slightly better, but close to even. But not after THIS BONER! It allows 13…Qc7 and strong pressure on the c-file—My “reasoning” behind this move was to prevent 13…Nc4, which would force my DSB back to c1, disconnecting back rank communication, wasting more tempi—embarrassing clumsy retreat—but actually 13.f4 is better since although it just drives the Knight where I was afraid it would go, it gives me some counterplay and space on the Kingside. Although after say 13.f4 Nc4 14.Bc1 Qc7 15.Qd3 I’m at least not losing outright—though I think Black has a decidedly unpleasant position here requiring precise play. And now for the CAVALCADE OF QUESTION MARK MOVES… Psychologically, I was already broken, truth be told, even though I did not have an objectively or immediately lost position. But I have INCREDIBLE TROUBLE fighting my way out of messes. I keep thinking about how stupid I was to get into the mess instead of how to fight out of it.> 14.Bd2? h6
15.f4 Qc5
16.Nce2 Ned7
17.b4? Qc4
18.e5? Bxg2
19. RESIGN.
Sigh.
Any and all comments on this DEBACLE would be GREATLY APPRECIATED. |

You'll be pleasantly surprised when I unveil the inner details of this incrediable adventure... It will cover many faceted layers of stories within stories. Thus covering my entire experience at the great Piatigorsky Cup II 1966 starting from days before I left to go directly to Santa Monica. I was only 17 at the time and when Bobby started his great comeback run (from his dismal start in the 1st half to shared equal 1st with Spassky) in the 2nd half, I just had to go there. Thanks to my beloved mom and dad for allowing it to be so (Dorothy and Cecil). :) This was surely to be my chess destiny! My current USCF rating at the time was 2090. BTW - this recorded year by year by me (my records of chess progress rating wise), so somewhere between 2000 (1965) and 2090 (1966) as I'd just gained my 'Expert' rating! :) It will make you jump for joy, cry with happiness, and most of all you'll be saying to yourself, "I can't believe that Bobby said that!" ~lol~ Remember, I have the distinct advantage of hindsight. Having discussed with some of my closest chess friends (two of which I'll mention now - USCF Life Master Ronnie Gross and IM William G. Addison) that which Bobby told me. Gaining new insights years later with the savoir-faire as to what Bobby actually meant! ;) Indeed it was the chess story of my lifetime! (which I share coequally with all the WCC's that I had the honor to meet: Dr. Euwe, Smyslov, Petrosian, Tal, Spassky and of course Bobby!). I don't create posts, replies or articles really, as I prefer to think of them as 'Works of Art' that I choose to share with the Chess World! :^) So, stay tuned! <wink> My Best, - Mal
PS: Thanks also for all the nice things being said about me here on your Chessforum... I'm honored! :)) PPS: Go Nepo GO! [ Aeroflot Open (2008) ] ...his destiny awaits him the Final Round #9 now in progress... :>) |

| Feb-22-08 | | mack: 'With an odd delight, she expelled her wounded and too vigilant soul and was transformed into a single body without past or memory, but all the more eager and receptive. She tenderly caressed Eva's face, while the headless body moved vigorously on top of her. But here the headless body interrupted his movements and uttered unbelievably idiotic words: "I'm Bobby Fischer! I'm Bobby Fischer!"' Milan Kundera, 'The Book of Laughter and Forgetting' |

| Feb-22-08 | | Eyal: <Jess> Well, this seems like one of those depressing games where nothing goes you way... but when you get a lousy position you sometimes just have to give up ideas of aggressive play (unless, of course, your opponent slips somewhere along the line and gives you a realistic chance for that) and settle for patient defense. I know it's easier said than done, though (Topalov really sucks at doing this too, if it's any consolation). More specifically - as you noted, you didn't choose the best setup for your pieces in the opening. Either Bd3 or f3 to defend e4 are probably better. Btw, if you play Be2 prior to a4, then in case of b6 you have time for f4-(Bb7)-Bf3, so that the bishop doesn't block the f-pawn. I also think that you may have resigned a bit too early - 18.e5 isn't THAT bad, since you have to lose the pawn anyway. After 18...Bxg2 19.exf6 Bxf6 20.Kxg2 Bxd4 21.Nxd4 Qxd4 Black is a pawn up with a significant positional advantage (engine evaluation is close to -2 here), but there's still some fight left in the position and the loss isn't so completely obvious. |
|
| Feb-22-08 | | Eyal: Btw, a bit before the passage quoted by <mack> from Kundera's novel, the same event is described from the man's point of view [while making love with two women]: He felt like a great chess player who has conquered opponents simultaneously on two chessboards... he couldn't help laughing and shouting: 'I'm Bobby Fischer!' 'I'm Bobby Fischer!' |
