Mar-01-08  Eyal: <Jess> <Does modern Engine analysis tip the "objective scales" one way or the other in the GREAT DEBATE?> Engine analysis is no doubt used a lot at the top levels to find all sorts of novelties on, say, moves 13-25; but on the more basic question of judging the value of entire opening systems, I think the answer is - for the moment, at least - an unequivocal no. Openings are still considered as one the engines' weak points, which is why they use, as a rule, opening "books" based on human opening theory (though adapted to the specific characteristics of the engine in each case, I suppose).
Mar-01-08  Eyal: ...For example, I don't think any engine ever suggested "on its own" 2.c4 as White's best continuation after 1.d4 d5 (but on the other hand, maybe it isn't the best move objectively... who knows).

<jessicafischerqueen: Thanks <mal>!

You are relentlessly optimistic and an adornment to CG.com

I'm DYING to read your memoir of your <time with Fischer> after you write it...>

You're welcome Jess! :) When I get into the final draft stages (haven't even started working on it yet as it literally floats around in my mind at this time). I'll tease you with a 'preview' (as you stated in <achieve>'s Chessforum). I think if anyone deserves it - that would be <YOU>! :-)))

and thank you so much <Deffi>!

You are <Deffi> nitely the <bomb>...

Mar-02-08  Open Defence: btw Jess be careful of Opening Analysis using a chess engine.. they suffer from the <HORATIO NELSON> effect of seeing with only one eye while wearing an eye patch...

that is why Engines come with Opening Cooks so that HORATIO knew what's cooking...

OhioChessFan: <So you are the new <Bill Buckley>? Best wishes with that. You have to start by despising the poor.. and take it from there. >

Aye, the traditional liberal viewpoint that one must believe in the government taking care of the poor to show one cares for them. How in the world did people show they cared for the poor before the advent of the Modern Welfare State?

Mar-02-08  achieve: Hi <Jess>!

I just emailed you with a photo of Lars attached!! ... I hope it worked and you can open it... If it's abnormal size, or scrambled, let me know so I can send a good one. ( this attaching photos to EMUs thing is new for me -- I still have to install a special program for it)

Maybe it worked!!

Mar-04-08  Tactic101: Hi Jess

Did you ever have any problems/annoyances playing on yahoo? Right now, we're just debating what its faults are in the cafe.

Just curious, seeing how much you play there.

  jessicafischerqueen: Hi all!

I'm very busy teaching again but feel free to drop anything in my house.

I'll be back in action on Sunday. That's the first day I can play a game of chess.

OH well. At least I'll treasure it when I'm playing.

Domdaniel: <A voice ... accuses Svidler> I don't know much about his Gruenfeld expertise (I only play the Fianchetto Var m'self) but I can put some other scurrilous rumors to rest:

Peter Svidler is neither fat nor lazy. He speaks excellent English and is an all-round nice guy. I just watched him motor through a weekend tournament (Bunratty), scoring 5.5/6 and only conceding a draw to Baburin. I hope he comes back next year, cos he made a lot of friends.

Lazy super-GMs don't play three games on a Saturday.

They didn't have to. The poor, bless 'em, knew their place. Also, they didn't have votes.
