Mar-30-08  Red October: yeah.. Chuck Negron was on that song

jessicafischerqueen: OH very interesting track with <Chuck Negro> deffi--

I can see without being told that that live performance is from the 70s..

And i bet a million bucks that <shamballa> was from the sixties--

Now I see your point about the "bee gees" comparison as well.

I'm guessing that <3 dog night> was declining in popularity at this point?

I could GOOBLE it but I'd rather ask you for the info.

Even though, ironically, it actually takes more "typing energy" to ask you than to ask GOOOBLLE.

Don't you think that's ironic?

PS <Chuck Negro> is good looking...

  jessicafischerqueen: HAHAHAAHAHAHA

WHAT A GREAT SONG!!

"Jeremiah was a bullfrog!

He drank up alla my wine!!!"

HAHAHAHAAAHAH

Does <Dom> know about this song?

This band was great great great. it's impossible to be crabby when you listen to them!

How come they are not more well-known today <Deffi>?

Is <Britney Spears> to blame? <George Bush Jr.>?

I need to know...

Mar-30-08  Red October: <How come they are not more well-known today <Deffi>?> aah well many folk today can't remember the 60s

  jessicafischerqueen: <can't remember the 60s>

Is it cuz they took too much "reefer"?

Looks like I picked a bad decade to quit sniffing glue, then...

Mar-30-08  achieve: <Joy To the World> Great music...LOVE that swinging makes-ya-wanna-dance vibe...
Mar-30-08  achieve: ... AND sing along full volume!!
Mar-30-08  Red October: correction the main vocals on Shambala is by Danny Hutton, who is also the main singer on Black and White, but the three together produced a certain something....
Mar-30-08  Red October: another very under rated band

Mar-30-08  Red October: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NXk... something that I grew up on
Mar-30-08  achieve: DROP OFF! LOOSE PIECES! -- DOLP (I'm gonna say that in my OTB clubgames this summer, out loud, to my opponent, during a game, for distraction purposes....

-- Sir, please don't do that!

-- DOLP!! (will be the only thing I'll say)

Great clips! <spinning wheel> I "grew up" on the Mel Torme version of that song -- brilliant... And like with so many kids from my parent's vinyl collection.

Mar-30-08  Zebra: <can't remember the 60s>

It seems every German can remember the 1966 World Cup final, even if they weren't born yet. They keep bugging me about Geoff Hurst's second goal. :(

Mar-30-08  Zebra: Sorry, that smiley was meant to be a <snarl>. I don't think our hosts have implemented that one yet though.
Mar-30-08  Red October: heh! don't mention the war ;-p

Mar-31-08  notyetagm: Exercise 161 from Convekta's Pocket Chess Tactics:

White to play: 1 ?

click for larger view

First note that the Black d7-queen is <LOOSE>, attacked by the White b7-queen while <DEFENDED> -only- by the Black d8-rook. This basic piece configuration is known as the <FORK-OVERLOAD TRICK> and it means that the <MOBILITY> of the Black d8-rook is <RESTRICTED> to the d-file in order to meet the <OBLIGATION> of defending the Black d7-queen (<OBLIGATION RESTRICTS MOBILITY!>).

Next consider that the White c3-bishop and White b7-queen <CONVERGE> on the g7-square next to the Black g8-king. This <COORDINATION> of these two line pieces means that the White b7-queen exerts <BALEFUL INFLUENCE> against the g7-square. That is, White is threatening to play ♕b7-g7# (<EVERY SINGLE SQUARE -IS- THREATENED!>). To meet this threat Black is <BLOCKING> the line from b7 to g7 at d7 with his Black d7-queen.

<<<But if the Black d7-queen is restricted to the 7th rank to <BLOCK> the line b7-g7 at d7, and the Black d8-rook is restricted to the d-file to <DEFEND> the d7-square/queen, then which Black piece actually <DEFENDS> the e8-square??? NONE!>>>

So White plays 1 ♖e6-e8+!

click for larger view

That the e8-square is actually <UNDEFENDED> because both the Black d8-rook and d7-queen "defenders" must meet other more important threats is -exactly- the tactical situation that is described by the <FUNDAMENTAL THEOREM OF THREATS, PART II>: knowing how many times a square is attacked/defended -cannot- be done without taking into account all of the <THREATS> in the given position.

Black d8-rook: keep White e6-rook out of e8 or defend Black d7-queen? Defend queen.

Black d7-queen: keep White e6-rook out of e8 or block 7th rank to stop mate? Stop mate.

1 ♖e6-e8+! then.

  jessicafischerqueen: Hi <notyetagm>!!

I've just seen your puzzle, and I've set up the pieces on my board and I haven't looked at a single word you've written so far.

Ok-- White to move...

What about...

1.Re8+?

If 1...Rxe8? Then the Black Queen hangs.

If 1...Qxe8? then 2.Qg7#

OK- so after 1.Re8+ there is only move that don't lose on the spot.

If 1.Re8+ Kf7, then...

OK I"m guessing this is the really hard part if in fact 1.Re8+ is the right answer...

hang on, back to my board now.

OH! OK now 2.Qxd7!

now 2...Rxd7 <forced>

and 3.Rxc8 and Black goes in to the endgame a full piece ahead!!

Ok now I'm going to check your notes.

HAHAHAHAAH I GOT IT RIGHT <Notyetagm>!!!

I can't believe it...

AROOOOOOOO

jessicafischerqueen: Heh- OK here is another <PUZZLE OF THE DAY> taken again from the <notyetagm's favorite games> collection. Here, White is ahead a pawn and a knight in material. However, it is Black's move and he has a CRUSHING and lengthy tactical resource that is in fact a stunning forced mate if you can believe it.

Find Black's forced mate from this position: Black to move--

HINT: The Theme is the <OVERWORKED DEFENDER>

Mar-31-08  achieve: <HINT: The Theme is the <OVERWORKED DEFENDER>>

Q. Is there such a thing as an <OVERWORKED ATTACKER>??

Would LOVE to see one in action...

(never mind me; I'm an OVERewOrkED <EUWE CENTER> affiliate)

Mar-31-08  RookFile: Well, my dear wife looks like she's going to be a week late with the baby. A few more days of leisure, I guess...
Mar-31-08  Zebra: <Red October: heh! don't mention the war ;-p >

I don't have to. They talk about hardly anything else. Apart from the 1966 world cup final....

<Germans OR women, I dont' care for them. BAD EGGS...
