This is the game from the above Diagram --

jessicafischerqueen: heh thanks for your support <Doctor>.

Have you seen <Guy I forgot the name of v. Kasparov 1990>?

NOT TO BE MISSED.

Ok I'm pretty tired but I will look at the Great <Jan Track Smeets> puzzle and congratulations to our new <Dutch Champion>!!

  jessicafischerqueen: PUZZLE

Dagnabbit I can't think of anything that is forcing.

Black looks precarous there, the Queen cant move at the moment since it's tied to the defence of the Rook.

Also, If it were Blacks move not whites, and Black moved his Rook on to a8, or bcd8 for that matter, then White would have Qd8! forcing a mate in three...

However, Black won't do that.

<g3> is the mistake-, according to <Dr. Euwe>.. hmmm

OK if I was playing this on Yahoo I'd just Blockade and attack the g-pawn with

1.Rg1.

Its not easy for black to defend his g-pawn since it's moved off the Dark Square and can't immediately be protected by the Black Bishop.

If Black counters with Ra8? counterattacking the white a-pawn, thinking he can take it with tempo (a check), he is wrong because after Ra8, simply a6 and White's a-pawn is protected twice.

But I can't see a forcing ocntinuation for White at all here.

Sigh. OK All I can say is that after

1.Rg1 it will be a big problem for Black to defend his g-pawn.

black's piece mobility is severely restricted due to the precarious exposure of his King and active mating threats.

Most obvious example, for the Black Queen to move anywhere useful, the black Rook has to move first. And like I said, so long as the White Queen and rook are on the d-file, Black cant move his rook on the a-b-c or d 8 squares or it's forced mate.

But Black could keep pushing his g-pawn. However, thats one of the main reasons Id put my rook on g1- to blockade as well as attack.

Plus Black has to watch his Back rank constantly in all moves and tactics.

OK I GIVE UP

HELP HELP

I need help...

Apr-14-08  Eyal: <HELP HELP

I need help...>

Heh - well, you're basically right: 38.Rg1 is the move, Black can't defend his g pawn after that, and his position becomes hopeless. There are couple of tactical points that might be mentioned as well - in case of 38...g2 White can simply grab the pawn, since the black queen is <OVERWORKED>; and in response to 38...Ra8 White doesn't even have to bother defending his a pawn, since after 39.Rxg3! Rxa5+? 40.Kb3! (a bit counter-intuitive, since it puts the king in an apparently "exposed" square) Black can't both save the queen and defend against the mate threats (40...Qb7+ 41.Kc3).

PS I see the actual game continued 38...Ra8 39.a6 g2 40.Qd5, which is also good enough for White...

jessicafischerqueen: Oh thanks for clearing that up <Scriabin>!!

I was accidentally right, but on Yahoo I'm not sure I could navigate properly after Rg1.

However, as I posted earlier to <Megatron>, my opposition is unlikely to "navigate" that accurately either.

Apr-14-08  achieve: Dagnabbutz, <Jess>, you got the basic ideas actually completely right, as Eyal pointed out... I'm sure you were able to navigate this given sufficient time. Impressive...

Interesting to note is that Smeets had little time to "navigate" correctly and decisively passed the timecontrol, too, and he chose the somewhat safer looking ...Ra8 39<a6> continuation.

Good stuff as usual!

jessicafischerqueen: Thanks <Dr. Euwe> but I can assure you it's all accidental plus I had to look at it for a good half an hour.

I don't know what's wrong with my confidence lately--

I think that it might be because I havent got a win against a "really strong" oppnent for some time now.

<eyal> and <megatron> are having a top secret meeting on FICS!!

I'm signing in to spy-- I'll give a full report later...

Apr-14-08  achieve: Oh yes, a few moves later in that game: one more move that was "needed", to cash in...

jessicafischerqueen: I would play Rg3 here, to protect my a-pawn--

also, I can swing my Rook over after to the a-file and march my pawn and king up the board and my Rook can simultaneously control the black passer.

<Boomie>

Heh...

Apr-14-08  achieve: Brilliant!! Too easy huh?

I think you're back...

Apr-14-08  Eyal: <Jess> With all the action that's been going on the Carlsen page lately, you may have missed some of the action on the Fischer page... for example:

<Apr-09-08 Edward Labate: I have filed a complaint with the FBI for internet fraud against Ed Trice. Doing so falsely will land me in prison. It's time to end this once and for all, and this should do it ...

I think he'd be popular in prison.

Who is <Labbatt>?

I'll have to go in for a closer look--

Well spotted <Scriabin>!!

I'm never visiting the Carlsen page again--

It's simply to excrutiating to see <Kermit's> latest 5000 word post sitting there...

Apr-14-08  Eyal: I don't think you'll find much now, most of it has already been deleted by the administration... apparently it was related to a feud about book rights or something like that.

Rats. OK does this mean we won't find out who is going to jail?

Heh btw check out <Frogspawn>...

<Carcharadon Carcharias> has put all <first born Frogspawned male children> on IGNORE for some reason.

Remember when he put me on IGNORE around a year ago and I called him names for a few weeks and I think you told me to stop?

It was you, right?

I JUST PUT MYSELF ON IGNORE <Scriabin> so there may be more spelling mistakes than usual in my posts...

Apr-14-08  achieve: <Jess> Cheers on your post on <slomarko> overthere -- spot on the nuts as usual...

But he'll be back anyway I predict -- he's really tied to CG - considering the insults he managed to endure over the last 2 years there (like you mentioned) ...

I was accused by one of your "friends" for being slo's dupe account, prolly because I sometimes stick up for him, and then a day later can be critical at what he says... Too much confusion for people with paranoid tendencies obviously--- really creepy and twisted but by now no surprise anymore that these rare occurrences happen.

One or two juicy puzzles will be coming your way this week I hope.

wikkadawakdack

ack (tired as hell here)

Apr-14-08  frogbert: achieve, obviously i disagree completely. :o) i think jfq misses completely with her criticism, that she lacks necessary background knowledge to be so certain that she appears to be, and so on.

but unlike what jfq does there and here, i don't start calling jfq names, or accuses her for bad things like fascism and similar. what is so great about jfq's behaviour, achieve?

Apr-14-08  achieve: I was agreeing with JFQ on slo's back-bone over the years and the lack thereof in others-- and will NOT discuss this any further- neither here nor with ANYONE else this evening -- I'm sick and tired of the proceedings at the Carlsen page.

Last word from me on the matter.

It was a "personal" remark from ME TO JFQ

*click*

Apr-14-08  frogbert: i'll think you'll find that email is a much better medium for "personal" remarks than public forums.

just a helpful suggestion...

Apr-14-08  slomarko: i'd just like to say thank you to <jessicafischerqueen>, <achieve>, <sitzkrieg> and all others who supported me, i really appreciate it. while by nature i never avoid a good fight i've just become very bored by the same old scenario (and i think achieve's description is mostly correct).

in a way for me its like it was Kasparov, he was always a culprit for everything that was wrong in the chess world and at one point you just think whatever. it is true that my attitude was sometimes provokative and i made cynical remarks but such is the nature of many brilliant people in that respect it can be said that i'm, oh shoot me, dr.House of chess. personaly i just dislike self-rightenous and people who like to moralise constanty i guess i had one too many bad experiences with such people.

but anyway for me the whole thing is closed and i won't comment on it anymore and while i'm disinterested in that particular page i'll still be around on CG of course :)

  jessicafischerqueen: <slomarko>

Hey! I'm very glad to hear from you.

Remember, there are lots of people who like you at CG.com, and many many people who enjoy reading your posts whether they agree with them or not.

BTW, did you see that <Ed Trice> and <Edward Labate> were threatening to bring criminal procedures against each other on the <Fischer> thread?

Some people take the concept of a <chess chat site> a little too seriously, I fear.

Best Regards, and stop by here anytime,

Jess

Apr-14-08  notyetagm: White to play: 29 ?

click for larger view

Black's previous move was 28 ... ♖d5xb5??, grabbing a useless pawn on the queenside.

Black overlooks two critical tactical points pertaining to his <KING SAFETY>:

1) Black g7-king is <STALEMATED>

2) <TWO LOOSE SQUARES NEAR HIS KING>: the h8-square is attacked by the White c8-rook and the h6-square is attacked by the White e3-bishop and -both- of these squares are <DEFENDED> -only- by the Black g7-king. But since -one- piece cannot <DEFEND> -two- squares (in general), this tactical situation suggests that the Black g7-king is <OVERWORKED> and can be <DEFLECTED>.

White does not miss his chance, meeting the blunder 28 ... ♖d5xb5?? with 29 ♗e3xh6+!,

Position after 29 ♗e3xh6+! 1-0

forcing Black's immediate resignation due to the forced mate 29 ♗e3xh6+! ♔g7x♗h6 <deflection from h8> 30 ♖c8-h8+ ♔h6-g7 31 ♕c2-h7#.

(VAR) 29 ♗e3xh6+! ♔g7x♗h6 30 ♖c8-h8+ ♔h6-g7 31 ♕c2-h7#

click for larger view

This puzzle is also a great illustration of the power of the <LINE PIECES ♕♖♗> when they are on <OPEN LINES> (files, diagonals, and ranks). Not one of the White c8-rook, c2-queen, or e3-bishop is -anywhere- near the Black g7-king, yet they are able to perform a mate in 3 because they have <OPEN LINES> to the Black king.

A big win for Jorge Sammur-Hasbun (White) on his way to retaining his Dos Hermanas ICC internet blitz title in 2008.
