May-16-08  achieve: <Jess> From the welll illustrated game by <notyetagm> (Radja-Bu) I played on and thought I would be cruising for a win....

NOT SO...!

I reached the following position, which is valued as +2.00 for white, but it takes some understanding and technique to win it from here:

White to play

Please TEST this against strong (engine opposition) - this is precisely the sort of position that needs to be won through meticulous technique and sound calculating... FEEL and SHARPNESS

Have a go with this one if time allows... It's a brain trainer. Because it should be a win, but not easy at all against stubborn opposition.

GOOOOOOOOALLLLLLLL!

Yes well played.

your tactic wins a piece <and the game> by force!!

Brilliant--

BTW I'm just enjoying episode 1 of <Dexter>.

So far they are asking me to cheer for a serial killer.

Ok, I'm game... I'm guessing there is some kind of "angle" here...

May-19-08  twinlark:

Dexter is very tidy. He cleans up other people's messes as well as his own. What's not to like?

Ahh...and The World vs G Timmerman, 2007

May-19-08  achieve: The Great Almighty Doctor Max Euwe is very proud of your findings, Miss JessicaFischerQueen.

He wishes he had a secretary like you to help him during his WCC fights early in his career, but is now hopinng you'll assist him during the next GP cycle involving the Great Champions of the past.

Though he loves to study openings in depth, Dr. Euwe has always had a rather healthy attitude towards opening Theory...

But credit where credit is due.

Reveal your source and the Doctor is very much interested in sharing his.

Regards,
The Euwe Centre Administration.

May-19-08  achieve: AND... this just came in... MAX was an amateur Boxing Champion in his early days, and therefor had to rely on the work of his seconds like JFQ, to guide him savely through the opening phase at top level.

They were the backbone of his succes.

But for how long?

May-19-08  achieve: Kidding aside: Ta.

I will call the Euwe Center this week to hear their reaction to this opening line. And this particular game.

May-19-08  hms123: <JFQ> You quoted Smyslov: <Nevertheless, the most attractive thing about chess is the clash of personalities and their emotions at the chessboard, with all its mistakes. Computers don’t make mistakes, but this does not rule out the struggle. The genius of the great chess players’ combinations proves it.>

Styles make fights. This seems as true in chess as in boxing, tennis, or any other sport. It seems to me that computers will have styles that vary from one to another. Consequently, they will differ in their chosen moves. My guess is that there will be a lack of transitivity in the results (rock, paper, scissors comes to mind). Did the losing computer necessarily make a mistake? or just adopt the wrong strategy for that particular opponent?

Further, I think humans will continue to learn from computers (as with any other great human player). "Computer moves" will become part of the human repertoire. Computers will make mistakes. They are no more perfect than the humans who program them.

The emotional component is lacking in computers now, but I have friends who consider emotions to be an integral part of intelligence. They are trying to program emotions as part of a larger artificial intelligence effort. Nonetheless, I agree that something important may be lost if chess is "solved", but I doubt that will happen for a very long time.

May-19-08  hms123: <JFQ> As long as I am visiting, I will recommend the books <Darkly Dreaming Dexter> and <Dearly Devoted Dexter> (by Jeff Lindsay) as well worth reading--and better than the TV series.
May-19-08  notyetagm: Viswanathan Anand

<IS ICC USER <pendex2008> SOMETIMES ANAND?>

The account <pendex2008> on ICC is a known shared account. Rumor has it that sometimes <pendex2008> is none other than World Champion Anand!

Proof?

White to play: 29 ?

click for larger view

It took <pendex2008> all of 5(!) seconds to see that 29 ♖d1xd6+!! worked.

Position after 29 ♖d1xd6+!! 1-0

click for larger view

Now consider this next example of <pendex2008>'s play.

White to play: 17 ?

click for larger view

And here <pendex2008> took all of 6(!) seconds to see that all the tactics work after 17 ♗e2-b5!!, crushing the near 2700-strength GM Alexei Dreev(!)

Position after 17 ♗e2-b5!!

click for larger view

Notice how this game ends (PGN given below), with 29 f2-f4 and 30 ♖d3-b3!, <TRAPPING> Dreev's Black b2-bishop!

So 5 seconds for 29 ♖d1xd6+!! and 6 seconds for 17 ♗e2-b5!!. Wow.

Plus <pendex2008> told me while he was playing that he has spent time in Spain and trained with GM Vallejo Pons. And when I casually mentioned that he might then be Topalov or Anand, he said that he was not Topalov!

Also consider that Anand is famous for his fondness for <KNIGHT PLAY>, like the two beautiful <KNIGHT FORK> combinations that I have shown here.

What do you think?
