| Jun-03-08 | | notyetagm: S Volkov vs Yifan Hou, 2008 White to play: 61 ?
click for larger viewHere the Black c6-rook must meet the threat of the White c7-pawn promoting on c8 by
<DEFENDING> the c8-promotion square, so the Black c6-rook cannot leave the c-file.
That is, the <OBLIGATION> of the Black c6-rook to meet the threat of c7-c8=♕+
<RESTRICTS> the <MOBILITY> of the Black c6-rook to the c-file, i.e., the Black c6-rook
does not control -ANY- squares along the 6th rank.
Now consider the White a6-pawn. Is it threatening to do anything? <<<Yes, it is!>>>.
The White a6-pawn is threatening to advance to the a7-square, in which case the
White a7- and c7-passers would simply overwhelm the Black c6-rook. How is Black meeting
this threat, the threat of a6-a7? Is Black <PINNING> the White a6-pawn? No. Is Black
<DEFENDING> the a7-square, like he is <DEFENDING> the c8-square to prevent the advance
of the White c7-pawn? No. <<<Black is meeting the threat of the advance of the White a6-pawn
-ONLY- by <BLOCKADING> it with his own Black a6-pawn!>>>. For the Black a7-pawn to
<BLOCKADE> the White a6-pawn to prevent its advance, the Black a7-pawn must stay on the a7-square.
Hence the <OBLIGATION> of the Black a7-pawn to meet the threat of a6-a7 <RESTRICTS> the
<MOBILITY> of the Black a7-pawn to the a7-blockading square, i.e., the Black a7-pawn -CANNOT- move at all. <<<Now, if the Black c6-rook cannot leave the c-file because it must <DEFEND> the c8-promotion square, and if the
Black a7-pawn must stay on the a7-square to <BLOCKADE> the White a6-pawn, then neither the Black c6-rook nor
Black a7-pawn <DEFENDS> the b6-square, right?>>> So what can we conclude about the number of defenders of the b6-square? There are -ZERO- defenders of the b6-square.
Why? Because both the Black a7-pawn and Black c6-rook have other threats to meet (<OBLIGATION RESTRICTS MOBILITY!>). Hence Volkov (White) played 61 ♘d5-b6! and Hou Yifan resigned immediately. Position after 61 ♘f5-b6! 1-0
click for larger viewThe White b6-knight has <GAINED CONTROL OF THE PROMOTION SQUARE> (c8-square) of the
White c7-passer. Black will then be forced to give up her rook the pawn. 61 ♘d5-b6! is a lovely tactical shot the wins the game on the spot, based on the tactical point
that both the Black a7-pawn and c6-rook are <OVERWORKED> so that neither <DEFENDS> the b6-square. |

At the MTV movie awards some days ago a presenter from Canada said his hinterland people would nourish on barks and grubs. Your opinion? Some research avaibale? |

| Jun-05-08 | | hms123: <JFQ> There's an interesting (and brief) article in "The Atlantic" (July/August 2008) entitled "Is Google Making Us Stupid?" I think there are direct parallels to the use of computers in chess. The combination of the plasticity of the brain and the new technology seems be changing the way we think (and our ability to concentrate). You may be right to stay away from computers at this stage. |

| Jun-12-08 | | Boomie: <Red October: hey does anyone here watch <Northern Exposure>?> Seen 'em all. I live about 50 clicks from Roslyn, WA where it was filmed. All the characters are cute which actually is a knock on the show. Not enough problems. They come off like cartoon characters in a way. But the acting seems to overcome the smarminess. Adam Arkin's psychotic cook is my favorite character. Unfortunately he doesn't appear very often. |

| Jun-12-08 | | Boomie: <Red October: Ok 2 Canadians are missing now, Brankat and Jess> Have you heard or have you seen
that alley cat and regal queen?
Will someone please confirm that
they've bumped into queen and cat?
Jessie's probably on a year end reorientation retreat for occidental tourists. |

Dang I'm sorry I'm so late with my reply.
Your forum is closed up!!!
I hope you are not being held prisoner.
Heh <Steve McQueen>, <Mag Seven>-- well done Yes, I love the film-- amazing music by <Elmer Bernstien>-- very sexy "old school" movie stars... Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn, James Coburn.
I also saw <Seven Samurai>-- a rare five and a half hour cut screened at the Queen's University Film club. We drove all the way from Montreal to see it.
Then we smuggled beers in and got really drunk. All I remember now is that it was in black and white, and that Stewie tried to slip his hand up my thigh. Luckily I was wearing Blue Jeans as usual.
Actually I've ssen almost all of <Kurosawa>. I think he is sans pareil. <Kagemusha- the Shadow Warrior> and <Ran> are my favorites. I saw <Ran> at the <McGill University Film Club>. When we were walking out, we overheard a guy say to his girlfriend-- "Pretty cool, but not much of a story." I had to admire him for putting Shakespeare in his place like that. I read the <anti Google> article and a few others like it- thanks for letting me know. Predictably, I found the article you mentioned and the others by doing a GOOGLE search. Is that ironic?
I'm hoping it was more <metaleptic>, but I'm not holding out much hope. Always great to hear from you-- hope you open your forum again soon. |

Thanks! I had no idea there was Finnish stand up comedy. Heh. I'd send it to my Mom but she doesn't "believe" in computers. Inerestingly, my now deceased Finnish Grandma had this to say about the moon landing: "I don't believe."
I had to admire her conviction. |

Heh
You are rarely wrong.
Not communist reorientation this time-- end of semester Exam prep and all the students and teachers have gone mental. Lots of work. Plus I'm waiting for the schoolboard to email me my Contract Renewal. I demanded a raise or I walk.
Unfortunately, unless you want to walk into the East Sea, you have to go through <Ping Pong Pyang>, so it's not that good a "bargaining ploy." However, if they don't give me my raise I'm buggering off to Budapest or somewheres else where they have 3-D chessboards made out of wood, or rocks or what have you. Morphette of the I've had enough of this nonsense. |
