Jun-14-08  achieve: Geez Jess, you must have been frightfully busy!

I already planned to send you an "investigative" email, and with Branko away for two weeks already... Then things can get difficult.

Thanks for that clip. I'll check it out soon.

~lol~

My best,

jessicafischerqueen: Niels did you try mailing a 'real' letter to Branko?

Or phoning him?

Unless I'm remembering wrong, you have his "real" contact info, no?

I hope he resurfaces soon.... I will remain postive in my thoughts and prayers about him, as per the last few times he took a longish break...

Here is the "clip" challenge-- I say you can't listen to it without weeping..

Prove me wrong!!

Jun-14-08  achieve: Jess. No haven't sent him a snail maill letter... I just expected to maybe see him back every day...

As I recall Branko has no phone (good ploy, although sometimes it's a handy apparatus) so I will write him a letter. There is a chance he went for a routine periodical med check and was advised to get more rest... But now I'm speculating.

Going in for the clip now and cry my eyeballs out.

heh

Jun-14-08  Trigonometrist: Hey <jess>..

Just posted a message for you at <dom>'s forum..

Hey man check out this forum:

Domdaniel chessforum

It's called <Frogspawn> and it has some very talented chessplayers and mathemeticians.

We hang out there a lot. It also has many puns and incomprehensible bits of Irish-Dutch storytelling.

And, of course, there's sport.

HEH

Yeps I saw that one before. Someone posted it at <CG.com> a few months ago.

Was it you?

Brilliant.

Jun-15-08  Boomie: <Jessie: Morphette of the I've had enough of this nonsense.>

Good morning. ;->

Admit it. You'll never get enough nonsense.

Perhaps you should offer your services to The Great Leader. I hear he pays well and offers unique fringe benefits.

You'll be a free woman soon. Any grandiose plans for the Summer? Still coming to the Great Northwest? Perhaps I could visit the Vancouver Chess Club so we could poke fun in person. That and form a search party for Brankat.

Jun-16-08  notyetagm: Karpov vs Kasparov, 1986

White to play after 8 ... ♘e4x♘c3:

click for larger view

Kasparov (Black) has just captured the <PINNED> White c3-knight with 8 ... ♘e4x♘c3. To a beginner it would appear that Black has just won material.

But Karpov (White) has a neat and thematic resource in this position. When Black played 8 ... ♘e4x♘c3 with the support of his <UNDEFENDED> Black a5-queen, he <LINED UP> his Black knight with his <UNDEFENDED> Black a5-queen. <<<Whenever you see two pieces of the same color on a file or a diagonal, you should be thinking <PIN(!)> (Weteschnik).>>>

So Karpov (White) plays 9 ♕d1-d2!, <PINNING> the Black c3-kight to the <UNDEFENDED> Black a5-queen, not losing any material at all.

Position after 9 ♕d1-d2!

click for larger view

<WETESCHNIK ON PINS>

-- Every undefended piece (<UNDEFENDED> Black a5-queen) is a potential candidate for a pin

-- Two pieces of the same color (Black c3-knight, <UNDEFENDED> Black a5-queen) on a file or diagonal (a5-e1 diagonal) should be considered as pinned

-- Every attacked piece of yours (Black c3-knight by White b2-pawn) standing in front of another of your pieces (<UNDEFENDED> Black a5-queen) must be regarded as pinned

Jun-17-08  achieve: <Jess> An EMU found its way to your nest.

THAT'S RIGHT!!

You heard it here first (I assume..)

Jun-17-08  notyetagm: Kramnik vs Aronian, 2007

This upcoming tactical shot by Kramnik is one of my all-time favorite <PETITE COMBINAISON>.

White to play: 28 ?

click for larger view

Here Kramnik (White) played the magnificent 28 ♗b3xe6+!, a 2700-level version of the old <EXCHANGE ON THE PINNING SQUARE> idea.

Position after 28 ♗b3xe6+!

click for larger view

And then there follow 28 ... ♕g4x♗e6 29 ♕c2-b3!, <PINNING> the Black e6-queen to the Black g8-king (<PINS AGAINST THE KING>) and revealing exactly why Kramnik played 26 ♕e2-c2! in the first place.

Position after 28 ... ♕g4x♗e6 29 ♕c2-b3!

click for larger view

Kramnik's brilliant tactical point is that the <COMPLETELY PINNED> Black e6-queen can <DEFEND> neither the Black h3-knight nor the Black d6-bishop. <<<So both of Black's minor pieces are hanging (<EN PRISE>)!!!>>> This tactical nuance allows Kramnik to regain his sacrificed bishop, gaining a pawn in the process.

A -TREMENDOUS- example of tactical play by Kramnik.

Jun-18-08  WBP: Hi <Jess>!!!
Hope you're doing well. How's the school situation? I saw <Eyal's> remarks about the 13th--any word yet?

I was looking for Skookim and thought I'd find some of them here. Guess not.

Best, Rene D.

Donald Pleasance rocks!

Jun-18-08  Ragh: <JFQuennedy> Congrats on being the first human being for hitting 400 pages in a chessforum!
Jun-18-08  Eyal: Actually, I believe <Emperoratahualpa>'s forum already got there about two years ago, but it's been closed for quite a while... Still, an achievement of epic proportions without doubt!
