 | | jessicafischerqueen: Notation error?
?????
HAHAHAHAAHAH
<Nunn>?
Well I don't know.
Is he stout? Resolute? Did he go to a good school?
I have to go to school myself right now.
heh

| Apr-29-09 | | hms123: <jess> You rock! Do look at the puzzle from Nunn's book that's at <niels's> place. |
|
| Apr-29-09 | | hms123: <jess> why ask about a notation error? such a thing could never happen. |
|
Apr-29-09
 | | jessicafischerqueen: <H> thanks for all the encouragement! Ok yes I certainly will try the <Nunn> puzzle at <Elephant House> but not till after work. It will be a good litmus to see if I've actually improved in the last three years. Around three years ago I got <Chessmaster> and it has a whole pile of <Nunn puzzles>- and I failed to solve A SINGLE ONE OF THEM. I could only do the "Intermediate Puzzles" on <Chessmaster>. So <Nunn> is a butt noir for me- I'M ASCARED! |
|

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Also- and again, I know <Wood> disapproves- But beating a <loka soft Java Chess engine on 5 ply> was an even bigger BUTT NOIR for me since I couldn't ever do it. But now I can. And I did give in to temptation last night and whupped Little Chess Partner again- I played Black in a symmetrical English and he succumbed to a pawn sac for a vicious assault on his Kingside. I won't be doing this any time soon again because as <Wood> pointed out I"ve got a lot better things to do with my Chess time than "Play a program that punishes the smallest tactical error but doesn't even know how the pieces move in the endgame", as <Wood> put it. However, it <is> "personal" with me due to my Chess computer fear. I just assume the Computer "knows better" even when it can only see two and a half moves ahead. Ok what does that tell you? It tells you how important tactical safety is in Chess. If a program at 5 play can beat a casual chessplayer every single time- It means that "long calculations" are not necessary to thump people at this level. And what's up with this <on the very fastest computers LCP will play at a 2000 level>? I don't think so.
I bet not in fact.
Ok when I'm home on vacation I'm buying the <Jesus Christ's Palatial Villa> Endgame Book, and the <Stephen Frears Open Moose Book> that <Deffi> recommended for me. Mrs. Chess Books
Oh and PS to <Big Crawdaddy> on his recent post in <Howard's> house. I am a sub-2000 rated player, and Since Winter vacation I've been spending maybe 90% of my chess study time playing out various Endgames agaisnt my Shredder, and it appears that my ability to play in every stage of the game is now improving as a result? I'm pretty sure about this-
I think it's because you learn "how the pieces move" in the endgame. Sounds easy. But it isn't. Not for me.
I'm looking forward to my <Sillman Complete Endgames> coming on Tuesday, because I want to learn how to do R + R against K checkmates. (not kidding- I can do the basic mates, but can I do them in the shortest number of moves? I bet not..) |

| Apr-29-09 | | achieve: <Jess> Good job! You saw the ...Qxf2 ploy. This is from Kasparov-Portisch... Poor Lajos.
Better get to work, in order to get off work ASAP!
PUZZLE ALERT!

Funny thing is I'm about to go to bed, then tomorrow we have a National Holiday... A Free day!!!

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Happy <Queen Wilhelmina Day> Elephant!! Ok how do I get a copy of the <MittleGesamntkunstwerk>, and is it available in English? |
|
| Apr-29-09 | | achieve: <Mittelgesamntkunstwerk> hahahahhaaaaaa!
Well, no, it was translated from German to Dutch, though I can read German fluently, but the English translations are very rare, and Howard has spotted copies at 400 USD a piece. But worth it!!
<MittleGesamntkunstwerk> heh ... |
|
| Apr-29-09 | | achieve: Found it!!
Copies en Anglais are available at:
http://www.legscrossed.org |
|
| Apr-29-09 | | hms123: <niels> I found a less expensive copy of Treppner online and ordered it. I just hope my chess German is good enough. I think it will be. I found an old "cheat sheet" in my copy of Schwarz's http://www.amazon.com/Franz%C3%B6si... |
|
| Apr-29-09 | | achieve: Congrats <Howard>! I have to add though that my copy was redacted/edited by Hans Böhm, who was is the redaction team of just about ANY Chessbook that was published in the Dutch language during the 80s and 90s, and he also wrote the preface and explanatory introduction I reckon. He was very good at that. But having the original German text would be even more classy! Ideal would be to set an hour or so aside each time and try and solve about 5-7 exercises in that time. A few times a week; would take well over a month to get through all 140. I started out more improv style, but the second half of the exercises I am trying to write down the variations and keeping time. That way the benefit is of course the greatest, with no peeking... Actually quite tough to keep up when you are a bit tired, to be honest. |
|
| Apr-29-09 | | achieve: PS <h> - <Jess> is quite well versed in German as well; I found this from her at woodies: <mittelsprachenDeutschelagerpanzerkampwagen> So for any questions "our" door is always open for you! heh - I can't stop laughing at those <Mittlekraftwagenmitkanonenfutter> words... I can't really help it |
|
| Apr-29-09 | | achieve: <Jess> Good morning I had a first real shot at <howard>'s 'Nunn puzzle' he posted at my place, so don't scroll too far down as to not see my "solution," if you are gonna have a crack at it. |

| Apr-30-09 | | achieve: On this beautiful <Queen Emma Day> one more little tactical flurry can't hurt I spose: <ALL POWER TO THE BISHOPS>!! click for larger viewWhite to play and win (no forced Mate, oddly enough)
One to remember, this theme.
--------
And a positional little gem for the road (I'll be out pretty much all day btw) click for larger viewWhite to play
A) The chances for Black to secure square <c4>, will render him equality B) With precise play, White keeps control over the <c-file>, and from there builds on to an exquisite position (from: Petrosian vs Unzicker, 1960 - and the kibitzing with this game, three pages, is exquise as well.) |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Niels> that first puzzle there is a whopper- Ok obviously White needs to sac the Queen. Mainly because Black is about to Checkmate White. So forced checks are necessary, and the finish is breathtaking. I wouldn't have found it in a game- no way. Although, as always in chess, there is a real logic to the <only winning variation>- once you "see it" it seems so simple. But it isn't.
Qxg7+ Kxg7,
But just try to figure out the right square to post the Bishop on the next move. There is only <one square> for the Bishop on this move that wins for White. Also, as you pointed out, after the forcing sequence White still has to win the "won game" and it's not that easy - not for me. I converted only on the third try against my <Shredder>. heh |

| Apr-30-09 | | hms123: <niels> <jess> The first position is #18 in Nunn's book. It is from H Westerinen vs G Sigurjonsson, 1977. I just went over it yesterday. Nunn uses the method of elimination to determine the right square for the Bishop (after establing why it hasa to remain on the correct diagonal). |
|
| Apr-30-09 | | achieve: <Jess> Hats off to your cander and honesty to post you won the "won game" at your 3rd attempt. And well solved.
I am still knackkered and shocked following a failed attempted assault on the Royal Family, in Apeldoorn. A report is in <howard>'s forum. Dunno when I'll be back concentrating and enjoying Chess. Prolly takes a while as I was still raging mad a minute ago. Ok back later |

I think it's because you learn "how the pieces move" in the endgame.> That might be a benefit, but also think about how you evaluate middlegame operations. Highest on the evaluation scale would be an unstoppable mating attack, followed by win of overwhelming material. Somewhere in that calculus has to be "do I get a better/even/worse ending from simplification?" So ending evaluation often has to inform middlegame judgement. Here are two books I pulled off my shelf that concern just that transition: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/18...

| Apr-30-09 | | achieve: <Jess> Thanks for your words at <howard>'s. I will not let this get me down for too long, and am in fighting spirit. So are many Dutch. I'm babbling - the Treppner book saw the light of day for the first time in 1988. "When I was twenty-one it
was a very good year
It was a very good year for city girls
who lived up the stair
With all that perfumed hair
and it came undone
When I was twenty-one"
Check out this Live version by <Frank> - it is waaaay up there, beyond comparison; phrasing at its absolute finest. Mr. Sinatra: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5... |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: ===A quick-start guide to FICS=== Here are a few commands that will allow you to get a quick startusing FICS. --- SEEK/MATCH The seek and match commands are two ways start a game withanother player. The "match" command challenges one other player to a game;the "seek" command advertises a game to all available players. The syntax is "seek time increment" or "match user time increment".In both cases, _time_ is the starting time (in minutes) on theclock of each player, and _increment_ is the amount of time(in seconds) added after each move. Examples: seek 5 12match cyclist 5 0 --- TELL The "tell" command is the basic method of communicating withfellow players. There are two types of tells. (i) Private tell. Your message goes to just one user.Syntax is "tell user message". Example: tell tvail FICS is great! (ii) Channel tell. Your message goes to all people who are inthat channel, for example the help channel.Syntax is "tell channel_number message". Example: tell 1 How do I find an opponent? --- HOW TO GET HELP The main method of getting help is to ask your question inchannel 1. An example of that is mentioned under the "TELL"section above. If you need more extensive help, it is suggestedthat you ask a User Service Representative, or "SR". To do that, type "in 5" to see which SR's are logged in. Then use a tell(see above) to ask one of them your questions. For example, suppose "in 5" listed AaronS(SR) [note the SR forService Representative]. Then you can type"tell AaronS How do I find some information about different players?" |
