| Jul-14-09 | | just a kid: I've been behind on my games in my 60 moves in 60 minutes tournament I mentioned earlier. Here is the round 3 games where I had 2/2 points so far.I played another person with 2 points. White:NN Rating 1600
Black:just a kid Rating:1515
1.e4 e5<my favorite reply to 1.e4> 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3<The "boring 4 knights game.I play this on occasion when I am White because it suits my style.>3...Nf6 4.Bb5<White also has the choice of 4.d4,the scotch 4 knights.>4...Bb4 5.O-O O-O 6.d3 d6 7.Bg5 Bxc3<forced> 8.bxc3 Qe7<the fritz-metger variation,Black wants to reposition his knight to e6 via d8.>9.Re1 Nd8 10.d4 Ne6 11.Bc1<White wants to keep the Bishop so he undevelops it.This is ok though since Black wasted 2 moves to get the knight to e6.>11...c5 <still main line>12.d5<I've been seeing this move a lot lately.White kicks the knight on e6 back. The pawn structure resembles a King's Indian defense, but this is more favorable situation since Black has exchanged off his dark-squared Bishop.>12...Nc7<attacking the Bishop and forcing is back.>13.Bd3 h6!?<we are now following this game Cortlever vs Keres, 1939 > 14.Rb1< a novelty.Black can lock up the queenside with...>14...Rb8 15.c4 Bd7 16.Bd2 b6 17.h3 Nh7<trying to get the knight to a better spot like f4.> 18.Qc1 a5<the queenside is locked up.I think Black is ok in this position but my computer chess board(the closest thing I have to a computer chess program) says I am down -1.7.Does any other programs give the same feedback?>19.Rb2<trying to double the rooks on the b-file to get the pawn.>19...Na6 <trying to aim for b4.> 20.a3 Ba4<Black is trying to minimize White's queenside play. This move allows the queen to defend the queenside,if needed, along the 7th rank. This also allows white to put his rooks to defend on the b-pawn since 20...Rb7? would lose to 21.Bxa5!>21.Bc3 Rb7 22.Qd2<looking for 23.Bxa5! bxa5 24.Qxa5 winning the piece back and ultimately winning a pawn.>22...Qc7 23.Nh4<looking for f5.>23...Rfb8 24.Qe3 Nf8?! <24...b5! liquidating the queenside is called for.>25.Rbb1 Bd7?!<White can still play 25...b5!>26.Qg3 Qd8<Black needs to go to the kingside to defend.White has the initiative.>27.f4! <a good move! White opens the kingside up!>27...f6 28.fxe5 fxe5 29.Rf1<Now White has the f-file.Black needs to play very carefully!>29...Nh7<allowing Black to try and contest the f-file> 30.Bd2 g5!!<one hardly expects this move!Black is opening up the kingside and begging the knight to go to f5!> 31.Nf5 Bxf5<forced.This allows Black's rook on b7 to defend along the 7th rank.>32.exf5 Qf6!<an exception to chess knowledge!Usually Knights belong in fornt of passed pawns. Not queens! however after 32...Nf6 33.h4! allows White to break through the kingside>33.Qf2<33.h4!? is more aggresive, but Black should be able to make a draw.>33...Nc7 <the beginning of a journey for the knight.>34.Rfe1<White is trying to prevent the passed e-pawn from causing havoc.>34...Ne8 35.g3 Ng7 <we agreed to a draw since White cannot make any progress on Black's position.>
I am at 2.5/3 at this point, tied for first place. |

| Jul-14-09 | | Boomie: <crawfb5: The University of Connecticut also has the Husky as a mascot> I remember the great game U Conn played against Penn State in the NCAA semis a few years ago. In Seattle, we get to watch the great Sue Bird play. I would be remiss to neglect to mention that the UW Huskies won the NCAA women's softball title this year. They went through the competition like crap through a goose. |

Good game. I am amazed that you and your opponent played so many good opening moves. Look at the Opening Explorer for white's 12th move.
Opening Explorer Notice that 12. d5 hasn't been played much.
I was looking for a way for black to play f5 and g5 as in a KID. However knights have to be moved to better squares first. 32. exf5 surprised me and may be bad. I would have play Rxf5 without much thought. White is set up to control the f-file. The woeful white squared bishop can go to h5 to hit f7. It may not be winning but will make black's life miserable. Good game and thanks for posting it. |

| Jul-14-09 | | just a kid: <Boomie>My opponent mentioned afterwards that he did not expect 32...Qf6! and only looked at 32...Nf6 33.h4!?.I'll look at 32.Rxf5 and tell you what I would have played. |

| Jul-14-09 | | crawfb5: <Boomie> Well done on the softball. The UConn women went <undefeated> this past season in basketball, with no game closer than 10 points or so. Now <that's> a greased goose... One year we went to watch them in a couple of the tournament games and wound up sitting two seats behind a former player. We are actually quite spoiled here. Connecticut Public Television broadcasts <every> regular season game that isn't picked up by one of the networks. Most <men's> programs don't have <that> level of TV coverage. |

| Jul-15-09 | | sentriclecub: Hi Jess,
How is the world's biggest RJF fan doing? Everytime I read your name I am so envious of your being in Korea! I wanted to sincerely apologize for my rude behavior. I was trying to plan my escape from CG for quite a while; and, then comes you and you are in Korea and you are a RJF fan too! Nice entrapment--you kept me around an extra month; and, it took every ounce of restraint to not bug you with a million questions about Korea. I'll be on my best behavior from now on, and I hope you'll forgive my past exuberance and tolerate my future exuberance! Warm regards,
 |

The hewlett packard Vista I bought in January motherboard fryed, so guess what after GeekSquad gave me the run around for 6 weeks they finally gave me a new computer. I get the new replacement one, a newer model that cost me an extra 120 bucks and no sooner did I plug it in the tower went on and off about every 4 or 5 seconds non stop, no matter what i tryed to rectify the problem. I've just been ranting about this humiliating and ridiculous first round pairing of Class A club players against Grandmasters. Is this some kind of organized mass masochism on the part of the Canadian Chess Confederation? What happened to "national chess dignity"?
Would "a bunch of us" play an official FISA soccer game against the Brazilian national team "just because we got the chance"? NO. For obvious reasons.
I find the conditions of this "Canadian Open" in the first round to be EXACTLY ANALOGOUS. I am embarrassed for these people- and angry.
"Oh- I played Mickey Adams!!"
"Oh- I played Irina Krush"
AND LOST IN FIVE MOVES.
????????????????????????? |
|
| Jul-17-09 | | hms123: <jess> I saw your post on the Krush game. In general, I agree with you, but there's one issue that needs to be resolved: there are clearly juniors whose ratings are rising rapidly. Thus, as soon as a floor is set for the open section you do those juniors a disservice. That said, the first round games are silly and a waste of time. Although it just occurred to me that if I am willing to spend hundreds of dollars entering the open for the privilege of playing Krush, then I am also subsidizing the prize pool. That might be a reasonable trade-off all-around. If you have a chance you should check out the current video by Dennis M (http://www.chessvideos.tv/) on good knight vs. bad bishop. It is quite good--and it reminded me of an ending that you asked about a few months back. |

 | | chancho: Hi Jess. Being Canadian, can you please tell me if the health care system in Canada is very efficient for it's citizens, and perhaps better than it's counterpart in the US? Your input would be most appreciated. |
